Behind the Numbers
The average score for the last 15 games with Indiana is 34.2 to 10.1. The average score for the home games is 36.1 to 8.1. The odds are fairly even that both of those ratios will become even more one-sided on Saturday.

The Buckeyes are on a roll, both offensively and defensively. The Silver Bullets took a distinct step forward against the Badgers, but the offense stole the show. While the Ohio State offense has been below average for much of the year, their performance last Saturday night was inspired.

Although Braxton Miller and his supporting cast typically score only 95.6% as many points as their opponents typically allow, they scored 232.9% as many points as Wisconsin typically gives up. To put that in perspective, Houston leads the nation in Differential Scoring Offense (DSO), scoring 184.8% as many points as opponents usually surrender. For the Buckeyes to best that number, for even one game, is not just a step forward, but is a remarkable feat. Now they must prove that it was the start of something special and not just a flash-in-the-pan.

The defense also had a good night. Even after giving up 149 yards in the last 3:48 of the game, the Buckeyes still held the Badgers to just 69.1% of their usual yardage production. Wisconsin gained 52 fewer yards against Ohio State than against anyone else they've played. As for points, those last 15 really hurt. Though it was still the lowest point total the Badgers have produced all year, it ended up hurting Ohio State's Differential Scoring Defense (DSD). It was a bad week for DSD for the Buckeyes, as every one of their 2011 opponents (those that they've already played anyway) scored less than their season average. This caused the Silver Bullets to fall from 9th to 13th in DSD, nationally.

Breakdowns like the ones that allowed the last 15 points against the Badgers have been disturbingly common for the Buckeyes this year. It will be interesting to see if the they can work on shoring that up against the Hoosiers.

Speaking of whom, the Hoosiers offense also had their best differential performance of the conference season last week. Indiana cranked out 18.1% more points and 11.6% yards than Northwestern usually gives up; so they've got that going for them, which is nice. Unfortunately, producing your season best differential numbers against your worst opponent, which Indiana just did, means the opposite of posting your best differential numbers against your best opponent, which Ohio State just did. Bottom line: If the Silver Bullets can avoid break-downs, this will be an epic beat down.

Of course beat downs are borne not just of defensive dominance but also require a modicum (or more) of offense. This is where the newfound confidence, not to mention production, of the Ohio State offense comes in. It is also where the almost Indiana's defensive vulnerability comes into play. "Vulnerability" may not be the right word, but perhaps finding the right word is best left to the members of the preview team who don't specialize in numbers. To put it bluntly, Indiana's defense is bad even by Bloomington's standards.

All of Indiana's conference opponents put up more yards against Indiana than against any other Big Ten foe. The only conference team that did not put up conference-season-high points against the Hoosiers was Penn State, who managed only 16 points from their 464 yards of offense.

In case you are wondering if only Big Ten teams were included so as to make this look worse for the Hoosiers, consider North Texas. Only once in five tries has one of their Sun Belt Brethern allowed them more total yards than they produced against Indiana. Then there is South Carolina St., who has played 7 other FCS teams and has been held to fewer yards than they gained against Indiana by 5 of those 7. Yes, Indiana really is that bad.

But wait, there's more. Unlike the Ohio State offense, the Silver Bullets and the Indiana Offense who all just had arguably their best day, differentially speaking; the Hoosier defense just had their worst day. Hold on, here is where it gets weird.

Bad is as Bad as Good is Good

Against the Wildcats the Hoosiers allowed 232.9% of the points that Northwestern typically scores. Does that number sound familiar? It is the same number that Ohio State's offense put up against Wisconsin. That is a remarkably good number on offense, but it is almost unbelievably bad on defense. As if that weren't bad enough, the Hoosier defense allowed 153.9% as many yards as the Wildcats usually gain. To put that in perspective, Memphis has the worst Differential Total Defense in the country at 1.360 (they allow 136% as many yards as opponents typically gain). To say that Indiana's defense is going in the wrong direction at the worst possible time (for them) is an understatement worthy of post-game coachspeak.

