2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Correct, there is no way in hell a team could win with a backup QB and heaven forbid the backup go down and you end up playing a 3rd team guy. Good luck with that.

Truth. Plus Meyer seems impressed with Burrow and I don't think there was a more college-ready QB in the '16 class than Haskins. Personally, I think Burrow is going to thrive in our offense and I can't wait to see him in the spring game.

Article from the local paper...

Ohio State football | Replacing Ezekiel Elliott may take team effort

Tony Alford wasted little time pining for what he no longer has.

The Ohio State running backs coach knew what he was losing when Ezekiel Elliott decided to enter the NFL draft. It wasn’t just the 1,821 yards and 23 touchdowns Elliott had last year. It was also the ferocious blocking and maximum effort on every play.

But coaches must live in the present.

“I got past, ‘Where’s Zeke?’ as soon as we started in January,” Alford said. “Listen, they’re on scholarship, too. It’s their turn to play, and they better step up and play.”

They are fifth-year senior Bri’onte Dunn, redshirt freshman Mike Weber, junior Curtis Samuel and early-enrollee freshman Antonio Williams. Somehow, someway, they must provide at least a good chunk of the production Elliott provided the last two years.

“I guess the question being asked is if we’re going to do it by committee, and I don’t have that answer right now,” Alford said. “If we need to, absolutely. We’re going to do whatever it takes to win football games.”

Samuel isn’t practicing this spring as he recovers from foot surgery. But he is a dynamic player who has also been used as a receiver and is likely to be used as an offensive wild card.

So for now, Dunn and Weber are competing. Both endured bumpy starts as Buckeyes after entering as blue-chip prospects. Dunn looked like he might never get in the good graces of coaches until he belatedly embraced a role on special teams and matured.

“It’s been a long journey,” Dunn said. “Some people have quick journeys. Some people have long journeys. I’m just trying to develop myself into being the best player I can be."

The O-Zone takes another shot at the "offensive depth chart":

Piecing Together Ohio State's Depth Chart on Offense

Having made it through just over half of spring camp, now seems to be a good time to try and put a depth chart together for the Buckeyes.

There are plenty of caveats, however, as there are still two weeks remaining in spring camp and there are injuries to factor in as well.

Regardless, we've got to try.

16-04-02-FB-0013-DH.jpg
Quarterback

J.T. Barrett, rJr
Joe Burrow, rFr
Stephen Collier, rSoph

This has been the depth chart since spring opened. In an effort to get a backup quarterback ready, Burrow has received the bulk of the No. 2 reps. This has been the normal practice under Urban Meyer at Ohio State, as there generally aren't reps for the No. 3 quarterback because having a capable backup ready is so important.

Running Back
Bri'onte Dunn, rSr OR
Mike Weber, rFr
Antonio Williams, Fr

Dunn began the spring as the No. 1 running back and Urban Meyer has said he wants him to take the first snap this season. That may or may not happen, and Mike Weber certainly isn't making things easy for Meyer or Tony Alford. Right now Dunn and Weber are splitting reps with the ones, and that will probably continue into the fall. Antonio Williams has looked quite good this spring as well, and he may be the most explosive of the three backs.

H-Back
Dontre Wilson, Sr
Parris Campbell, rSo
K.J. Hill, rFr

Parris Campbell was playing in the slot on Saturday while Dontre Wilson sat to recover from his latest bout of foot issues. K.J. Hill also had some time in the slot, but both Hill and Campbell will play multiple receiver spots this fall. The two true H-backs on this roster are Curtis Samuel and Wilson, and neither are entirely healthy at the moment. Together, however, they will be the H-back depth chart this fall.

AFTER MASS EXODUS AND WITH PLENTY OF PLAYERS WORKING WAY BACK FROM INJURY, OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE REMAINS A WORK IN PROGRESS THIS SPRING

69430_h.jpg,qitok=DO9S-NZU.pagespeed.ce.pQfNnQo3Mz.jpg

Practicing behind an offensive line with three new starters, throwing to a new crop of wide receivers and a new tight end and handing the ball off to a different running back, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has already seen a lot of change this spring.

This isn’t a surprise, of course, as the Buckeyes are working to replace eight offensive starters — and 16 total — after the mass exodus following the 2015 season which saw nine underclassmen declare for the NFL Draft. Barrett, who is set to enter his redshirt junior season behind center, is one of the few ones who stuck around for 2016.

And because of all the transition — and as several of Barrett’s top offensive weapons are limited due to injury — Ohio State’s offense has been somewhat of a work in progress through the first eight practices of the spring.

