Iowa overtime hero and '3-FGs-in-the-Rose-Bowl' kicker Devin Barclay returns, and Ben Buchanan will likely assume the punting duties.

The coverage units will look to improve their performance in the Rose Bowl.

Barclay appears pretty accurate, but I have to wonder about his leg strength. I wonder what his range is??

As for Buchanan, I've heard that the kid has a huge leg. It would certainly be nice to have a weapon at punter once again.

I think the real question on ST next season will be whether or not JT can find a difference maker at returner. It will interesting to see who emerges there.

I would certainly hope so... :smash:

His 39-yard game winner against Iowa had plenty to spare. His being a former MLS player would lead me to believe he's got the leg to hit from 50...

One thing that concerned me was his kickoffs. It was great having Pettrey kicking it into the endzone all the time, and we missed that with Barclay. I wonder if Ben could take over there? Do punts and kickoffs, and Barclay do FG's?

This is what will likely happen, imo.

OHIO STATE

Kicker: Aaron Pettrey departs, but Devin Barclay, whose kick against Iowa sent Ohio State to the Rose Bowl, will be back.

Punter: Jon Thoma departs after finishing 10th in the league in average (37.9 ypp) last fall. Sophomore Ben Buchanan has a big leg and will step in.
Kick return: Primary return men Lamaar Thomas and Ray Small both depart. Ohio State ranked sixth in the league last fall (22.3 ypr).

Punt return: Small leaves a pretty big void here after averaging 8.3 yards on a league-high 33 attempts last season.

Quick thoughts
: Jim Tressel's teams always will be strong in the kicking game, although there are some key spots to fill in 2010. Barclay did a really nice job in relief of Pettrey last fall, but whether he can provide the same long-range threat as Pettrey remains to be seen. Small is a big loss on both return teams, and it will be interesting to see who steps into his spot. Running back Brandon Saine and wideout DeVier Posey both are possibilities. Ohio State covered punts well last fall but finished a surprising 51st nationally in kickoff coverage (21.2 ypr) with a touchdown allowed against Iowa.

-- Seven players were working at punt return, which is a spot of interest this spring with Ray Small gone: WRs DeVier Posey, Dane Sanzenbacher, James Jackson, Chris Fields, Grant Schwartz, Washington and RB Jordan Hall

This would be very un-Tressel like, but I would not be shocked to see a freshman end up as the primary guy in the fall. Very rarely do I ever project freshmen into the two-deep, but if someone shows something in August, it just might happen.

Special teams have work to do. There are only two times a year where special teams are on full display at Ohio State: the spring and fall kick scrimmages. The specialists spend all off-season gearing up for these days, and if Saturday?s performance was an indication of what the Buckeyes are going to be like on special teams in 2010, Jim Tressel won?t be sleeping well tonight. The three kickers were a combined 17-of-33 (52 percent) on their field goal tries, including 4-of-16 (25 percent) from 40 yards or more. The punting was shaky, the fakes were bland, they had a punt blocked in the end zone, the opening kickoff was fumbled and Dane Sanzenbacher put two punt returns on the ground. On a day that was supposed to highlight the special teams, there were some serious issues brought to light.

2. Ben Buchanan is the punter. They were still calling it a competition for the punter job Saturday between Buchanan and walk-on Derek Erwin, but let?s be real about this; Buchanan is the guy. Let?s forget the fact Erwin did nothing to impress me, and I really do mean nothing, but they?ve been grooming Buchanan for this exact situation since he got to Ohio State. He still isn?t as consistent as Tressel would like, but who are we kidding, neither was Jon Thoma. Buchanan has a better leg than Thoma and he?s only a redshirt sophomore.

3. Devin Barclay should be the field goal kicker inside 40. After Aaron Pettrey went down with a knee injury last season, Barclay came on and went 7-of-10 kicking field goals. He was 7-of-8 from inside of 40 and 0-of-2 from outside. During Saturday?s kick scrimmage, Barclay was deadly accurate from 39 and in, hitting 7-of-8 from inside the 40. As soon as he stepped outside that range, however, things fell apart. He connected on a 45-yard attempt, but missed?usually short?on his other six attempts from outside the 40.

Special teams

Hazell said he is trying to hash out who will return punts and kicks this year. While he said Brandon Saine, Daniel "Boom" Herron and Devon Torrence are the top three in kickoff returns, punt returns is a more murky situation.

"We've got about five guys, and we're trying to figure out who is the best guy back there," Hazell said. "Jordan Hall is back there, and I really like him. He's a guy who can get you 20 yards. DeVier can go the distance, and Dane is pretty solid back there.

"It'll be interesting."
