Precisely. Manti had some epic shenanigans to increase the hype, but his production was really strong and he anchored a defense that earned a championship berth.Peter King continues the stream of scouts/columnists that can't seem to name ONE thing that GerbiLLL does well on the field, instead relying on the nebulous "he's a star" refrain that is so familiar with Peppers...
So, four months of scout/media trying to evaluate what GerbiLLL does that will translate to the NFL and make him worthy of being a first round selection has netted bupkis. The only tangible thing on his resume is a failed piss test at the combine. Sounds like a recipe for success.
I still argue there's never been a more fraudulent media creation than this dope. I know people like to throw out Te'O's name, but he at least was a productive college player. GerbiLLL was a good returner, gadget/decoy on offense, and extremely flawed defender.
Peppers is the epitome of journalism preconceptions. To handle the staggering volume of things to analyze and the early deadlines, journalists must consume plenty of watch lists and write a lot of articles before the event plays out. The problem is thar so many of them fall in love with the narrative and fail to notice when the complete opposite happens.
It's the same laziness that keeps JT Barrett a Heisman contender (despite loads of contrary evidence in 15 & 16 ) along with Peppers. Meanwhile the truly productive and electric Swiss army knife named Samuel is mostly unknown until his final few games at Ohio State and the next Ed Reed (Hooker) gets as much fanfare as Tyquan Lewis (who is a very good player but will be drafted behind 2-4 other DL on his team).
