Boston Bombing Victim in Iconic Photo Helped Identify Attackers

Minutes before the bombs blew up in Boston, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.

Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, Bauman was waiting among the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.

Two and a half minutes later, the bag exploded, tearing Jeff's legs apart. A picture of him in a wheelchair, bloodied and ashen, was broadcast around the world as he was rushed to Boston Medical Center. He lost both legs below the knee.

"He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, 'bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,'" Chris Bauman said yesterday in an interview.

Those words may help crack the mystery of who perpetrated one of the highest-profile acts of terror in the U.S. since the 2001 assault on New York City and the Washington area, one that killed three people and wounded scores.

While still in intensive care, Jeff Bauman gave the FBI a description of the man he saw, his brother said. Bauman's information helped investigators narrow down whom to look for in hours of video of the attack, he said.

That pic is the location of bomb #2. Krystle Campbell was killed by bomb #1 (the one close to the finish line). All of the gruesome pics that are floating around right now are from bomb #1.

Is anyone following the madness going on in Boston right now?

MIT police officer shot & killed...weapon taken...someone car jacked....police chasing perpetrators....police SUV stolen...perpetrators cornered...police receiving rifle fire....2nd officer down....possible GRENADES....police retreat....call to turn off cell phones for fear of detonating explosives...

An MIT cop was shot...later dies.

A gas station was robbed.

Mercedes carjacked....driver later escapes.

Police chase down Mercedes....gunfight ensues...possible use of explosives.

No idea if MIT shooting is connected with gas station robber. Car jacking probably related to gas station robbery. Possibly none of it connected to Boston Marathon bombing.

One man in custody (Saudi national?). Guy walking home from work with backpack apprehended but then released.

One or possibly two suspects still at large.

EOD detonated at least one possible explosive device.

Suspect in custody & a second officer both taken to hospital to treat gunshot wounds.

At least five different local departments on the scene. FBI, DHS, & other federal agencies on location. Diplomatic Corps reportedly there. Reports of armed national guardsmen at street corners.

Johnny 5 roaming the streets looking for IEDs.

Ben Afleck saying they won't take him alive.

Explosives Detonated in Massachusetts Standoff

Two young men, armed with guns and explosives in what appeared to be backpacks, engaged in a violent standoff with dozens of police on a street in Watertown, Mass., Thursday night, a resident said.

Andrew Kitzenburg, 29, said he looked out of this third floor window to see two young men of slight build in jackets shooting at dozens of police officers from behind a black Mercedes SUV. The officers and the men were 70 yards apart, he said, and engaged in 'constant gunfire.'

A police SUV 'drove towards the shooters,' he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway.

The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. 'They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most.' It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.

The other, he said, got back into the SUV, turned it toward the officers and 'put the pedal to the metal.' The car 'went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.'

The two men left 'a few backpacks right by the car, and there is a bomb robot out there now.' Police had told residents to stay away from their windows, he said.
