2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

Future is bright with Deandre Yedlin and Julian Green both showing out today.

One thing the US really needs is more meaningful reps against elite teams. Restricting yourself to grudge matches against Mexico in the Gold Cup is kinda limiting IMO. The USSF should push for the special 2016 Copa America to become a regular quadrennial event, a la Euro. Playing the likes of Brazil, Argentina, etc. for a prestigious title in TV-friendly timezones in between World Cups can only help the USMNT (and El Tri, for that matter) and soccer's popularity stateside. Especially if it's always happening concurrently with Euro. Spain/France in the morning, US/Chile in the evening? Yes, please.

it feels as if the US is lacking that striker that puts fear into an opponent. even Altidore I don't think really scares anybody. hopefully, by the next WC, that next big star will have emerged. whether it yedlin or this kid Green remains to be seen.

Does anyone happen to know the reason(s) for the grudge Eric Wynalda seems to have against Jurgen Klinsmann? Or is it Wynalda is just bad at TV or 'trolling' for reaction (i.e. most people on ESPN, even though he's on FS1)?

Asking because it seems like Wynalda attacks Klinsmann at any and all opportunities (even if there isn't anything there).

We had no business being in that game, should have lost by 3 goals in regulation except Tim Howard is the fucking man.

And yet, if Wondolowski makes a play that he probably makes 9/10 times, we're advancing. Just devastating.
Fifa said this morning, and I heard it late yesterday ... they would have (incorrectly IMHO) ruled Wondo offsides

On another note if I have to hear anyone else say "if we would have had Landon Donovan would likely woulda won the game" .... Landon woulda been dead legged worse than the rest of this team. (I've never been a huge fan of his, he's made a few good plays in the world cup but was wholly underwhelming to me, and now everyone treats him like he's Messi in his prime... at this point he's fat Ronaldo without the skill or the world cup goals.)

I think everyone got caught up making a run out of the Group of Death, instead of focusing on what this world cup was about for the US... this was about 2018, and being a serious contender there.

I think the whole group of death was over-rated in the first place. Germany is really good, and has a shot to win the whole shebang. Ghana is ok, and I thought that if we beat them, our chances of advancing were pretty good, as Portugal is quite possibly the most over rated team on a consistant basis.

For the record, when I say that Donovan could have been useful in this last game I'm speaking of a scenario in which he would have been used exactly as Wondo was. I wouldn't have wanted to use him in any of the other games, but in the final moments of an elimination game when you have a chance to smash and grab I think they could have got the minutes out of that they needed.

Also, not really related to your point in particular, but I really don't like the trend of American players returning to or sticking with MLS. As somebody who cares about the national team more than the domestic league, I see this as a bad thing for future development. This country needs its players to play abroad, against better competition. They need to be exposed to different styles of play. We need midfielders and forwards to play in games were they don't get all day on the ball. They need to learn to hold the ball and pass under pressure. That won't happen in the MLS as it's currently constituted, and I don't see the overall quality of the league over the next four years.

Doesn't help that they keep watering it down with more franchises...if anything I fear the quality of play will go down.

I think any team in Group G could have won that group. If people think Portugal was overrated, what should we think about the other three "brand name" teams in that group? Uruguay got pantsed by Costa Rica. Italy only got three points because they got to play England. England were garbage and in my estimation were only better a handful of teams in this tournament.

I have to disagree. Costa Rica has played an inspired tournament, but that doesn't change the fact that I would collectively take Uruguay, Italy, and England over Ghana, the US and Portugal any day. But, it's completely moot anyway.