Differential Prediction

Taking all these differential numbers and combining them with traditional stats can give us a set of predictions for yards and points for each team. These predictions don't take into account that the teams appear to be headed in different directions, but we will offer them unembellished nevertheless.

__________________Points__________Yards
Ohio St._______36.4 to 38.3_____385 to 402
Indiana________13.4 to 14.9_________282

Recalling the average score that these teams have produced over the last 15 years, one wonders if one of the worst offenses to inhabit Bloomington in all that time can really produce 13 to 15 points against the Silver Bullets. Time will tell.
The Lighter Side
We at The Lighter Side would like to state that we don't promote either drinking or gambling.

Yeah, we'd like to say that, but that would be hypocritical BS. Few things in life are more conducive to drinking and gambling that watching football, and we simply watch a helluva lot of football. OK, now that the joke of a disclaimer has in itself been disclaimed, let's move on to why we're talking about drinking and gambling.

Because we want you to be able to win drinks by making bar bets! Yes, sports fans, it's once again time for odd facts that can win you drinks from others at the bar, assuming you can remember these things while you're drinking. OK, you won't be able to remember these from now until Saturday, when you're in the bar, so just try to remember them after you head to the men's room to access BP on your smartphone.

First question: Which 3 current B1G teams have an all-time winning record against Oklahoma in football? Bet somebody a beer that they won't get it in 10 guesses.

Unexpected, but actual answer: Illinois, Indiana, and Northwestern. Ohio State is 1-1 against the Sooners.

Second question: Every member of the Big Ten football conference, including brand new and former members, has scored 50 or more points at least once in a football game against Indiana. Which Big Ten team has scored 50+ points the most times when playing Indiana in football? Bet them a beer they won't get it right with 5 guesses.

Unexpected, but actual answer: Purdue has done it 9 times (they enjoy kicking them in the Old Oaken Bucket). TSUN and Wiscy have done it 7 times, tOSU only 3.

Third question: Indiana has scored 50 points or more a total of 8 times against current Big Ten teams. Which B1G team has Indiana scored 50+ points against the most times? Bet them a beer they won't get it in 5 guesses (assuming you know they don't read the BP preview, that is).

Unexpected, but actual answer: Nebraska - IU scored exactly 54 points in 1943, '44, and '45 games against the Huskers. The Hoosiers have managed it once each against Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin.

Fourth question: Which Buckeye in uniform this Saturday will enter the game with the most career receptions among active tOSU football players? (the question rules out Posey) - Let's only give 2 guesses this time.

Surprising answer: Boom Herron, with 36 catches. Stoneburner has 35, Boren has 17, Fragel has 13, and Jordan Hall 11. Devin Smith's 10 is the most among WRs.

OK, that's enough free beer for you, in case you need to drive home after the game. Please remember to tip your waitress, and we'll be here next week.
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
Historically, IU viewed football season as a way to pass time until basketball season arrives. But coach Terry Hoeppner arrived at IU in 2005 with much enthusiasm, drive and hope. After he passed away in mid-2007, that season Hoosiers achieved his oft-stated goal, and played in a 13th game when they went to the Insight Bowl against Oklahoma State. New coach Kevin Wilson is trying to follow his lead in continuing to improve the dormant Hoosier football program.

While traditions are severely lacking I think Hoeppner said it best as he tried to implement new traditions, "Clearly this is a 'new to you' tradition versus a 'new' tradition. There are maybe sixty plus schools that do the exact same walk. Who said that Hoosiers football isn't catching up to the pack?!"

Here are a few traditions that have been in place:

IU began playing football in 1884. Built in 1960, the 52,929-seat, open-air Memorial Stadium is home to the IU Hoosiers football team. There have been many renovations since the original construction, including the replacement of wooden seats with aluminum, installation of sound and lighting systems, and laying of FieldTurf in 2008. Renovations completed in the summer of 2009 include the enclosure of the north endzone of Memorial Stadium, and a huge weight room.

