I have not watched New Mexico play at all this year. What's with all their hype? I see on their roster that they've a 7 footer, is he mad-skilled or something? Or are they just a solid all-around team?

Any insight is obviously appreciated.

Tony Snell passes the look test of a swingman who can help take a team deep in the tourney. But overall they have struggled on offense this year, only 42% as a team and have been noted for having scoring droughts. They have good power numbers due to having a schedule loaded with top-100 teams but haven't been tested against top-15 teams.

The only top 25 team they have faced is St. Louis, and they got their ass handed to them. Their biggest win of the year was Cincy by 1, and that turned out to not be so big. Yet the CBS guys are falling all over themselves trying to hype New Mexico as a Final Four team.

If you read Marshall Henderson's Twitter timeline (NativeFlash22), he's a piece of work.

It might be comical watching him play Wisconsin, if Wisky slows the thing down to a crawl.
This is what I'm thinking Ryan's strategy is going to be coming into the game. I don't know how patient Henderson will be if he's getting chased around for 35 seconds every possession.

They have a legitimate front-court with a 7' center in Alex Kirk and a 6'9" power forward in Cameron Barstow. Both of those two work well back to the basket, rebound well, and defend the basket. Kirk will also hit the outside jump shot on occasion. Tony Snell and Kendall Williams offer athleticism in the back court and can take the game over offensively if need be; Williams has scored in bunches and Snell can hit the 3-ball with regularity. Hugh Greenwood plays the 2, is an average shooter, but plays great defense and has a ton of experience (played international-level basketball for the AUS). Though their schedule lacks top-15 wins, they played a schedule of depth racking in a bunch of top-50/top-100 wins (Ken Pomeroy ranks their schedule as a top-20, Jeff Sagarin ranks their schedule as a top-40).

They don't shoot the ball well for the most part, but they don't have to. They make their FT (4 of 5 starters including both big men shoot >70% from the line), draw fouls due to the inside play, rebound well, and play good/consistent for the entire game defense. Reminds me of Michigan State teams. I'd count on Kirk and Barstow getting ~30 points between them and if Snell and/or Williams hits their jump shots then they get to 60 points easily in most games and with their defense, they could go far with that. Not many teams have the size that the Lobos have, and they use it well on the offensive- and defensive-sides. Since Ohio State is similarly offensively challenged and has spurts of missed-jump shots I think people see the Lobos as more offensively capable/consistent due to their size advantage in the paint.

Did anyone else wake up this morning and feel like the Buckeyes have been put in a tough situation? Yesterday I heard several "experts" call the west "the weakest region by far" and it started to make me cringe. Knowing that we get more shit when we lose than we get credit when we win, how far does this team have to get in the dance?

Well, at least it's not the Midwest.

Personally, I like this much better than seeing a #1 overall OSU team being placed in the toughest bracket.

Yes the Midwest is loaded. If the Buckeyes were there I'd imagine that the expectations would be a tad lower. My point is that in the west, I don't think anyone has more to lose, with a bigger target on their back than the Buckeyes.

It's Gonzaga.

They finally reached #1 in the polls. They finally grabbed a 1 seed. They're playing out west. The expectations for this former Cinderella have never been higher. They're now expected to reach the final four, somewhere they've never been in their history.

I like being the second fiddle to their pressure, with a coach and several players who just made that final four trip last year...and beat Gonzaga along the way.
