Bourbon, Bow Ties and Baseball Hats
BP Recruiting Team
As some of you know, this is the first season of the Collegiate Premier League (CPL). The #29 Buckeyes played in the first ever CPL game last weekend at #15 US Naval Academy. Came out flat and got down 25-7 at the half but stormed back only to drop a tough one in the end, 44-31. The team showed a lot of heart with their second half performance and the coaching staff is very optimistic moving forward with the starting XV. We desperately need some younger guys to step up to provide some depth moving forward.

The Buckeyes have their first ever home CPL match this weekend at 7PM at the turf field just outside the south stands of The Show. The #18 University Delaware Blue Hens lost at home last weekend 15-5 to Dartmouth and will travel with one side to Columbus this weekend. More info can be found here...

Ohio State Rugby vs. Delaware

Tough day against Delaware. I just saw the CPL box scores. Better luck next week, Bucks!

We played beyond undisciplined. I've never been more disappointed by a team I've coached, in any sport. The ref was awful but we made it easy for him. In total we had:

30+ penalties
5 short arms on scrums
1 yellow card for continually not rolling away
1 elbow that led to a UD retaliation (and subsequent yellow card)
1 suspicious tackle that USA has emailed us about
1 punch that the ref missed that USA has emailed us about
1 attempted trip tackle that probably should have been carded

I am still sick to my stomach. Wishing I hadn't given up brown liquor for Lent because I would have blacked out Saturday night after this debacle. Back to the drawing board...

Two questions:

1) What makes a tackle "suspicious"?
2) What do you mean by "USA has emailed us about"? What body is that?

1) The person who reviews our game films said our flanker made a "suspicious" tackle on UD's scrumhalf which effectively took him out of the game. He said the film was inconclusive as to whether or not our flanker made any attempt to wrap. A moment later our flanker was supposedly seen dropping an elbow on UD's tighthead which caused the tighthead to retaliate and he was carded. I am watching the film tonight so I couldn't really comment at this point but it's not inconceivable that all of this is accurate, knowing who's involved.

Our 7 is a heck of a player and I suspect this was just out of frustration but the point is there is always someone watching in the CPL with every game being filmed and reviewed.

2) The email came from the National Panel Manager for USA Rugby's referees.

Several types of tackling are illegal in rugby union that might not seem all that problematic in American football, but are when you consider the guys play without any real pads or helmets..

You can't tackle a player by taking him off his feet, bringing his feet above parallel, and then "spearing" him head/upperbody first into the ground.

High tackles that target the head/neck are illegal.

You cannot tackle a player without the ball. Tackling a player who has released the ball is called a "late tackle" and is penalized.

A "shoulder charge" is when the tackler leads with his shoulder without attempting to wrap his arms around the ball-carrier to take him down. You must wrap your arms around the player being tackled.

Sounds like the person reviewing the game film thinks that a Buckeye is guilty of a shoulder charge.

I appreciate you elaborating, but funny enough, my question is even more elementary. Essentially, I was asking in what form are tackles illegal. Is there a particular form or manner in which it has to be done in rugby?

Is that the same body that governs all of rugby in the States?

Read Steve's post above...spearing, dump tackles and high tackles around the head are all not allowed. From a technique standpoint, the biggest difference in rugby is we teach to tackle with our head behind the ball so as to limit neck and head injuries. This is one of the biggest changes for former football players who are new to our sport. They are used to tackling either straight on or getting their head and shoulder in front of the ball carrier.

USA Rugby is the governing body for rugby here in the US. OSU is also a part of the Midwest Territory and the Ohio Rugby Union. So you essentially have three entities that you answer to...but USA Rugby has total control of the Collegiate Premier League, which we are a part of (as are 31 other top teams across the country). The Midwest and ORU have nothing to do with that.

You aren't allowed to simply make yourself a bullet like a defensive back. You can, however, hit as hard as you like with your shoulder/upper arms provided that you at least make an actual attempt to wrap up in the tackle. In practice, having to wrap up takes a lot of the velocity/impact out of the tackle and makes it safer for both players. Of course, if you're wrapped up and slung to the ground, it doesn't feel very good.

I like the filming and review of each match in the CPL.

In closing, perhaps you should refrain from screening "Slapshot" in pre-match film sessions, Coach.