“I don’t think we ever want to be content with what we do because you’re always trying to progress and get better. I think that’s we’re at right now, we’re at a spot where we can grow,” Barrett said Saturday. “We’re not complacent at all, I don’t think that’s our mindset. We’ve got young guys getting reps and making sure that they’re going to be able to help us out.”

11W's projected offensive depth chart:

PROJECTING OHIO STATE'S DEPTH CHART BASED ON WHAT WE'VE SEEN FROM SPRING PRACTICE

69436_h.jpg,qitok=8EKODS3T.pagespeed.ce.bd0skOp39u.jpg

One of Urban Meyer’s goals by the end of every spring is to have some sort of depth chart nailed down. Heading out of spring ball, Ohio State’s head coach wants to have an idea of who will be running with the Buckeyes’ first team once fall camp rolls around in August.

This spring is a little different, though, as Ohio State has a number of players being limited or held out due to injuries. That’s made it a bit more difficult for Meyer to finalize a depth chart coming out
of spring.

“This is uncharted waters for me,” Meyer said after the Buckeyes’ first practice of the spring. “You’d like to [establish a depth chart], but I don’t think so.

“With 11 guys out, that’s the thing that kicks you in the teeth. If everybody’s ready to go, I think you could do that. But we’re not.”

Meyer may not be able to do that; his job is to coach who is available to practice. He can’t predict the future.

But Ohio State has opened part of three practices this spring to the media, so we can try and do some projections ourselves. There won’t be another open viewing portion until the Buckeyes play their annual spring game, so based on what we’ve seen, here’s what Ohio State’s depth chart could look like next fall.

OFFENSE

Quarterback: J.T. Barrett (rJr); Joe Burrow (rFr); Stephen Collier (rSo)

Breakdown: The easiest position of them all to pick a starter; Barrett is set to enter his third season behind center for the Buckeyes. For the majority of spring, Burrow, a redshirt freshman has been commanding the second-team offense while Collier, a third-year sophomore, has been running with the third team. True freshman Dwayne Haskins arrives in June and is expected to compete for the No. 2 spot.

Running back: Mike Weber (rFr) OR Bri'onte Dunn (rSr); Antonio Williams (Fr)

Breakdown: Meyer says Weber and Dunn are "neck and neck" for the starting job and that he wants the fifth-year senior to take Ohio State's first carry of the season, but Weber is certainly making his push. The two shared reps with the first team during Saturday's open practice. Antonio Williams looked strong running with the second-team offense, but he'll be the third running back in the fall.

JOE BURROW IS OHIO STATE'S NO. 2 QUARTERBACK, BUT TIM BECK IS PLEASED WITH STEPHEN COLLIER'S PROGRESS DESPITE LIMITED REPS BEHIND J.T. BARRETT

69606_h.jpg,qitok=1RT4pHZT.pagespeed.ce.KIXdFXgcje.jpg

In many ways, the backup quarterback is the most important player on Ohio State's roster.

OK, you can make that argument for any football team at any level. If the starter at the game's most important position suffers an injury, it is essential the man tapped to step in as replacement performs well enough to keep the offense moving in the right direction.

That wasn't ever more true than at Ohio State in 2014, when presumptive starter Braxton Miller went down for the season with a shoulder injury 10 days before the season opener.

His backup J.T. Barrett filled in valiantly, but then endured broken ankle in the regular season finale against Michigan. Cardale Jones picked up the pieces and then some to snatch postseason victories against Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon and lead Ohio State to the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship.

Barrett is now the unquestioned starter at quarterback, months after taking back the reins from Jones in a back-and-forth battle that encompassed the majority of the 2015 season. Jones and Miller are on to the NFL—though the latter moved to wide receiver—making the depth chart behind Barrett look much different.

Enter Joe Burrow and Stephen Collier. Burrow sits as Ohio State's No. 2 quarterback according to position coach Tim Beck, but Collier's offseason and spring work impressed the coach despite limited snaps. Four-star recruit Dwayne Haskins Jr. is set for a June arrival to the program, a player Urban Meyer expects to step in and compete with Burrow and Collier for the job to be Barrett's understudy.

It's unclear how the reps at quarterback will be divided up in Saturday's spring game—Meyer is set to meet the media later this morning—but he and Beck are aware how important it is for Burrow and Collier to keep developing in the event Barrett can't play this fall.

"I think they know. Steve's been here through some of that. Joe grew up being a fan so I know that he's followed that," Beck said Thursday. "So they're well aware and they understand there's high expectations for being that guy."

Buckeye Offense is Picking Up Speed as Spring Comes to a Close

16-04-02-FB-0044-DH.jpg

It was apparent while watching the Ohio State offense last season that one of the reasons there were struggles was because the Buckeyes weren't able to run as much tempo as they have in the past.

