Teams in BOLD were ranked last week.

Kudos to BP for dropping LSU in spite of the ugly win over the suspension depleted Tarheels.

How did USC drop out this week after being ranked last week despite not being on like 3/4 of the ballots???
Another guess: Less voters this time around than the preseason poll had. The voters in week 1 may have a higher incidence of people who won't rank USC (for probation reason or merit reasons).

Giving up over 500 yards and over 30 points to Hawaii might have something to do with it. I didn't rank them either week, so I'm just guessing.

Probably a little of both I guess. I had them and BYU at the bottom of the list this week. Not enamored by Notre Dame or South Carolina yet.

I'm one of those Kool-Aid drinkers I suppose, since I had them ranked #3. This time of year, I try to strike a balance between how good I think a team is on paper, and the quality of their early resume. At this point, nobody has a more impressive win (in terms of the quality of their opponent) than Boise State does. I think that deserves to be reflected in the rankings, at least for this week. On my ballot at least, it's only temporary and their schedule will cause them to drop no matter how they perform against those teams.

I had posted my ballot for this week in the preseason poll thread, but here it is again in its proper spot:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Boise State - I have to give them their due. This is a good team that is well-coached. To me, their spot in the poll right now is a separate question from whether or not they should be considered for a berth in the NC game down the road. I'll add that with their schedule after Sept. 25, I fully expect to move them down on the list as other teams with tougher conference schedules prove themselves.
  4. Iowa
  5. Wisconsin
  6. Texas Christian - Nice win in Week 1, see also Boise State.
  7. Texas - Thought it would be more of a reload than a rebuild. They sure didn't play like it though against Rice
  8. Nebraska
  9. Florida - Played like ass. This is being generous.
  10. Miami (FL)
  11. Oregon
  12. Virginia Tech - This is a good team (for the ACC). However it is apparently run by imbeciles. I have a hard time punishing a team too hard that barely lost to a top-10 team. The conference slate should take care of that for these guys anyway.
  13. Georgia
  14. Florida State
  15. Penn State
  16. Auburn
  17. Georgia Tech
  18. Arkansas
  19. Oklahoma - I can't believe I still have these guys ranked. The more I think about it, the more I think I should have dropped them out altogether. UTAH STATE. I guess that's what happens when you take three of the top four picks in the NFL Draft off of a team that lost five games last year.
  20. Arizona
  21. Utah - Nice win vs. Pitt. Didn't think they'd do it - gotta give 'em props.
  22. Pittsburgh - The second of two losing teams I still have ranked. This was the most underrated, bear of a matchup game this week. I didn't have Utah ranked last week, but they were right on the cusp for me then. I can't punish Pitt too hard for losing on the road in a tough game. I still think this team is the class of the Big East... yeah, I know.
  23. Brigham Young - I thought Washington was decent. Still kinda do. Aside from a couple flashes from the Huskies though, BYU handled them pretty well in a win.
  24. West Virginia
  25. South Carolina - We'll call this a cameo appearance after they didn't suck all of the life out of the opening Thursday. There's a first time for everything I suppose.

OUT:

  • Louisiana State - I had them ranked, and they won over a team I had ranked higher. Still, I couldn't do it in good conscience.
  • North Carolina - If I can't pull the trigger on LSU, I can't rank the team that lost to them in their only game.
  • Oregon State - They're probably my #26 team right now. There's no shame in losing to TCU, but it was a loss and their new QB looked like a big question mark.
  • Washington - They don't look like they've improved one bit, which has to be disappointing for a team with a senior quarterback who's a supposed NFL prospect.
STILL NOT IN:

  • Southern California - will not be included in my rankings this year.
  • Notre Dame - Sorry, Charlie Brian.
  • M*ch*g*n - blow me.

Crap, I forgot about not posting my poll until after the new one had come out. Here is mine from the other thread...yes, I have Boise at #3, but I move teams around a lot early, and if they suck later or other teams beat good teams while they stomp patsies, they will drop.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Boise State
4. TCU
5. Iowa
6. Nebraska
7. Miami (FL)
8. Oregon
9. Texas
10. Florida
11. Wisconsin
12. Georgia Tech
13. Florida State
14. Utah
15. Georgia
16. Arkansas
17. Oklahoma
18. LSU
19. Penn State
20. Auburn
21. West Virginia
22. USC
23. BYU
24. Virginia Tech

James Madison looked equally impressive versus Va Tech, which is why I don't look at "quality of opponents" this early in the season. It is too soon to know who is quality.

I simply don't believe Boise is the 3rd best team in the country because they don't get top ten talent, and wouldn't go 12-0, 11-1 in one of the power conferences.

There are 2 automatic qualifying conferences that may not have a ranked team after this week. I'm going to rank Miami but I'm not going to feel all that great about it. All ACC ranked teams lost. Georgia Tech to Kansas? FSU pounded by OU. Virginia Tech to James Madison. Maryland beat Navy last week but shouldn't have. I actually think the best news for the ACC was UVA's close loss to USC.

The Big East. Ugh.

The SEC all looked solid to excellent with the exception of the expected terrible Tennessee (who at least put up a fight for a little bit against Oregon) You could argue that Florida still doesn't look like Florida, but still I would expect them to beat everyone on their schedule except Bama.

Everyone but the bottom of the Big Ten looked solid to near excellent. Yes Penn State got whipped by Bama, but it wasn't that bad. If Bolden is a little more experienced the score is a lot more respectable. Thank you Kirk Ferentz for not sucking against the perennial sucktitude of Iowa State this year. TSUN has two (2)! wins over automatic qualifiers. Ok, neither team could tackle my 5 year old daughter but still. Michigan State, Northwestern, and Wisconsin all did what they needed to do, although I was hoping for MSU and UW to be a bit more convincing. Thank you Purdue and Illinois for not losing to FCS foes. Minnesota :shake:. Tim Brewster :shake:. (How does Minny feel about firing Glen Mason now? What kind of coach would Minny be able to get when they fire Brewster? Would say Butch Jones take that job right now? Would last years Butch Jones take this job?)

The Big 12 had a nice day picking on the ACC. The Kansas win over Georgia Tech came as a big surprise after the FCS loss the week before. Makes me wonder if Gill spent the fall preparing for the GT game and the players never took NDSU seriously. OU destroyed FSU. I think FSU's pass D gives confidence that Miami will still have the advantage in that game. The only other (semi) notable happening in the Big 12 was Okie State having a little trouble with Troy, but the consensus around here (state of Oklahoma) is that a 7-5 or 8-4 regular season would be a good rebuilding year. Everything else was as is it should be.

The Pac 10 also looked solid. Stanford might be joining Oregon in the Top 10 before long. Is the Pac 10 game of the season Stanford at Oregon on Oct 2nd? Both LA teams are disappointing thus far: UCLA looks terrible while USC looks mediocre. I'm not in the camp that won't rank USC in our BP Poll because of Coaches Poll ineligibility, but I'm probably still not ranking them because they're mediocre. The rest of the conference performed as expected.

Notable Non AQ teams:
Air Force smokes BYU. Can't really rank Air Force yet.
TCU smokes FCS.
Utah handles UNLV
Boise St's best opponent lost to James Madison. James Madison. James Madison
