2013 Week 8 B1G FB Open Thread

OK, I see what you're doing here.

Alright, back to bidness here, who ya got this week in the conference formerly called the Big Ten?

Minnie at NW, Who gets the bigger break here? Goldie the Gopher for catching the Purple Gang right after they got bloodied by the buckeyes and then stomped by the badgers, or Milton the Mildcat for finally getting Minnie or Bye on their schedule? Minnie's coach, Jerry Kill, is becoming the biggest no-show since Sly and the Family Stone. Sad to say, I know he can't help it, but he's gotta go. I like Fitz to get the Kitties back to playing tough.

Purdue at East Lansing. Sparty still has time to be Sparty, but it ain't going to be this weekend, Hail, hail to ol' Purdue, oh hail to the black and the blue.

Indiana at Michigan: When did you ever look at this game and say, "Too close to call?" What happens when a resistible force meets a moveable object? I dunno, but I like the idea that the bucks get to bust the Joker's win at home streak cherry. Hell, even Dick Wad went 2 and 0 against the Hoosiers. Pickin' the blue.

Bucky Badger at Illinois. The illini fight song, Oskee wow wow (that's right folks, Oskee wow wow) always reminds me of the Mothers of Invention hit, Wowie, Zowie. No doubt they've made great strides since the Zooker was run out of town, but I'm personally glad there's no way the Bucks will have to play the Badgers again this year. On Wisconsin.

Iowa comes to the 'shoe for a crowning. The bucks may lose a Big Ten game this year- like if Indiana catches fire again, or Penn State's Hackenberg keeps on playing like a sophomore- but I don't see it happening against the Hawkeyes.

Is Nebraska at Bye or Open Date? Either way, I bet Martinez throws another interception.

Penn State faces Idle, Eric will run rings around them logically and Nurse Diesel will explode on BO'B. The real fun comes next week in Columbus.

Extra credit. I'd root for USC in this game even if Kiffin were still in charge. Fortunately he's gone. After this it's nothing but service academies and froth (well there is the ritual purging of the pagan babies from Utah, at home in South Bend) until the Irish have to play at Palo Alto, so it's important that the Trojans win one for the Kiffer. Fight on for USC!

Boobs

I real question is the spreads??

Minny is getting 12.5 on the road at NW: The Cats are coming off of a really tough loss and a beat down. I think they are exhausted and really need a Bye to get pulled back together. Minny on the other hand just had a Bye week to recover after the beat down from TTUN. I still think the Gophers are one of the worst in the Big Ten and NW at home rebounds with a win. I think Vegas has this one called right on the money but the Cats cover, win by 17.

Purdue is getting 27.5 on the road at Sparty: Sparty just came off of a really impressive beat down of Indiana and Iowa. They are finding their offense, but the beat downs are still by 20 or less. Did Sparty find their offense? Will it keep getting better? Or was Indiana more of a fluke? On the other hand Purdue seems to lose to everyone by at least 30. They just lost to Nebraska by nearly 40. They played Wisconsin and Notre Dame much closer, losing by 31 and 7. MSU, after handily beating Indiana, and with the worst team in the Big Ten coming to town, they didn't practice very hard and their offense show it. This is a tough one, but I think it comes down to Sparty wouldn't beat anyone by 27.5. Boilermakers cover.

Indiana is getting 8.5 on the road at TTUN: TTUN looks bad. As bas as they have looked in a while. Indiana just got killed by MSU. I think ttUn rebounds at home with a win and I think they will cover the spread, winning by 13.

Illinois is getting 13 (after opening at +10.5) at home against Wisconsin. Just shows you where the betting is going. The Ilini had a week to sit in an ice bath after the Corn thoroughly inserted the plunger...repeatedly. Nebraska at least had the decency to use some lube, as Wisconsin took it to NW pretty brutally. Illinois has looked very hot and cold this year, and I don't think their cold streak has ended. Wisky is hot and I'm glad we don't have to play them again. #2 team in the Big Ten right now, and will cover, win by at least 20. I wouldn't be surprised to see it move from 13 up to 14.5 before kickoff.

Iowa is getting 17 points going into the Shoe. I don't want to jinx anything, so let's just take care of business and walk away with a W

This week will tell a lot about scUM going forward. Their offense is under heavy fire, and rightfully so. IU's defense is bad, but if they continue to insist on those ridiculous 1st down runs into the line, they've learned nothing from the last four games. I think IU's defense is bad enough that they could have some success with it, but neither their line or RBs are good enough for that to work against even decent teams. If Gardner's still turning the ball over 2-3 times, IU's offense could make that game more interesting than it should be.

My picks:
Minnesota @ Northwestern: Northwestern has to be all sorts of beat up and demoralized. Luckily for them, Minnesota is in complete disarray as a program right now. The Wildcats get back on track after two losses. They don't cover, but win by 9.

Purdue @ Michigan State: Crazy line in this one (MSU -27.5). Purdue is easily the worst team in the B1G this year, and that's saying something. MSU looks like they may have turned a corner with Connor Cook at quarterback. I think they win the wide-open Legends Division and go on to face OSU in the B1G Championship Game. Purdue covers (barely) but still gets trounced. Spartans by 27.

Indiana @ Michigan: This one wasn't so difficult to pick straight-up as it was with the line considered. I think Michigan bounces back in a nice way after that exhausting loss in State College. Wolverines by a touchdown.

Iowa @ Ohio State: Easy pick here. With both teams coming off a bye week, I simply look at who's the more talented team. Iowa hasn't really had any bad losses this year, but OSU is fresh, rested, and ready to roll. Buckeyes by 13.

Wisconsin @ Illinois: This might be a sneaky game to pick. Illinois has shown they can put up points (avg. 36 ppg) and this is a 7 pm kickoff in Champaign. The Illini jump out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Wisconsin runs its way back into it. Badgers don't cover but win by 10.

So you have seen the improvement as well?

Yep, I feel like a bunch of them put too much effort into a few games each year and then cruise the rest of the year.

If you say cruise you mean cruise to a bunch of loses which they should easily win. I'm all for fighting, but that fight against OSU cost them a beat down to Wisconsin and a loss to Minny. Now they stop fighting, and I see 2-3 more loses in their future.
