I bet he's dating Day's daughter.I can't figure out how Werner keeps getting on the field. He's constantly a step behind or completely out of position. He was a huge liability last year.
What's clear to me is that the defensive staff last season was stealing money. A quantum fucking leap over what I saw in 2018 against what's probably going to be a Top 20 offense. Even the back ups, while clearly a step down, looked more fundamentally sound than the starters did pretty much all last season. Very, very encouraged by what I saw.
What was great was that, even on some of the more successful throws FAU completed, there were at least two or three defenders around to make the tackle. It's funny, my wife was watching the game with me and my son. I was constantly pointing out to both of them to look how there was an umbrella of defenders in front of the ball carrier on almost every play.
It was like Tom Hanks character in Cast Away being back in the hotel room and turning the light on and off. Things I once took for granted are highly appreciated again.
A gap sound defense with OSU's athleticism is going to be at least a top 25 type unit. At least. Probably higher because there are some dreadful offenses on the schedule.
FAU began the game with 8 straight punts and one first down. That’s 7 3-and-outs, and one 6 play drive that netted 2 total yards due to a Jashon Cornell sack/forced fumble. FAU managed a FG on their last possession, their best series of the first half, which went 6 plays for 15 yards, off a fumble recovery that was already in FG range.
The defense played their base cover 3 zone with a lot of backups in the entire second half since the coaches knew FAU couldn’t beat them. There is nothing on film for Cincinnati other than 12 minutes of proof our 1s are better than their 1s.
