The return of Mario Lemieux to the ice highlights Friday's announcement by the Pittsburgh Penguins of an alumni game as part of the festivities at this year's Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The game against a team of Washington Capitals alumni, to be played on New Year's Eve Day at Heinz Field -- site of the Classic -- will mark the first time Lemieux, the owner of the Penguins, will play in an organized game since he announced his final retirement as a player in 2006.

It comes a day before the current-day Penguins play the current-day Capitals in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

"We all grew up playing on outdoor rinks, so we?re really looking forward to having this chance to skate on the Winter Classic rink at Heinz Field," Lemieux said. "There is so much history between the Penguins and Capitals and it will be good to get together and see friends on both benches."

The chance to play with Lemieux is already bringing out the stars. Hall of Famers Paul Coffey, Ron Francis and Bryan Trottier, along with recently retired Bill Guerin, have already signed on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins alumni team, which will take on an alumni team from the Washington Capitals on Dec. 31. The Caps? team will be led by Peter Bondra.

Full rosters for the Penguins and Capitals alumni will be announced soon.

Tickets, priced at $25, will allow spectators to watch the alumni game at 9:30 a.m. and the Penguins' practice at 11:30 a.m. Washington's 2 p.m. practice will be closed to the public.
...

$25 is steep for an old timers game, but you get to see some pretty good pens play.

this 24/7 is an interesting look into the teams, and i think gives showcases some of the guys personality. as good or better than hard knocks, imo. mainly based on the reality that it is actually occurring in season...

Boudreau's profanity seems forced. This coming from a guy who curses like there's no tomorrow.

But 24/7 is awesome.. I love it. "Fuck you, Geno."

That's like winning $10 at a beauty pageant in Reynoldsburg.

There will be football and there will be bowl games on that Sunday as well as NFL. The NFL and the NFLPA aren't that far apart that any type of lockout will last that long.

And yes, Buttman and his cronies is dumb enough to put the Winter Classic (probably Pittspuke vs. Toronto or something) up against those two.

it is what it is. ten million americans will sit on their cans in front of a tv on 1/1. toss in a solid canadian group and some euros and the numbers are what they are.

http://www.eyeonsportsmedia.com/2010/01/2009-2010-college-football-bowl.html

last years bowl game numbers, if the winter classic draws its 3.5-4.5 as it has drawn in the past then it ends up somewhere between the outback bowl and the cotton bowl with americans alone. not good, not great. but certainly exposes the sport to a large group who would not normally tune in.

for some reason i see fox/cbs/nbc not liking the concept of having to decided between their programming choices...

I'd play this game early afternoon on Super Bowl Sunday and get even bigger ratings. The pre game shows go on for hours that day and there's nothing else to see but college hoops until about 6:00.
