2009 Polls - Regular and Pre-Season

May be time to change the name of this thread

Picked up a copy of the 2009 Athlon Sports College Football Preview at Barnes and Noble today. Of note:

Bucks are 5th and #1 in the Big Ten. We have a lot of reloading to do but middle to end of the top 10 feels about right to me.

PSU (7th), MSU (20th), and Iowa (23rd) are in the top 25.

Florida beats Oklahoma in a rematch for the championship.

Ohio State has the 3rd ranked DL in the position rankings.

Notre Dame is ranked (24th), ugh.

As far as I know, this kicks off the college football preview mag season. Personally, glad to have something but looking forward to Phil Steele in about a week or so.

Note: Please split into its own thread if desired, noticed this thread had both 2007 and 2008 rankings in it so I figured I'd start here and let those in the know move it if needed. Didn't see this in any other threads yet, if already posted, sorry and please disregard.

Or we could move the post into the existing 2009 polls thread. :wink2:

Oh lordy, let's see...

1. Florida
Two words, Tim Tebow. The Gators return the greatest player in college football history
and the fastest defense in America. They have an SEC schedule that sets up nicely. At LSU on October 10th will be a test. But anything less than another BCS Championship will be a shocker. The Gators are loaded.
I'm always quick to defend Tebow, but this is the shit that makes it a fulltime job. "Greatest player ever"? Charlie K. doesn't have much sense of history. :roll1: If he wins a title this year, he's in the discussion, but people seem to want to accredit that 2006 title solely to him as well.

2. Oklahoma State
The Cowboys return quarterback Zac Robinson, tailback Kendall Hunter and receiver Dez Bryant. Defensively they will be vastly improved. A win over Georgia early will set in motion a memorable season for ?The Man? Mike Gundy. Yes you are reading this correctly. It?s an Oklahoma school, but a different one. With Georgia, Texas Tech and Texas all at home this could be a year they won?t soon forget in Stillwater.
:slappy: Number two? Seriously? They may be very good, but they're still Okie State for Chrissakes.

5. Alabama
Rebuilding an offensive line takes some time. Especially when breaking in a new quarterback. But after watching the Tide?s spring game I saw a defense that will take over games. Defense, a quarterback who can?t make mistakes and Nick Saban. By season's end, Alabama could be the second best team in the country and SEC.
A team that has a new OL and QB at #5? This isn't USC. Also, wasn't that defense supposed to be "game changing" last year?

6. Virginia Tech
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor now has big game experience and the athleticism to take over games. A strong defense returns and of course in Blacksburg special teams will win at least one game. The opener is a killer but a win could send the Hokies flying high all season. With a win over Alabama the Hokies could be the team to beat in the ACC. A loss could take weeks to recover from in a competitive ACC.
It's VaTech. They'll lose three games. They always do unless they have Mike Vick. Tyrod taylor isn't Marcus Vick.

10. Mississippi
The Rebels are good folks. Real good. Led by quarterback Jevan Snead, receiver Shay Hodge and multi-talented Dexter McCluster, and returning most of their offensive line, the score board will be lighting up in Oxford. Defensively they are good enough to exploit a weak non-conference schedule competitive enough to take every game down to the wire. And, with the experienced Snead behind center look for the Rebels to take up where they left off last season. Yes, they are for real!
Another hack drinking the Ole Miss/Houston Nutt koolaid.

11. Oklahoma
Last year's Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Sam Bradford and the Sooners will be as good as their new offensive line. And new they will be. The Sooners are replacing four starters across the front. Bradford has playmakers in his arsenal, but it?s hard to throw when your running for your life, or on your back. November 28th at home against Oklahoma State will be interesting and equally fun will be Longhorns in Dallas October 17th.
So AlaBAMA can replace their OL and QB and warrants top 5, but OU brings back their Heisman QB and a stable of explosive backs and is this low. Mmmkay.

