...In the end, this doesn?t really matter. If Rodriguez turns the program around and starts winning, this will be seen as a tough patch everyone had to get through on the road to success. If the team goes 6-6 this year, the violations could be seen as the official beginning of the end of the failed experiment, and they can be used as an excuse to finally bring the marriage of Michigan and Les Miles together.

"We did not get any advice or any direction that led us to believe that was a necessary kind of punishment," Brandon said. "We clearly did not break any rules that created an unfair competitive advantage. We did not get involved in anything like academic fraud or gambling that would have warranted that type of punishment."

So its ok that you have been cheating all this time b/c you are not relevant in the college football world right now? But once you are relevant again, you are going to all of a sudden stop and do things the right way, w/o breaking NCAA violations? RIGHT

GO BUCKS!!!!!!

Michigan's response: University officials estimated the program exceeded the CARA (countable athletically related activities) in 2008 and 2009 by 65 hours. It has self-imposed reduction in practice and training times on a 2:1 basis, totaling 130 hours the next two years.
"We matched up to the extent we had overages in the summer, we've multiplied by two," Brandon said, adding the same formula that has been applied to fall and winter workouts. "We've proportionally penalized ourselves according to the part of the year we ... (had) overages."

Hmmm.... They were over by 65 hours and they are cutting by 130 hours which means they go from over 65 to under 65, for a net of zero hours over four years. Wow that's an impressive self-penalty.

Cases that could affect U-M verdict

SAN DIEGO STATEThe case most similar to U-M's was decided in 2003. The infractions committee ruled that a San Diego State assistant coach had conducted improper mandatory workouts with offensive linemen over four summers; that attendance was kept; that at least one practice was videotaped; and that one year coaches conducted impermissible athletic activities before spring practice started.
The NCAA characterized the violations as major because they were not isolated or inadvertent.
San Diego State self-imposed a series of penalties: forfeiture of six scholarships over three years, loss of 21 practice days over a three-year period, reduction in off-campus recruiting and individual penalties for the assistant in question.
The infractions committee -- which included Gene Marsh, now an outside counsel for U-M -- added two years of probation. The school appealed the penalty, but the Infractions Appeals Committee -- a five-member board -- upheld it.

So, about 11' 2" and 320 lbs per year?

Well hold on a second, this could be more serious than it looks on the surface.

scUM win total the past 2 years=8
scUM total scholarships (85x2)=170
Wins per Scholarship=.0471

Taking away 2 scholarships a year is .1884 of a win a year and .5652 of a win for 3 years.

When you are only winning 4 games a year, giving away 20% of a win is a BFD in my opinion.:wink2:
