Les Horvath
Began attending OSU in 1939, walked on to the football team the next year.
Wore #53 in 1940
Wore #48 in 1941
Wore #22 in 1942 (National Championship)
Though Horvath had been a backup at Ohio State, the Cleveland Rams drafted him in the 6th round in 1943. Horvath chose to go to Ohio State's dental school instead. In 1944, coach Carroll Widdoes took advantage of a WWII-era rule that allowed graduate students to play. Horvath wore #22 and won the Heisman Trophy. After dental school, he served in the U.S. Navy briefly (as a dentist) and then went to play for the rams for a few years, who were then in LA. He finished his career for the original Cleveland Browns, and won a championship with them.
To recap: He was a 5'10" 173 lb walk-on who played his last season (winning the Heisman Trophy) AFTER being drafted by an NFL team. He was a member of Ohio State's first National Champion and won Ohio State's first Heisman Trophy.
EDIT: Born in South Bend, Indiana and played for Ohio State instead of the Irish

Ohio State vs Fort Knox in 1942, the Buckeyes won 59-0. Paul Brown was the head coach. Attendance was listed as 22,555 and you could have bought a program for 25¢.
