2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

I think we see the old Pryor that we are used to with the addition of his hard work in the off-season. I truly believe JT knew if TP got hurt that the USC game was lost and he told him to work on his passing against NAVY. That being said he kept his running fresh with the bootleg TD and a couple of QB draws. I bet if TP get in the open field on a bootleg against USC he makes whatever he can happen. Like taking the leash off of a greyhound.

On ESPN Herbstreit sad tressel needs to coach and our players need to play to win not worry about making mistakes.. I totally agree with that
Something else I've been considering since the Navy game... in preseason we heard talk about the "new mindset" of the Buckeyes and how they were a little more freewheeling and willing to take some bigger risks as compared to last year's team which was more conservative as a group and sorta playing with a "don't screw up" mentality (owing to big game disappointments)....

So... was going for it on 4th down evidence of that? I don't know.. maybe...

In any case, I hope that the Buckeyes come out with the same sort of chip on their shoulder as the 02 team v. Miami... They ran sets that Miami wasn't expecting (Krenzel = leading rusher) and played tenacious D, willing to take risks like safety and corner blitzes. I don't think the same game plan as Miami will necessarily work against USC, but I do hope Tressel and company are looking to do something SC isn't ready for.

Berry hasn't even set foot on the field yet, and you're saying he's as good as Mo Wells was in space? Lest you forget, Mo also was a 5* RB out of Fla, so don't count your chickens before they're hatched...

Just a slight bit of hyperbole...

I'd like to see Berry play against USC. God knows having watched his speed for years here in Miami against speedy defenses, he knows how to deal with those kinds of defenses.

Was just thinking....one thing we did not see and I kind of recall hearing about this off-season was the Pistol formation....could this be something Tress is saving for this weekend??

My brother asked me this same exact question. I am not sure if that set for sure will be used but I remember they used it last year, and could give USC that same "who the heck is getting the ball???" mentality. TE's could be wide open out of a formation like this and the backs can find ways out of the back field to. You can do alot out of a pistol.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QrUXJcSCug]YouTube - The Spread Option Offense[/ame]
ignoring the music, the title, and the description of the video....
feel free to put me in my place if im just way off here but....

could we not run similar plays just sprinkled into our offense??
I realize this is highlights and I also realize the first clip WV is playing against Maryland....but I don't see why we couldn't be successful running some stuff like this here and there. The first play in the video is just an option like we ran Saturday is it not? Only it's a fake to the back and a pitch to the slot man who happens to be in motion. Sounds like something Lamaar Thomas could run nicely. I'd love to see Pryor and one of our speedy backs in the backfield and the D having no idea where the ball is going.

Would it not keep USC on their heals and in turn maybe help our Oline a bit?
The triple option gave us fits at times this past weekend....why couldn't we do something similar to USC so they aren't "pinning their ears back" (quote heard every 10 seconds in last year's game) and on the constant attack??

we just need one of these young guns to step up tomorrow like maybe a laamar thomas or duron carter. i just finished watching a ted ginn highlight from when he was here and man they need to start running some plays like the option with laamar thomas. speed kills

As proud as I am of the Buckeyes for their effort in that USC game last night, this game underscores the need for a fresh approach from an offensive perspective. It's not that I think that JT&Co do a horrible job with coaching the offense. I just think they do about an average job. But if JT wants to keep this program amongst the elite of CFB, then some things are going to have to change. I would love to see JT bring some fresh blood into the offensive coaching staff and turn over at least some of the playcalling to that person. The issues are now plain for even the most casual fans to see. I think one key addition to the offensive staff with a fresh and more aggressive approach could really do a lot for this program. And since the talent is already there on the field, I think the transitions would be relatively easy. It's not like the system needs a wholesale change. Staying within the parameters of the "pro-style" offense that we play from is fine. It's just that there is definitely something lacking and I don't think the person to do the fixing is currently on staff. And until JT is willing to go out and make these changes, I feel the Buckeyes are going to stay in the offensive rut they have been for much of JT's tenure. Being able to solve this issue is going to define JT as a coach in my mind. He will always have my respect, but how much respect is really the question. If he is truly a great coach, he will recognize the problem and actually take action to fix it. Because the flim-flaming he is doing right now is hurting his reputation and his legacy to an extent. And I believe that it is holding the program back from being amongst the elite of the elite in CFB. We're close, but just not quite there. Just my humble opinion.

I heard this too, and I simply don't buy it. Tress only wants to win his way.

Chris Ault's pistol is not the cure, but it is diverse and still exotic enough to be extremely effective in the proper hands, like TP'S.We have pistol elements, but it's more of a novelty rather than a base package with us.It's an excellent system, relatively easy to install and certainly effective.

I've said it on other threads, it's to the point now where it's clear that Tress absolutely must have an O Coordinator.

We have the talent to stretch the field, but no will. We have the talent to gain positive yards most plays, but are hamstrung by the specter of mistake free football.TP is not Todd, he needs to be able to play a little more loose.
