2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

I'm not ready to find the pitch forks for Zach Smith quite like Diddy is. He is a key reason why Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes are currently committed. It seems like Joker Phillips heading to Cincinnati is a sign that Smith isn't being shipped off, but maybe that's a wrong guess. His receivers need a year or two with a new offensive coordinator, if the offensive coordinator will allow it, then I will pass judgement. I don't think the receivers have been used correctly. I do agree with @lvbuckeye that something needs to happen after their routes, and they need to work back to the ball or go deep. Receivers waiting to catch the ball rather than going to get the ball is a bad recipe.

Who would you say is the best WR recruited by and coached by him.

To be clear, Smith was hired by OSU before Michael Thomas enrolled, and was his position coach for his entire career here. After that probably Noah Brown or KJ Hill.. maybe Jalin Marshall? But it was starting in 2014 that he really took off as a star recruiter, and with classes of Mack/Victor and Trevon/Grimes still coming of age, I expect the best is yet to come.

I agree about holding judgement.. I had not known any of his work other than the pros and he did a phenomenal job on Foles those first 2 years. I'm glad to hear some others know more about his experience and are pleased with the possible hire.
I think it is similar to Herman.
Seemingly unimpressive.
But when you dig deeper what he did at ISU was well above the norm.

Two things... 1) He's not afraid to run the ball. 2) When can he start!!!?

"Day joined Philadelphia following two seasons (2013-14) as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Boston College. In 2014, the Eagles ranked second in the ACC and 21st in the country in rushing yards per game (254.4), as both QB Tyler Murphy (11) and RB Jon Hilliman (13) registered double digit rushing touchdowns.

During the 2013 season, RB Andre Williams became just the 16th player in FBS history to rush for 2,000-or-more yards after registering 2,177 yards on 355 attempts, which led to unanimous All-America honors. A Heisman Trophy finalist, Williams became the ACC’s first Doak Walker Award winner, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate running back. Boston College had a five-win improvement in his first season as offensive coordinator."

He's the one coaching the kids that run to the end of their route, then stand there. He's the one coaching the kids that had the worst case of dropsies that I can remember.

How many catches did they have in those 21 passes?

When you 0-for, EVERYONE is on the chopping block.

We had a dip in WR talent this year.....

Noah Brown former RB
Curtis Samuel former RB
Dontre Wilson former RB

And then guys like McClaurin, Hill, and Victor.....

I'm not sure what anyone could do with that group honestly. It was a straight throwback to Meyer's UF 8-4 teams. Bunch of hybrids on the outside. It isn't a pretty look, but don't pin that on Smith. The receivers looked good when we actually had true receivers on outside (Michael Thomas, Devin Smith, Evan Spencer).

Time to regroup this off-season around offensive strategy, and come back with something that re-emphasizes the power run, with downfield shots to true WR's. We have the talent in the pipeline and coming in, time to put it too work. I love Curtis, but being our downfield threat is not a good thing (not a true WR).

He has been here 5 years.
So it wasn't his first year where he inherited what was on the roster.
Wouldn't he share some responsibility for having a roster devoid of true WR's?
And wouldn't this have been an ideal opportunity for Victor/Mack to contribute.
Or is our passing scheme so complex that we are the only team in the country where a true frosh WR can't contribute.
It was the worst wr corp in my lifetime, bar none.

And Michael Thomas left a year early, leaving the cupboard bare with experience. This year was a pretty horrific set of receivers. But assuming Day comes in and then we land either Wilson or Kelly, they will not operate a system where we take 3 shots a game downfield to a hybrid who has no ball-skills and limited route running ability.

If you want to lay the depth chart and playing time of the guys he had to work with, I guess you could lay that at Zach's feet, but I'm not even sure he has that much say.

The system needs a overhaul.....thankfully, that overhaul is in the works.

What bothered me was Urban not knowing those numbers when asked after the game about the ratio.

If you don't know your numbers, how can you make any adjustments?
This isn't supposed to be Urbans game day responsibility. He most likely knew we were passing too much but didn't know the exact numbers. Calling the plays is a booth responsibility because they can see what the defense is doing. It's hard to know what's going on from the sideline. Adjustments are made from the box as well. We know he's talking to the booth. I wish I knew what they were saying. Coaches never seem to know the numbers so it must be more generic feel of the game planning.
Bottom line, a monkey pulling plays out of a hat would have had more success.
