2011 TSUN shenanigans and arguments (off season)

For those who really don't remember Dennis Franklin he is an interesting story for another reason.

Used to be that you could not go to the Rose Bowl in back to back years. OSU went in 1972 just after they changed that rule. The next year OSU and UM were both undefeated when they played to a 10-10 tie (one of the greatest wins in OSU history according to Gordon Gee). It seemed natural that UM would go, but it was Franklin's injury in that game that persuaded the Big Ten ADs to send OSU instead as the better team.

Also of note: Franklin's injury was a broken collarbone - an injury more common to riders on the Tour de France. However, I am unable to confirm that he suffered said injury falling off a stationary bike.

And a final note: In 1974 OSU again beat UM (and Franklin) 12-10 on four field goals. This is famous as the only time in college football history that a team has won a game kicking only field goals.

(I can still remember the emotion of UM's would-be game winning field goal just missing in that one.)

On so many levels. I vote GPA. Over and over and over and over again.

That is all.:osu:

Traitorous piece of filth from Massilon.

scUM first black QB, started from 72-74.

0-2-1

Never saw the inside of the Rose Bowl without buying a ticket.

May he suck cock in hell.

*sarcasm*What a resume.*/sarcasm*

It's amazing how much shit talking comes out of those fucktards, and yet they never back it up (sans Harbaugh).

Uh, you're only off by two decades. :tongue2: Gee was referring to the 13-13 tie in 1992 which was Cooper's first non-loss to Michgan and broke a four-game losing streak in The Game.

According to Bo, the kick was good.

It seemed natural that UM would go, but it was Franklin's injury in that game that persuaded the Big Ten ADs to send OSU instead as the better team.

According to Bo, it was the petty jealousies of the Big 10 AD's that swayed the vote.

I enjoyed watching Bo's meltdowns after those two games. Good times.

TSUN's record with Franklin as QB coming into The Game:

1972: 10-0
1973: 10-0
1974: 10-0

And he never beat tOSU, and never played in any bowl game. Good times. Franklin fumbling the snap on the goal line on 4th and 1 in 1972 means that he needs to share goat honors with Lantry for that 3-year period.

I thought they changed that "Rose Bowl or nothing" rule for scUM's sorry asses and he got an orange Bowl out of the deal?

Wrong year?

They changed the rule based on what happened to TSUN in '73 and '74, but their first Orange Bowl under the revised rules was after the '75 season, without Franklin.

Thanks, I had my years wrong.

So for clarification, the scUM teams of 1972, 1973 and 1974 only lost two and tied one game in their career (all to OSU) and never saw a Bowl game because of it.

I've got schadenfreude induced wood.

The Buckeyes had 3 amazing goal line stands in that game. I remember thinking that Pete Cusick was the main reason for that. I was surprised when ABC named the linebackers, collectively, as the defensive player of the game.

The middle linebacker of that bunch, Rick Middleton, is perhaps best known for being drafted before his teammate Randy Gradishar, who was a better linebacker both at Ohio State and in the NFL (Middleton is to Gradishar as Eric Kumerow is to Chris Spielman). No disrespect to Mr. Middleton. He was a great Buckeye; and he wrote a great memoir of that particular game that you can read

HERE

EDIT: I meant to mention that, in that write-up, Mr. Middleton says that the fumble would not have mattered on that play. Considering TSUN's futility on short yardage situations throughout that game, it's hard to argue with that.

God bless you, Lt. Tickle:

"We were joking around (when) we went over the Big House," Abdelkader told the Detroit News. "If we'd had a couple of bombs on it (the jet), maybe we would have dropped a couple on there."
Tickle, an Alabama native, played along.
"One of the maneuvers that I can show him is a bombing hop," Tickle said. "We just happened to be over Ann Arbor at the time, and I know he's a Michigan State guy. So it worked out great we could pretend we were bombing Ann Arbor for him."

I will never forget that game as long as I live. I was sitting in A-Deck on the east side in the last section at the open end. IIRC most if not all of the goal line stands were at the closed end of the stadium, and we couldn't see a thing, except the crowd reaction on all the stops at the goal line. There was no trickery, just line up and see who is toughest, and the Buckeyes were toughest on that day! I recall Gradishar also flying all over the place throughout that game.
