I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Nebraska AD hired Riley as a placeholder. They just wanted to get rid of Pelini's attitude ASAP and he fit the bill for "culture change".
As soon as Scott Frost arrived on the CFB scene, Riley's end was cemented unless he was fielding 10win teams... which we all know was never going to happen.
That said... maybe his severance package tells a different story.
