I gotta tell you that I am amazed that kids of this calibre still choose to go to Notre Dame.
I don't really follow recruiting closely, but my understanding is that kids that choose Notre Dame have their "caliber" elevated by the folks that pick the players for this game.

Yes and no. They still are getting great talent, but these games exaggerate the class as a whole. Almost every ND kid getting into an All-Star game is excessive. Regardless, I am hoping this is televised, there are quite a few players I would like to see, namely Tanner and Farris...I haven't seen either play that much.

West wins offensive battle in Offense-Defense All-American Bowl

By Ryan Elswick

MYRTLE BEACH -- Cordale Jones passed for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for another score Friday as the West team topped the East 35-21 in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Jones, a 6-5, 225-pounder from Glenville (Ohio) who is still undecided on where he will play in college, was 7-for-10 passing with scoring strikes to South Carolina-bound receiver Shamier Jeffery (Calhoun County) and Stanford commitment Ty Montgomery (St. Mark's, Texas).

As solid as Jones was, offensive MVP honors went to East quarterback Vad Lee, who was a late addition to the roster after O-D officials learned heralded quarterback Christian LeMay (Butler High, N.C.) would be ineligible to play because he had already participated in a practice at Georgia.

Sounds like DerJuan Gambrell and Chase Farris had great games.

I'm happy some of these other commits got to play in a allstar game with talent from every state, even though it isn't the big 2 out there. It's still nice seeing them still play quality talent and seeing how they stack up against them.

Quick thoughts...

  • Nick Vannett stood out immediately. Vannett not only is an athletic receiving target but took pride in his blocking.
  • Pee Wee Gambrell is a very impressive athlete with a very intriguing frame...could be a Cie Grant type down the road. Kid did not shy away from contact at all and was headhunting often. Scoop and score TD.
  • Kenny Hayes is a violent football player. He will be a good one. The East OL was dominated all game long.
  • Chase Farris...see above.
  • Tommy Brown had some good moments and some eh...moments. In all fairness, OL in all-star games is a worthless evaluation. He played RT but I see him inside.
  • Ronald Tanner and Jeremy Cash both looked good physically but didn't see much action. Tanner had a pick but honestly neither stood out due to lack of action.

Players who had Buckeye interest

  • Cordale Jones had a good game. He was better than I expected. Showed a solid arm and savvy mobility. Also, even though it was a little thing, I liked how he carried out his fakes...small detail that is easily and often lost in an all-star game.
  • Kris Harley...looked undersized but I loved him. Kid plays with a nasty edge and a relentless motor. He will be a good one.
  • Shane Wynn is even smaller than I thought he would be but dang he is lightning in a bottle. He made some very impressive plays on special teams and also had a key downfield 'sustained' block to allow a TD run. Solid game.
  • Kent Turene is not 6'3 and is probably 240ish...and brings it. He knocked a SEC-bound OL about 3 yards backwards into the FB who then knocked over the RB. Not sure if he ends up at LB, but that thick and that explosive is a dangerous combo.
  • Eilar Hardy...I loved his film and I loved him in person. He was headhunting from his SS position.
  • Jarrett Grace will be a good one for ND. Kid is relentless and has a nose for the ball. I was very impressed with him...and that frame has monster written all over it.
  • Ray Hamilton will do well at Iowa...but he needs S&C first. Definitely a different effort on passing plays as compared to run plays.
