Noticed that the shorts have player numbers on them... is that new for this year, given the "equipment" concerns?

If they can't sell anything else they wear, the market for autographed jockstraps is going to go sky-high.

My notes from today's practice:

Offense:

It is still difficult to judge a lot of the offensive skill positions given the circumstances during practice. I explain that line of thought further in an upcoming podcast (so check that out), but I will leave the "he looked good, he looked bad" analysis to other writers.

  • Jaamal Berry spent some time split out wide today during team drills, which indicates Jordan Hall might not be the only RB used in a hybrid role this season.
  • At the same time, Hall seemed to spend more time with the RBs and less time with the WRs than he did yesterday. Being early in the camp, the coaches are clearly still trying to work out the finer details in their offensive strategy.
  • All of the tight ends (not just Stoneburner) spent time split out wide in certain formations today. Not to be outdone, Stoneburner did spend time lined up all the way to the sideline, which was wider than any of the other TEs went.
  • WR Corey Brown spent time giving one-on one instruction to freshman WR Evan Spencer. Brown appears to be taking on a leadership role among the WRs as one of the more experienced players there.
  • WR Coach Stan Drayton is a very hands on coach. Multiple times he ran onto the field mid-play to encourage a WR to finish a play strong or to get an extra block in.

Defense:

It looks like the starters are pretty well set on defense already, but there are some open competitions, most noticeably at CB opposite Travis Howard. There was also a lot of movement along the defensive line today, and some younger players spent time with the second team.
Right now, it is all about getting players reps and seeing what they can do on defense.

  • There were some changes along the defensive line today, with certain players spending most of their time at different positions from yesterday.
  • Adam Bellamy spent most of his time at strong side defensive end today after splitting time at DT with Johnathan Hankins yesterday. He was on the field with the first team and the second team, and moved down to DT when John Simon came on the field at end. It seems clear that Bellamy will be a huge part of the rotation this season and the coaches are expecting a lot of him.
  • JT Moore spent a lot of time at LEO with the first team today.
  • Melvin Fellows replaced Darryl Baldwin as the primary strong side DE with the second team.
  • Joel Hale spent time at SS DE after repping primarily at DT yesterday, with Fellows sliding over to DT at times when Hale was at end.
  • Freshman Michael Bennett continued to spend a majority of his time at strong side DE with the third team, along with fellow freshman Chase Farris.
  • Kenny Hayes, who played DE in high school, received most of his reps at DT with the third team.
  • Freshman DE Steve Miller played LEO almost exclusively.
  • Cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson paid a lot of one-on-one attention to Bradley Roby and was pushing him throughout the passing drills. Johnson also spent time with Dominic Clarke and he was clearly focusing on the competition for the starting spot opposite Travis Howard.
  • LB Chris Maxwell made a very nice interception off of a bobbled catch from WR T.Y. Williams during group passing drills.
  • Nate Oliver once again spend most of the day at Will Linebacker with the 2nd team, and given the recent losses at the position, that seems like a permanent move for him.
  • Doran Grant spent time with the second team at CB.
  • Freshman LB Curtis Grant stripped the ball during group passing drills and fellow freshman LB Ryan Shazier scooped it up and ran with it, which will hopefully be a series of events repeated often in future games.
  • S Jamie Wood spent time as the 2nd string SS when Christian Bryant slid down to star.
Miscellaneous:

  • RB Boom Herron continues to be the vocal leader on the team, continuing a trend that he started at least as far back as winter conditioning.
  • WR Corey Brown is also very vocal and has some humorous interactions with the DBs from time to time.
  • During a conditioning drill, Michigan's fight song was played over the loud speakers.
  • The kickers practiced onside kicks today, but minus the coverage unit.
  • Vrabel didn't run after practice today, but the WRs, DBs, and DL all stayed on the field after practice for some extra instruction from their position coaches, with the WR spending time catching passes from a throwing machine at close range.
  • There was a period that simulated a game -like situation today, with the O on one sideline and the D on the other.
  • I didn't spend much time with interviews after practice due to personal time constraints, but I have full faith in the other reporters covering the practice to do a good job with those.

Some of your well-timed shots give the impression that there is more contact than there was last year at this time. Is this just because of your mad photog skillz or did you get the same impression from having been there?

Several observers commented that they thought practice was more intense this year, from players and coaches.

definitely, think of it as a rough game of two hand touch. No hitting or tackling, just plenty of firm greetings.

