Aaron Gretz was named to 2015 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
Seventy-five catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 4, 2015.
Gretz is hitting .273 with five runs scored, two doubles and six walks in 10 starts. Defensively, he has started behind the plate in eight games for the Buckeyes. He has caught two runners stealing in six attempts this year. In his career, a native of Apple Valley, Minn., Gretz has started as catcher in 100 games and has committed just five errors. His career batting average is .263 with 46 runs scored, 19 doubles, one triple, 44 RBI and 66 walks.
Gretz becomes the fourth Buckeye to be named to the watch list: Derek Kinnear (2003), Eric Fryer (2007) and Dan Burkhart (2009 and 2010).
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 14, 2015. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2015. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25, 2015.
