This was a young team last year, after losing some great senior talent the year before.

Returning is 2010 B1G Freshman of the Year Pitcher Melanie Nichols. She won 21 games for the Buckeyes and fanned 130 batters as freshman, but missed all of last season after shoulder surgery. She tested the shoulder during fall ball and looks great.

Also returning is Senior Alicia Herron (no relation). Last season she hit .354 with 9 homeruns and 30 rbis and was a perfect 10/10 on stolen base attempts.

Lots of young talent that played a lot last year after season ending injuries to three key players. This year's squad should be more experienced and a deeper than last year.

Go Bucks!

Ohio State signs four for 2013

Columbus, Ohio - Ohio State has signed four Ohio high school standouts to letters of intent to play softball for the Buckeyes, head coach Linda Kalafatis announced today. Mandie Abbruzzese, Jesse Machovina, Cammi Prantl and Jayla Saibene will be joining the Buckeyes for the 2013 season.

Abbruzzese is a team captain for Coach Todd DelBoccio at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, where she was team MVP as a junior.
Machovina is a three-sport athlete from St. Clairsville High School, where she has lettered in softball, basketball and swimming.
Prantl was the Mid-State League conference player of the year as a junior, earning all-district, all-metro and all-state honors at Teays Valley High School.
Saibene is a four-year starter at Massillon Perry High School in Canton, helping Coach Allison Heppe's squad win the 2010 state championship.

Suprisingly all of these stayed in state... she's normally got at least one that comes in from the West Coast in every class

After two weekend tournaments, the Lady Bucks are 6-4 on the season and heading to Cathedral City, CA for the Cathedral City Classic.

At the UNLV Classic, The Bucks dropped game one to Texas Tech 7-4. Then finished the weekend 4-1 with wins over San Jose State (6-3), UNLV (4-3), Long Beach State (10-5), and Idaho State (6-2).

This weekend's schedule includes: Fresno State, Oregon State, Cal State Fullerton and Colorado State. The team here to watch is 7-3 Oregon State. With wins over BYU, Nebraska, Notre Dame and UCF, The Beavers (giggity) are a good test to see where Ohio State really is this year.

Ohio State Does Not Renew Kalafatis' Contract
National search to begin immediately
May 15, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The contract of Linda Kalafatis, head softball coach at Ohio State, will not be renewed, Heather Lyke, Ohio State associate athletics director, announced Tuesday. Kalafatis has served at the helm of the Buckeyes the last 16 seasons, beginning her tenure as head coach in 1997.

“We appreciate Linda’s commitment to the institution and our softball program. She is truly an outstanding person, and we thank her for all she gave to our student-athletes and Buckeye Nation,” Lyke said. “We wish her the best as she pursues her next opportunities. We will begin a national search for our next head coach immediately.”

Kalafatis was 538-358 in her career at Ohio State. She led the squad to six NCAA tournament berths, including the program’s first NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2009, and to a Big Ten championship in 2007. Kalafatis, who was the 2007 Big Ten Coach of the Year, helped lead the squad to 30 wins or more in 10 of 16 seasons in Columbus. In 2012, Kalafatis was one of two Big Ten active coaches with more than 800 career wins, placing her among the Top 25 active coaches in the country.