13. South Florida
Senior quarterback Matt Grothe is posed to lead the Bulls to their first Big East championship. The gutty senior has weapons all around him on offense and a defense led by arguably the nation?s best edge rusher in George Selvie. USF travels to Tallahassee September 26th and entertains Miami November 28. Both sexy games with conference chest pounding ramifications at stake. However their season will come down to October 30th when West Virginia arrives in Tampa for the Big East championship.
Come on.

17. Penn State
Quarterback Daryll Clark returns and is a playmaker. However Clark will only go as far as his young and inexperienced offensive line takes him. Additionally, the receiving core must also be replaced. Defensively they must develop their defensive line and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The good news is Penn State plays Ohio State and Iowa at home.
Who is Clark gonna throw to? Can the inexperienced OL block for Royster/Green? Who the hell is going to cover anybody? I don't know if 9-4 gets you this high.

CFN ranks teams based solely on how good they think the teams are. Not based on how they think they'll end up based on their schedule and which games they think they'll win and lose.

[Soapbox]

It's how preseason polls should be voted, rather than the self-fulfillling prophecies that the preseason polls that are more predictions than rankings.

[/Soapbox]

CFN.Preseason.Rankings.1-10

CFN.11-20

There's one very important distinction in the CFN preseason rankings: these are based on how good the teams are going into the season and NOT how they're going to finish. Some teams have easier schedules than others, some get tougher road games and some will need a little bit of time to jell meaning they might be better than their final record might indicate.

1. Florida
2. USC
3. Oklahoma
4. Texas
5. Georgia
6. Ohio State
7. LSU
8. OKla State
9. Penn State
10. Cal
...
13. Iowa
17. Ntre Ame
19. Illinois
26. Mich State

CFN usually does a pretty good job. I like what they came up with a lot more than some of the others I've seen in this thread.

That said, them and others seem to be giving the benefit of the doubt to a lot of teams who are replacing a QB. Georgia is the most glaring of these to me - they were #13 in the final AP Poll from last season. After losing the top QB in the draft and the top RB in the draft they're now a top-10 or top-5 team?

The only program that has shown recently that it can sustain those kind of losses and be as good or better the next season is USC. Everyone else in my mind has to prove it on the field. If Georgia goes out and wins in Stillwater and starts off strong in SEC play then by all means, put them up there. Until then though I think their personnel losses need to be more heavily accounted for when considering how good they are RIGHT NOW.

Florida No. 1 in coaches' poll

August 7, 2009, 9:23 AM ET
Defending national champion Florida tops the USA Today preseason football coaches' poll, receiving 53 of 59 first-place votes.
Texas was second in the poll released Friday, followed by Oklahoma, Southern California, Alabama, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, LSU and Mississippi.
Texas had four first-place votes, and Oklahoma and Southern California each had one.
Virginia Tech and Mississippi are the new names in the coaches' top 10, replacing Oregon and TCU from last season's final poll. Virginia Tech finished last season at No. 14, while Mississippi ended last season 15th.
Oklahoma State was ranked 11th in the preseason poll, followed by California, Georgia, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Boise State, TCU, Utah, Florida State and North Carolina.
Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Brigham Young and Oregon State rounded out the Top 25.
The SEC led the Top 25 with five teams, with four in the top 10 and Georgia rounding out the conference delegation at No. 13. The Big 12, ACC and Pac-10 all had four teams each, while the Big Ten and Mountain West placed three teams.
The Big 12 and Big Ten put two teams each into the top 10.
Boise State of the WAC was the highest-ranked non-BCS school ranked in the Top 25, at No. 13.
The Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 59 coaches in the Bowl Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A.
The Associated Press preseason Top 25 will be released Saturday, Aug. 22.

My initial thoughts:

too high:

5. Alabama (should be around #12-15)
8. Penn St. (should be around #15)
10. Mississippi (should be around #20-25)
14. Oregon (should be around #23-25)
19. Florida St. (should be unranked)

too low:

4. USC (should be above OU)
7. Va Tech (should be about #5)
23. Notre Dame (I hate to say it, but should be about #15)
24. BYU (if Boise St. and TCU are in the top 17, BYU should be too)
NR. Illinois (should be about #15)
