2011 ESPNU Signing Day Special

Setting the ESPN rankings and talking heads aside, there has been a lot of interesting comments in this show from Urban Meyer and Randy Shannon.

Just a couple off the top of my head...

Urban saying there are some coaches out there, "especially the defensive minded ones like Nick Saban and Randy Shannon", that when they offer a prospect he would almost automatically jump in and go after the guy.

Urban mentioned that the best high school prospect he had ever seen was Percy Harvin. He watched three plays and said he had seen enough and moved on.

Randy said he thinks it's important to get an early start with the prospects so you have enough time to decide if the guy has the type of character you want. I think he even referenced Urban's first recruiting class where only 11 of the 18 kids were still around in the end, if I remember correctly.

It's not necessarily new thoughts but it's interesting to hear it directly from them.

Listening to those coaches telling their stories is great Finally, ESPN bringing in some true experts. Meyer's talking about recruiting corners was great. He said, he'd want a kid that can play corner be able to play also, as a kick returner,wr,rb or qb during the games. He said, if the kid can only play corner and is known as a top player that he would be lucky to have the ball come his way only a few times during a game so, he could be a hit or miss corner.

Shannon also talked about the battles in Florida, saying the team that got the best defensive linemen were the ones who come out ahead. I guess I liked that because to me football starts upfront. You can have great backs and DBs but if your line stinks you're going to struggle.

Give me a dominant line on both sides of the ball, first and foremost, every time. Whatever I put behind it will always look better.

Once Urban "de-gatorizes" a bit he will be a pretty good analyst. It seems to be hard to do, as he caught himself saying "we"...I mean the Gators" a time or two. Glad to see him be able to hang around the game he loves, but have it not take too much time out of his year. I bet Shelley is happy to get him out of the house a bit despite all of the "more family time" thing. Going from 80 hour weeks to a 35 hour week would be just fine. I never thought he would become Mr. Mom.

Urban's performance is gonna disappoint a few guys today.

In ten years when he's picking fights with Florida's quarterback over half a season's worth of broadcasts of College GameDay 3D, you'll remember these days before de-gatorization a little more fondly.

They just showed a graph of the midwest showing the number of ESPN 150 players in each state and the numbers were obviously low. They were saying how bad it was and yada yada. Urban noted that he was shocked to see so few elite recruits in the midwest in the ESPN 150 and said it was alarming because he's from Ohio and the highschool talent in the area was always good.

Note to Urban: You work for ESPN now. Football in the midwest is dead. SouthEastCorner of the country is now head and shoulders above everyone else.

ESPN is ESPN, but the demographics of the midwest versus the southeast have changed the 30 years with the migration from the Rust Belt. It stands to reason the number of top 150 guys in one area versus the other would shift with the population.

The last two years the only blue-chip recruits from the Midwest are the kids considering their southern schools.

Of course there's a shift and an advantage down there. But they pretend like Ohio is devoid of elite talent most years. Rivals does the same thing.

But hey, it's good business to keep the self-sustaining cycle going.

Wisconsin just has a bunch of magicians at their school to transform duds into studs.

I thought Urban made a good point re: Nebraska. The Huskers have recruited California and Texas over the years when they've won. With the move to the Big Ten, will it be tougher for them to go into those areas?

I think it definitely is an issue - how many California kids do you see playing in the Big Ten? Not that it never happens but it is rare. Our out of state kids tend to come from PA, FL and GA. Few come from Texas and California.

Pelini will be recruiting Ohio harder than ever now, but I'm sure JT is well aware of it. :)

They mentioned Virginia Tech as an example of a school you never see in the top ten recruiting rankings yet they keep winning, but Wisconsin is a prime example.

I bet Urban is having a better day on TV than this guy:

FIFY.
And not your fault really. There are alot of posters on BP who live in Georgia now. I'd be shocked if they didn't all nod their head in agreement when I suggest that recruiting Atlanta is a whole different ballgame than recruiting the rest of Georgia.
