2011 Out-of-state players to watch

Sam Webb: Recruiting

It's often a tall order for northern schools to venture down to SEC country and lure away some of that region's most coveted prospects. That said, there are always a few talented youngsters open to defecting.

That appears to be the case with McDonough (Georgia) Union Grove defensive back Avery Walls. Scout.com's No. 25 safety prospect might reside in the South, but he is a northerner at heart.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Walls insists he is quite the hockey player. Despite living in Florida and Georgia the majority of his life, he has sought out opportunities to remain active in the sport. He has also maintained his allegiance as an avid Ohio State fan. That would seemingly give the Buckeyes a advantage in this recruitment, but Walls' boyhood favorite hasn't extended him a scholarship. Could that be a mistake on coach Jim Tressel's part? Thirty-one other schools, including both Michigan and Michigan State, certainly believe so.

"When coaches see me they say, 'He is not one of those big 6-2 safeties -- he is 5-11, 190, but he loves to hit,'" Walls said. "I grew up playing hockey, so I love contact. But I'm also fast. I ran a 10.65 100 meter, and we had the state champion 4x100 team than ran 42.39. So I can play corner or safety.

"A good thing about Michigan is they have a lot of their alumni coming back. When I was there in the weight room I saw Larry Foote. One thing that I know about Michigan is that they are pretty much like a family. Coach Rod (Rich Rodriguez) greeted my mom with affection. He did not give her a handshake -- he gave her a hug when she first came by. I think it was a really great visit."

The warm greeting may have gone a long way toward melting his mother's playfully chilly reception to anything Michigan. She happens to be an Ohio State alum.

"You know I had to put my special socks on," Yvonne Sebastian said. "I had my Ohio State socks on to hold me steady (laughter). Me and Avery kid about the whole experience and we're trying to keep it fun because sometimes it gets a little stressful."

DeKalb senior defensive lineman Tyrel Williams credits coach Justin Keck, his family and his teammates for being positive influences in his athletic endeavors. Williams and the Barbs have set a goal to reach the postseason this year and Williams hopes to continue playing football in college next year. (Rob Winner ? [email protected])

Eventually, I?d like to play college football. I watch all the games and am a fan of college football. I?d like to go to Ohio State, but I will play hard for any college that takes a look at me.

Any indication of feelings with Walker, internally?

I'd say it could be a reaction to Walker or Story, although I still think Walker is an OSU lock...maybe they are thinking it might be a nice insurance policy to have another tackle waiting in the wings just in case things don't work out with Walker, Grant, Jennings, Haynes or Story. I don't think we can make too much of a big deal about this yet. Let's see if A) he visits and B) he is offered.

There was some late chatter about Simmons and OSU...

McKeesport's Simmons doesn't want to attend North Carolina

McKeesport High School defensive lineman Delvon Simmons signed with the North Carolina Tar Heels last month, but he would like the marriage annulled.

McKeesport coach Jim Ward told Rivals.com today that Simmons has asked for his release from the letter of intent. Ward said he hasn't heard yet from North Carolina whether it will release Simmons.

It's just another chapter in a strange recruiting story. Simmons' choice of North Carolina was a surprise to many. Although he made an unofficial visit to the school last summer, he never made an official visit to the college. North Carolina coach Butch Davis never made a home visit with Simmons, either, because he didn't think Simmons had that much of an interest in North Carolina, even up to a week or two before signing date.

Stay tuned on this one.

More on Simmons and North Carolina

University of North Carolina football coach Butch Davis and three of his assistant coaches came to McKeesport last Friday and met with recruit Delvon Simmons and McKeesport coach Jim Ward, but Simmons still doesn't want to play for the Tar Heels.

Ward said today that despite the meeting with North Carolina's coaches, Simmons (pictured) still asked to be released from the letter of intent he signed with North Carolina Feb. 2.Ward said North Carolina told Simmons it would release him to a certain list of schools, but "we have not heard back from North Carolina yet," Ward said.
