Looking back on my First Round predictions, I went 3-4 in the Western Conference with one correct game total & one correct game total with the wrong team. The Eastern Conference was a different story as I went 1-4, although I had one correct game total with the wrong team. 4-8 isn't bad at all for playoff predictions as it's easily the most unpredictable in all of sports.
Let's take a gander at the 2nd round now.
Eastern Conference.
#1 Pittsburgh Penguins - #7 Ottawa Senators.
Game 1 - Ottawa Senators @ Pittsburgh Penguins - Tonight: 7:30 pm ET - NBC Sports Network
Pittsburgh was certainly challenged by the Isles in the first round & will find no respite in the Sens. Ottawa handled Montreal in five, but not without a fight of there own. Ottawa probably won't give Pittsburgh as many problems as New York did offensively, but there strength lies in there defense & goaltending. If Craig Anderson plays like he's capable of, he could give Pittsburgh's plethora of offensive talent fits all series. This is a real battle of powerful offense (Pittsburgh) vs. powerful defense (Ottawa) that should be very competitive. Pittsburgh swept the season series 3-0. Verdict: Pittsburgh in six. Too many weapons for Ottawa to handle, despite having one of the games best goalies. If Craig Anderson gets hot though, Pittsburgh could be in real trouble.
#4 Boston Bruins - #6 New York Rangers.
Game 1 - New York Rangers @ Boston Bruins - Thursday: 7:30 pm ET - NBC Sports Network
What a series this is going to be. Two very physical teams, so expect some rough & tumble hockey. Both teams went seven games in the first round, so both will still be battered. New York only won one game on the road against Washington, but that was in Game 7 & Boston only won two games at home against Toronto, but one was in Game 7. New York won the season series 2-1, but both Rangers wins came in shootouts. This is going to be a very unpredictable series as both teams match up pretty evenly across the board & despite Boston being the better team IMO, they're very inconsistent even within the same game. I would expect some low-scoring affairs in this one. Verdict: Boston in seven. They're a better team, but are capable of letdowns time & again. New York's consistency was even worse all season, but played there hearts out to beat Washington. Two great goalies, but if Hank keeps playing like he did in the last two games, New York has a chance. Will Rick Nash show up ?
Western Conference.
#1 Chicago Blackhawks - #7 Detroit Red Wings
Game 1 - Detroit Red Wings @ Chicago Blackhawks - Wednesday: 8:00 pm ET - NBC Sports Network
Hockey gods couldn't have scripted it any better with Detroit & Chicago squaring off in an Original Six match up that could be the last for many years as Detroit moves to the East next season. Chicago will be much more rested after ousting Minnesota in five games, while Detroit took seven to make work of Anaheim. Chicago will win this series as they're a much better & deeper team, but Detroit will make it a lot tougher for them than most would think. Detroit still has a lot of question marks on the back end & Chicago will exploit that, but Detroit has nothing to lose in this as all of the pressure is on Chicago to win the Stanley Cup. I think every game will be close, but ultimately Chicago should prevail given how good they are top to bottom. Verdict: Chicago in six. Detroit will push them harder than they expect, but they get the most from every player on the team & there third and fourth lines will be too much to handle. Jimmy Howard is hot right now & could give Chicago fits. Expect a very hard fought series.
#5 San Jose Sharks - #6 Los Angeles Kings
Game 1 - Los Angeles Kings @ San Jose Sharks - Tonight: 10:00 pm ET - NBC Sports Network
The defending Stanley Cup Champions and the perennial playoff choke artists. Despite that, this has the makings of being an incredible playoff series. Two very skilled & very physical hockey clubs. Only difference being that San Jose falls apart in the playoffs on a regular basis & it remains to be seen when that will change. Don't expect much scoring despite the capabilities of both teams, because both are tremendous on defense & have great goalies. I only think L.A. will win because San Jose has no playoff pedigree, because San Jose is just as good if not better than them. This is right there with Boston-New York as the best 2nd round match up from a sheer competitive perspective as both teams are pretty even across the board. Verdict: Los Angeles in seven. San Jose is well rested after sweeping Vancouver & L.A. played one of the most physical series ever played against St. Louis. Quick is playing tremendously right now & L.A. goes where he takes them as they don't score very much. San Jose will find a way to lose like they always do, but expect the most competitive series of the entire 2nd round here.
Anyone else feel free to throw out any predictions ? Playoff Hockey is the most unpredictable of all the sports, so it's nearly impossible to be completely accurate no matter how much you watch the game.
