2011 SEC Football Discussion

That has nothing to do with the fact of interference with the Dore to catch the ball. The hit was still illegal, and the piggie tossed. He did NOT however, hit a guy who was fair catching the ball. That gives the pig NO right to jack him before the ball reached him. But it does explain why they disregarded the invalid fair catch sign by not stopping. So Smoov - I give you a small legal point that has no bearing on the hit on a defenseless kid.

I'm not, and haven't, disagreed with any of that.

What I'm saying, and have been saying, is that the National Crucifixion on the kid is unwarranted.

Those hits happen every Saturday. It would literally take me a minute and a half to find a dozen examples of similar plays that went uncalled or unremarked upon.

It was a mistake. The team was penalized and the kid was ejected. It warrants a little commentary perhaps, but not the kind of national outrage that it's gotten.

That's all I'm saying.

Well, that and he needs to move over to the Defense.

The way he was strutting around after the hit and the way he carried on while being escorted off the field did him no favors.

Why don't you go ahead and do that? I disagree strongly that hits that dirty happen on a weekly basis, but then again, I don't watch SEC football as much as you do.

There was no fair catch call.

Returner was shielding his eyes from the sun, pulled his hand down as he took off running.

There was no waving the hand back and forth over his head.

Not even a hint of it.

Seriously?
Do you want the kid to take out a full page advertisement next time?

*edit*
After re-watching, i buy the "no fair catch call' argument and change my judgement to just a good ole cheap shot.

I put this in the LSU-Bama game thread, but it belongs here also.

If Arkansas beats LSU on the day after Thanksgiving, and the 3 teams all end their regular season 11-1, the SEC 3-team tiebreaker is interesting. If they all only have a loss to each other, it falls to #8.

8. The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.

In other words, they go to the BCS standings, but they don't just take the highest-ranked BCS team. If the top 2 of the 3 teams in the BCS standings are within 5 spots of each other, which they certainly would be, then the head-to-head between those two teams decides it.

So if Bama is above LSU in the BCS standings, LSU would get the SEC Championship game bid, even if Alabama was #1 in the BCS, as long as LSU was in the top 6 and ahead of Arkansas. But if Arkansas jumps LSU in the BCS standings by winning in Red Stick, Alabama would win the SEC tiebreaker by the head-to-head with Arkansas. Arkansas could only win the tiebreaker if both LSU and Arkansas finish ahead of Bama in the BCS standings, which I don't think can happen in Bama wins out.

So the rematch might actually be more likely to happen if LSU loses to Arkansas. Because either way, both Oklahoma State and Stanford have to lose to allow for the possibility of the rematch.

more like 3 seconds, he wasn't even close, you can't just blow up a player like that, fair catch or not

and 3 yards, not even close,

Tapdance much?

As for the play, I won't even so far as to call it a cheap shot but rather a very poorly-timed hit. The 15-yard penalty was definitely warranted, but his ejection was not.

The parallels between Nutt's tenure at Mississippi and Arkansas are stunning.

Walked into programs that had recruited well, but hadn't won much in the previous few years.

Immediately has some significant success for two years with previous coach's recruits - Danny Ford at Arkansas and Ed Orgeron at Mississippi.

The wheels start to come off in year three. Graduation, attrition and poor recruiting evaluations mark a significant drop off in talent.

The big difference in what happened next is that Matt Jones showed up and then Darren McFadden showed up behind him. They would have been Razorbacks no matter who the coach was. That saved Nutt's hide for a few years at Arkansas - along with having a strong good ol' boy network that supported him.

Matt Jones and Darren McFadden didn't show up at Mississippi, and he was never a favorite son in Mississippi.

I kind of hate to see him go.

Without looking at an Ole Miss site to see who their candidates are, I could see Mike Leach getting that job. They're in bad enough shape to take a chance on a guy with some baggage.

That would be the best possible choice for Mississippi, but I don't see it happening.

Nutt has left a smoking crater where the Ole Miss football program once was, and surely Leach is too smart to step into that burning shit pile.

The other question is if Houston Nutt will get another coaching gig or is he done?