This is the assistant pictured often alongside miller
Wes Satterfield serves as a graduate assistant coach with the Buckeye offensive staff and specialists. He joined the Ohio State football program in March, 2010. Satterfield came to Ohio State from the University of North Carolina, where he spent three seasons on the football staff as a quality control assistant (2007-08) and graduate assistant coach (2009) working with the quarterbacks and receivers.
Satterfield was a four-year starter at quarterback, kicker and punter for Sewanee: The University of the South, earning SCAC conference offensive player of the year honors as a junior. He set a conference single season record for quarterbacks in 2005, scoring 11 rushing touchdowns that season.
A native of Hartsville, Tenn., Satterfield was an all-state quarterback and kicker at Trousdale County High, where his father and previously his grandfather served as head football coach. He earned a bachelor's degree in American history from Sewanee in 2007, and is working toward a master's degree in education administration at Ohio State.

My notes from today's practice:

General

  • The players were in ?shells? today, which means helmet and shoulder pads with shorts (even though the team was wearing hybrid shorts that were a step away from being full gear, look at some pictures).
  • Being in shells meant a lot more running the ball and somewhat more contact on a majority of the plays.
  • The practice was split up into three main sections. A group running drill (DBs and WRs were off on their own), a group passing drill (OL and DL were off on their own), and a team drill which was offense versus defense in a game-like situation.
  • S Jeremy Cash and S Jamie Wood joined DE Solomon Thomas in the yellow limited participation jerseys today, while CB Doran Grant did pushups with them near the end of practice rather than participating in the team drills.
  • Against my natural tenancies, I tried to focus more on the offense today than the defense, so I will share some information on the QBs and RBs that I missed in previous practices.
Defense

  • The starting group remained unchanged from previous practices and the lineup appears set other than the rotations noted below.
  • The competition for the 2nd CB spot continues between Bradley Roby and Dominic Clarke, who split time with the ones throughout practice.
  • Adam Bellamy, Garrett Goebel, and Johnathan Hankins continue to rotate at DT and DE at times, and occupy different spots depending on the look they are in.
  • DC Jim Heacock got on Adam Bellamy multiple times today, which in my mind reinforces how much is expected of him in the DL rotation this season.
  • Nathan Williams and JT Moore continue to rotate at LEO with the 1s.
  • Freshman DL Michael Bennett has apparently worked his way up and was playing DE with the second team all practice, along with fellow freshman Joel Hale who was with the 2nd team at DT.
  • Freshman LB Curtis Grant was more vocal in calling out the pre-snap reads for the 3rd team defense today than in previous practices, but the game clearly hasn?t ?slowed down? for him yet.
  • S Corey Brown got time with the 2nd team defense.
Offense

  • Since there are 4 QBs and 3 offensive teams rotating through, the quarterbacks rotated straight down the line so that each one got a chance to play with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd groups during all of the drills.
  • Carlos Hyde and Jordan Hall split time with the 1s at RB today.
  • Jaamal Berry and Rod Smith split time with the 2s.
  • Boom Herron and various other backs spent time with the 3s.
  • All of the running backs had their moments, and this isn?t breaking news, but the ground game should be very solid this season if the passing game can keep defenses just a little honest.
  • The starting offensive line remained the same as in previous practices.
  • Freshman OL Antonio Underwood was the 2nd team RT today with Tommy Brown playing RT with the 3rd team. Mikes Adams was the 2nd team LT and Chris Carter was the LT with the 3rd team.
  • Philly Brown and Verlon Reed continue to be the starters at WR.
  • The 2nd group of WRs was: Devier Posey and T.Y. Williams on the edge with Chris Fields in the slot.
  • There was a lot of pre-snap motion today on offense, with players in the backfield splitting out wide as the most popular movement.
  • The team spent quite a bit of time on screens today with various players getting the ball, including but not limited to Jordan Hall (split out wide) and Philly Brown on slip screens.
  • During the team running drill, Braxton Miller didn?t receive any reps, instead he was receiving one-on-one coaching on the other field.
Miscellaneous

  • During a screen drill, the team practiced group celebrations in the endzone. This will clearly not be a part of game days, but they had fun with it.
  • The team ran gassers all together at the end of practice, which Chris Carter unsurprisingly struggled mightily with.
  • There was some pretty hard hitting going on today considering that full pads aren?t until tomorrow.
  • WR Coach Stan Drayton continues to run on the field during plays to encourage players to finish strong, today his target was freshman WR Evan Spencer.

Braxton received one on one coaching on the other field. I'm sure I'm being over-analytical, but I suppose that could be a good thing? A little extra-effort in order to help him get ready for the 3rd? I can only hope... :)

It was during a running drill were the other QBs were basically just handing it off, the WRs weren't even there to throw to, although there were a few passes to the tight ends. I actually didn't see what Miller was doing during this time, but I imagine it was extra work in the passing game, possibly with the WRs and DBs, but I didn't see what they were up to either other than not participating in the running drill.

I know Braxton said he had all the running plays down to a T, but needed more work on routes and schematics of the passing plays. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was for that or for footwork and body movement.
