NORTH CAROLINA/UCF AND WEST VIRGINIA/NC STATE GAMES CANCELLED DUE TO HURRICANE FLORENCE

This weekend's college football slate got a little lighter.

With hurricane Florence currently heading towards the coast of North Carolina and expected to be the most catastrophic storm to hit the region in decades, Saturday's West Virginia-NC State and UCF-North Carolina have been cancelled.

Wake Forest also moved its Thursday night game against Boston College up to 5:30 p.m. because of the impending hurricane.

Virginia-Ohio football game moved to Nashville due to Hurricane Florence

Virginia’s home football game against Ohio, which was scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday at Scott Stadium, has been moved to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, due to the potential threat from Hurricane Florence.

The game, which was originally slated to kick off at 3 p.m. in Charlottesville, will now be played at 4:30 p.m. EST (3:30 p.m. local time in Nashville).

Tickets for Saturday’s game will be refunded if they were purchased through the University of Virginia ticket office. Admission to the game in Nashville will be free.

Why wouldn't they just agree to move these games to the visitor's school (i.e. WVU, UCF, & OU) and split the gate? Then the visiting school could agree to play a future game at the home team's place (i.e. UNC, NCSU, & UVA) for a makeup.

Iowa State announces Dec. 1 game against FCS Incarnate Word

Iowa State will indeed have a 12-game regular season — probably.

Wednesday afternoon, Iowa State announced that it will play FCS Incarnate Word on Saturday, Dec. 1. That matchup will replace the season opener against South Dakota State, which was canceled because of inclement weather.

Hurricane Florence leads South Carolina to cancel Marshall game

Add another game from the college football schedule being scratched from this week’s lineup thanks to the incoming Hurricane Florence. South Carolina has announced the cancellation of their home game this weekend against Marshall.
.
.
.
South Carolina and Marshall do not have overlapping bye weeks this season so any makeup game between the two would have to be tacked on at the end of the season during championship weekend. Of course, there is a chance at least one of the schools could be playing in their conference championship game that weekend, so scheduling that weekend is not an ideal alternative. South Carolina has also already scheduled an FCS school for the regular season (Chattanooga on Nov. 17), so scheduling a second FCS opponent may not be in the cards either.

Marshall has a bye week on October 27. Other schools with vacancies on the schedule that could need a 12th game include Nebraska, UCF, and East Carolina.

Iowa State is off the books too after scheduling a home game with Incarnate Word for December 1 as a makeup game.

Appalachian State announces Southern Miss game won’t be played

Mother Nature and her wrath have picked off yet another Week 3 FBS game.

Not surprisingly, Appalachian State announced that this weekend’s game against Southern Miss will not be played because of the threat of Hurricane Florence. The Sun Belt Conference school wrote in its release that “[o]fficials from both schools are exploring options to reschedule the game.”

Including this one, there have now been nine FBS games impacted in some form or fashion by Hurricane Florence. Below are the other eight.

  • West Virginia-North Carolina State — canceled.
  • UCF-North Carolina — canceled.
  • East Carolina-Virginia Tech — canceled.
  • Ohio-Virginia — moved from Charlottesville to Nashville.
  • Boston College-Wake Forest — moved up from 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday to 5:30 the same day.
  • Old Dominion-Charlotte — moved up from Saturday to Thursday.
  • Campbell-Coastal Carolina — moved up from Saturday to Wednesday.
  • Norfolk State-Liberty — moved from Saturday to Dec. 1.
It’s still possible that a couple of other games — Georgia Southern at Clemson, 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday; Marshall at South Carolina, 7 p.m. ET Saturday — could be impacted by the Category 4 storm.

I should have Googled before I asked.
Now, I know what you’re wondering. We all are.

“I always get asked, ‘How did you get Miami to come to Toledo?’” star Rockets wideout Cody Thompson said.

Great question.

As best we figured, it was the product of O’Brien’s relationship with Kirby Hocutt, the Miami AD at the time the home-and-home series was announced in 2010. The two men previously worked together at Kansas State and as colleagues in the MAC. Maybe Hocutt — who was the Ohio AD from 2005-08 — was tossing his old friend and league a bone.

Problem is, Hocutt has since moved on to Texas Tech. Ask him what he was thinking, and he said he doesn’t know. The memory issues bug appears to be going around.

“I think very highly of Mike O’Brien and [current Miami AD] Blake James,” Hocutt wrote in an email. “Enjoy the matchup, but I honestly don’t feel like I am able to recall the facts of the situation enough to help you.”

Why is Miami playing AT Toledo?

Same reason they played at Appalachian St in 2016 and were scheduled to go to Arkansas St last season before that was cancelled due to Irma: They don't make any money on those paycheck home games because their fans don't show up unless (1) the game is an event and (2) Miami is good.
