2010 tOSU Linebacker Discussion

Kinda seems like Sweat will always get the job done but doesn't have any game changing plays (good or bad)

Not being a di** but what do you base this on?

How about the fact that in his career he has one interception and no sacks?

My point is that he seems to be a true football player that does the little things right. He is not flashy and doesn't seem to blow assignments. He just gets the job done.

Um, you might want to check your stats.(Int vs Toledo last year, Sack vs. Illinois)

He's barely even played. What do you expect?

yeah, it's tough to make int's and sacks, when your a freshman on a loaded team, then blow your knee out as a sophomore. Obviously the kid is a the real deal if he overtook Bino. Lets let the kid play before the judgment is made on him.

Bino had six tackles in thirteen games as a freshman and six tackles and half a sack in thirteen games last year.

Sweat had more tackles (15) in half a season (7 games) last year than Sabino had in two full seasons (26 games)... so what are you trying to get at again?

Brian Rolle is never at a loss for words, Ross Homan is the quiet type

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If Ohio State linebackers Brian Rolle and Ross Homan are invited to, say, a dinner party, rest assured the conversation is going to flow.

That is, as long as Rolle shows up.

"If there is one person standing out here, he'll still be talking to him," said linebackers coach Luke Fickell, nodding at Rolle, who was surrounded by reporters after a recent practice. "And as you guys are walking off, he might be going with you to the parking lot, talking some more."

Put Rolle and Homan together, and they're like the Penn and Teller of the OSU defense. Penn Jillette does all the talking for that comedy/magic duo while a mute Teller does most of the tricks.

"That's kind of how I am, a quiet guy," Homan said.

Linebacker moves? The linebackers aren't doing much better. Starting weakside linebacker Ross Homan will miss his second game with a foot injury, though Tressel said Homan is starting to run again after only running in a pool last week. Backup linebacker Dorian Bell will be sidelined for the third straight game after suffering a concussion against Indiana.

Could that change the status of Etienne Sabino? The Buckeyes planned to redshirt the third-year player this season after he lost the battle for the starting strongside job to Andrew Sweat in the preseason. But with Sweat replacing Homan on the weakside, senior cornerback Chimdi Chekwa told reporters on Tuesday he was surprised to see Sabino's name on a depth chart this week.

With second-string linebacker Storm Klein also battling injuries, the Buckeyes could be facing a tough call on whether to put Sabino into the lineup and use up a year of eligibility on just four regular-season games and the bowl. That would make him a senior next year.

But a team source on Tuesday night did not confirm that Sabino would be forced into action, saying Jonathan Newsome would continue to be the team's strongside linebacker while Homan is out.

Regular Season Review: Linebackers

from TheBuckeyeBattleCry.com

Strong linebacker play has been a trademark of Ohio State football for decades. While another school may have been given the title ?Linebacker U?, few teams have matched the consistent excellence Buckeyes have brought to the position.

At the start of the season, Ohio State had two sure things at linebacker in Ross Homan and Brian Rolle, and one pretty big question mark on the strong side. Given recent history at the position and the talent waiting in the wings, however, there was little question that the Buckeyes would successfully fill the void.

...

In general, the production at linebacker in 2010 has gone down from last season.

While some might view that as disappointing, in context it makes sense given the increased production from pseudo-linebackers Nathan Williams and Jermale Hines (more on them in a future review) as well as some injury issues throughout the year.
