Players say they will prove naysayers wrong

The feeling never gets old, and it might never be appreciated more than it is this year.

It?s finally time for football.

Yesterday was media day for Ohio State. A day earlier, the team had its jersey scrimmage. It was two days at Ohio Stadium that served to shake off the turmoil of the previous months and remind the Buckeyes why they came here and who they are.

?Every time I come in this stadium, it puts chills down my back,? senior left tackle Mike Adams said. ?People don?t understand what it?s like to play in the ?Shoe.?

Adams is one of the four Buckeyes suspended for the first five games because of the tattoo and memorabilia scandal that cost Jim Tressel his job.

That sordidness has dominated the headlines. But this weekend has served as a figurative turning of the page.

?I think the thing that really hit home was walking in the Woody (Hayes Athletic Center) today and seeing on the countdown clock that we?ve got 12 days left,? center Mike Brewster said, referring to the season opener Sept. 3 against Akron. ?It?s starting to hit me that it?s go time. It?s going to be a chance for us to do some amazing things this year.?

Because of the scandal?s impact and the seven starters lost on defense, poll voters do not envision this as a vintage Buckeyes season. But Ohio State is quietly confident that the naysayers are wrong.

?It?s time to look forward,? said wide receiver DeVier Posey, one of the suspended players. ?We actually like this role we?re in as a senior class. I think the three years I?ve been here we were preseason No. 2 and No. 5 and No. 2. I think it?s kind of good to come from an underdog role. It brings the best out of you.?

The adversity, the Buckeyes believe, has made them stronger.

?You have a choice: You can either come together or fall apart,? Adams said. ?We came to Ohio State to win games. We didn?t plan on falling apart. We?re a family. We?ve all got each other?s back.?