Hoeppner renamed the football stadium "The Rock".

Indiana has a tradition of snagging coaches from Miami University (OH). Kevin Wilson was there with Randy Walker back in the late 1990s, and followed him to Northwestern before spending the last several years at Oklahoma.

Hoeppner was the third former MU coach to eventually stroll the Hoosier sidelines. John Pont was a three-time first team All-MAC halfback at Miami from 1947-50 before moving onto an illustrious 28-year head coaching career that included stops at his alma mater (1956-62) and Indiana (1965-72). He directed Miami to three league titles and the 1962 Tangerine Bowl before earning 1967 National Coach of the Year honors for leading the Hoosiers to the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl. Bill Mallory was a two-time all-league end at Miami in 1955-56 before embarking on a 27-year coaching career that included stops at Miami (1969-73) and Indiana (1984-96). He led Miami to the 1973 MAC and Tangerine Bowl titles, and he is the winningest coach in Indiana history. He directed the Hoosiers to six bowl games in eight seasons.

Two hours before kickoff, players line up and participate in "The Walk" from the west side of Assembly Hall to the east side of Memorial Stadium. Students and IU supporters form a gauntlet along the path and watch the Hoosiers enter the stadium. Hoeppner brought the idea with him from Miami of Ohio. "This is our symbolic march into the stadium," Hoeppner said in a statement released by the media relations department. "It's a tremendous opportunity for the fans, as well as the coaches' and players' families, to see the players and coaches before the game. The players love it. It's very motivating for them."

A three-ton remnant from the original stadium construction was placed near the north end zone, the IU coaches now challenge the Hoosiers to "defend the rock".

One of the oldest and most prestigious football trophies in the nation, the Old Oaken Bucket, goes annually to the winner of the Purdue-Indiana football battle. While the presentation of the trophy dates back over 75 years, the bucket itself is more than 100 years old. The bucket was found, in a bad state of repair and covered with moss and mold, on the old Bruner farm between Kent and Hanover in Southern Indiana, after the Chicago alumni groups of both Purdue and Indiana enthusiastically decided in 1925 that a traditional trophy for the winner of the gridiron clash would be appropriate. Russell Gray of Purdue and Dr. Clarence Jones of Indiana were given the task of finding a suitable trophy. They recommended that "an old oaken bucket would be a most typical trophy from this state and should be taken from a well somewhere in Indiana." Purdue's Fritz Ernst and Whiley J. Huddle of Indiana found the historical bucket and it is said that General Morgan's command used it during a jaunt through Indiana during the Civil War. It has had a no less exciting history since 1935, several times having been kidnapped by partisans from both schools - a couple of times missing so long that it was given up as lost, only to turn up mysteriously just before or after the annual game. The bucket was presented as a prize by the late George Ade, distinguished humorist from Purdue, and the late Harry Kurrie, then president of the Monon Railroad, representing Indiana.

The Old Brass Spittoon is presented to the winner of the IU-Michigan State football game. First presented in 1950, it was Michigan State's idea to start up the trophy and Indiana quickly accepted. It's believed that the spittoon has been around since both universities were established.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the coaches and players join The Marching Hundred band to sing the school fight song after every home victory. The lyrics to "Indiana, Our Indiana" were written by IU band director Russell P. Harker to the tune of "The Viking March" by Karl King, conductor of the Barnum and Bailey Circus Band. The song was first performed by the IU band at the Northwestern game in 1912.

Indiana, Our Indiana,
Indiana, we're all for you!
We will fight for the cream and crimson,
For the glory of old IU
Never daunted, we cannot falter
In the battle, we're tried and true
Indiana, Our Indiana,
Indiana, we're all for you!