With offensive coordinator Ed Warinner down on the sideline, the playcalling didn't have the same kind of instant crispness that it generally did under Tom Herman.

That changed over the final two games of the season when Warinner moved upstairs and teamed with co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck to give the Buckeyes two of their best offensive days of the season.

With Beck and Warinner together, there were fewer delays with the playcalling, and with a quarterback like J.T. Barrett who thrives with an up-tempo offense, the Buckeyes essentially looked like a different team.

With Warinner and Beck teaming up together once again in the press box this coming season, the Buckeyes are certainly going to utilize an up-tempo offense, which is why they have been working so hard on it in the spring.

In fact, the tempo has arguably been the area of most improvement for the offense this spring.

"I think just playing fast," Barrett said when he asked where the offense has improved this spring.

"I think tempo has been one of the things that we’ve been going for this spring and I think people have bought into it, especially the O-linemen. I think that’s one of the tough duties. You just blocked a three technique and you’ve got to run 20 yards down field and you’ve got to run another play fast. I think that’s something that our guys are buying into. I think it helps us too being that if our guys are tired, just imagine how tired those other guys are."

URBAN MEYER, TIM BECK SEE OHIO STATE TAKING PROPER STEPS TO GET MORE OUT OF PASSING GAME IN 2016

69670_h.jpg,qitok=V3V-uPUY.pagespeed.ce.2jZhCWcSDq.jpg

"Just OK."

That phrase is one muttered often by Urban Meyer as his team trudges through its spring drills in preparation for the annual spring game Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Over the past month and change, Meyer dubbed everything from the defensive line's development, to true freshman Michael Jordan and Evan Lisle's growth and even backup quarterback Joe Burrow's performance during a scrimmage "OK."

Not great. Not bad. "Just OK."

Monday, he used those two letters again to describe Tim Beck's coaching performance at Ohio State in 2015. He then noted how the entire offensive staff must do more in 2016 than it did a year ago when the Buckeyes finished 41st in the country with 434.1 yards per game (11th rushing with 245.2 yards per game, 110th passing at just 188.8 yards per game).

"He took over for a very valuable guy and I just expect more out of him and our offensive staff in general," Meyer said of Beck. "I think we have to do a better job than we did a year ago.

"I see it happening this spring."

Beck does too, and knows he needs to raise the level of his performance as compared to 2015, his first shot at stepping in for former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and current Houston head coach Tom Herman. Criticism fell upon his shoulders after Ohio State lost to Michigan State 17-14 in November, when Barrett finished 9-of-16 passing for 46 yards and a touchdown. The offense managed just 132 total yards that day.

Ed Warinner coached from the press box the final two games of the season against Michigan and Notre Dame. Ohio State's offense averaged 489 yards (327 rushing) of total offense and 43 points in those contests, leading to more ire toward Beck from fans.

"You ask yourself, ‘Did I prepare our guys well enough to go out and beat those guys?’ Probably not," Beck said last week of the Michigan State loss. "Obviously, we didn’t beat them. I always start pointing the finger on me."

Warinner will remain in the box alongside Beck this fall to assist with play calling. The move looks good on paper, but the passing game must improve since 2015 Silver Football winner and running back Ezekiel Elliott is on to the NFL.

"Last year when we had some veteran players, they knew it. This group, you almost had to go back to square one and re-teach some of the things," Beck said. "Boy, it’s been, the techniques and fundamentals have been really good. I’ve been really pleased at what I’ve seen in that. I think that’s where it starts. When you start executing the little things, the big things obviously end up following."

Nothing I would like more than for Beck to have a redemption season. I've been in the "blame" camp since probably before the MSU game and that one set me off as well as most others I've talked to. Love to see the QB's elevate and the offense blow up with him being a big catalyst this season.

Yes, I want to see a tOSU version of the Kansas offense the two of them ran.

OSU Coaches Fine Tuning J.T. Barrett This Spring

Watching J.T. Barrett as a redshirt freshman in 2014 there were times when he looked like a finished product. Watching him as a redshirt sophomore in 2015, it was clear that he was far from it.

The important thing is that neither Barrett nor his coaches ever considered him even close to a finished product, and so their work has been ongoing and unrelenting.

While Barrett had some struggles on the field last year, he focused on gaining a greater understanding of his pre-snap reads and film study, and it served him well.

Like last season, quarterbacks coach Tim Beck and Barrett have some specifics that they are focused on this spring.

16-04-02-FB-0036-DH.jpg

"The biggest thing right now is just getting him to play fast and getting him to play consistent," Beck explained. "Kind of how he did toward the end of the year and how he did in 2014. I like what I see so far out of him."
