The OSURFC returned to action this past weekend in league play against The University of Notre Dame. After our flyhalf spotted them twelve quick points thank to a blocked kick and an intercepted pass, we proceeded to outscore ND 43-3 the rest of the way.

Gophers Run - Midwest College Latest

Michigan was forced to forfeit to Bowling Green due to on-campus discipline problems. A late student activities council ruling on the Wolverines' latest infraction meant Bowling Green was not afforded enough time to find another opponent on their homecoming weekend. Michigan, which forfeited their first league game to Ohio State, is 0-2, but indications are they may be allowed to play soon.

Ohio State actually got to play for their second win, defeating #25 Notre Dame 43-15.

It didn't look like that would be outcome six minutes in, as the burly Notre Dame side ran in two quick tries to lead 12-0.

But #15 Ohio State recovered. A big try from prop Dave Knab - shoving aside defenders as he scored, and a long ruyn from hooker Matt Altieri sparked the Buckeyes to the comeback. Notre Dame answered with a penalty, but then Eric Sanchez touched down to give Ohio State a lead they would not relinquish.

"Notre Dame is much impproved," said Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney. "For us it was just a matter of settling our players down and getting into our pattern. They scored 12 points in six minutes, but the good news is we had plenty of time to come back."

Also looking good for OSU was their young back three, which was electric. Wing Robert Rhodes and freshman ullback Josh Holland both scored tries, while freshman wing Alex Brust scored two and kicked four conversions.

After a rare bye week, the OSURFC resumed league play against Purdue this past weekend:

AmericanRugbyNews.com College: Western scores

In Midwest league play, Ohio State put away Purdue 30-7. The Boilermakers scored from the opening kickoff but it was all downhill for them from that point onwards.

"We played flat and were out-rucked in the second half," Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told ARN.

Hooker Matt Altieri (2), center Spencer Dye and flankers Eric Sanchez and Kevin McNamara touched down for the Buckeyes. Alex Brust added the rest via his boot.

Midwest Crowded

Midwest Crowded

By Alex Goff

Wisconsin made quite the statement this weekend in the Midwest men's DI College competition, and in doing so are now in first place in the Midwest Western Conference.

Meanwhile Ohio State kept just ahead of Bowling Green with a 30-7 defeat of Purdue.

OSU is 3-0 in the Midwest's Eastern Conference, as is as is BGSU, 31-21 winners of Indiana.

Meanwhile Wisconsin is all alone on top of the Western Conference with their 19-15 upset of Minnesota, played in front of 2,000 at UM's TCF Bank Stadium.

That game was played at the UM football field, and featured a try by USA U20 lock Andrew Hanske in his hometown, on his birthday. Good day for Hanske, and for his Wisconsin team as well.

"We did OK at the Big 10 tournament and after that felt we could compete at this level," said Badger head coach Skip Heffernan, whose team moved up from DII after making the national DII final last season. "The key for us is to stay focused and play good defense."

New to DI, Wisconsin got three away games to start their season. They finished them off 3-0. Now they have two home games to wrap things up, and look in great shape for the playoffs.

"What I need to do is go back to the video of our scrimmage against UW-Whitewater and show the guys how bad we looked just to remind them," said Heffernan. That, he said, should keep them humble.

Also this weekend in the Midwest, Iowa State improved to 1-2 with a 39-5 defeat of Illinois. Things are of concern in Champaigne, as the Midwest tried to get Illinois to play Northern Iowa on Sunday to make up a rained out game. No go, as Illinois barely had 15 to play on Saturday and just went home.

Also in the Western, UW-Stout came back from a 19-0 deficit against Northern Iowa to dominate in the second half and win 41-19. Stout improves to 1-2.

But for Ohio State, this was another step in the young team's quest for a Midwest title.

The game started poorly for the Buckeyes. The opening kickoff hit the ground and rolled into the OSU 22. After micing the ball ahead for two phases, the Buckeyes attempted a clearing kick, only to see it charged down and taken in for a Purdue tri. This was not the first time OSU had had trouble with kick chargedowns, and coach Tom Rooney said he would be addressing in.

But Ohio State rebounded. They slotted a penalty a few minutes later, and then scored a well-taken try off a lineout. Center Spencer Dye, who had started so well this season and then pulled a hamstring, scored the try on his first game back from injury. Try-scoring hooker Matt Altieri then took over. He supported his centers and took an offload from center Chad Cochran to trundle in. It was Altieri again some minutes later when he broke a tackle and rumbled to the corner.

Flanker Eric Sanchez scored at the 40th minute from excellent support running off his centers.

That made it 25-7 at halftime, but with OSU going into the wind there was no chance of a blowout. Unable to kick far because of the wind the Buckeyes were content to keep the ball and serve out their time. Reserve flanker Kevin McNamara, in his first A-side game, capped off the scoring at the 28th minute as he finished off a long OSU movement that went through six sets of hands before they settled into his.

"I thought we played kind of flat and made some 50/50 decisions," said Rooney. "The blocked kick for a try was good aggressive play by Purdue, poor decision-making by us. But with that being said, we did manage to then hold the opponent scoreless the rest of the game. Very similar to the Notre Dame game."

UW-Stout is 1-2 after their comeback win (down 19-0 against UNI, Stout rallied to win 41-19). Notre Dame improves to 2-1 after beating Michigan on Friday 88-0.

The Buckeyes travel to Bloomington this weekend for a 1PM kickoff against the Hoosiers, who are 1-2 in the league after losses to ND and Bowling Green.

Indiana Relishes Upset of OSU

By Alex Goff

Indiana upset #13 Ohio State 13-10 Saturday to improve to 3-1 and clog up the top of the men's DI college Midwest league's Eastern Conference.

In a tight match, OSU were within ten meters of the IU line five times without scoring, and were a meter away at the end of time when an obstruction call ended their hopes.

"The match was a must win for us, but OSU didn't make it easy," said IU club president Dave Harbeck. "Their pack was much stronger than when we met them in the Big 10+1 tournament, but we were able to pull it together and get ourselves out of trouble when we had to."

That included the prolonged goalline stand at the end of the game, as they stymied a frustrated Buckeye side.

"Both teams played all 80 minutes to the fullest," said Harbeck.

No. 8 Tom Pribbeno scored Indiana's only try, while Matt Stutz added a converfsion and two penalty kicks, including the winner.

The loss dropped Ohio State to 3-1. Indiana is now 3-1 after their October 17 loss to Bowling Green will be reversed due to BGSU's failure to produce the paperwork all teams are required to have at every game.

This was our version of the Purdue football team...I am still not ready to talk about it. As bad as it was in person it is even worse on film. I simply can't get over it. We are a vastly more talented and athletic team than Indiana and just simply didn't exectue for 75 minutes.

The good news is that we still control our own destiny. Bowling Green comes to town Saturday evening at 6 PM. The winner earns the #1 seed out of the east and will stay home the following weekend to take on the #4 seed out of the west (likely Wisconsin-Stout or Northern Iowa). The lose drops to the #3 seed and has to travel to the west #2 (either Wisconsin or Minnesota). After that, the four teams still standing converge in Elk Hart, IN on November 14th-15th for the Midweset Championships.

The OSURFC locked up the #1 seed in the Midwest's east division with a 43-19 win voer BGSU last night. As the article states, we now get to stay at home next weekend while BG has to travel to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers. This was probably one of the most important wins in our program's recent history...or at least in my 6 years at OSU.

Ohio State Helps Out Coach

By Alex Goff

Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney is also the College Competitions head for the Midwest RFU. So it was his decision to award a forfeit victory to Indiana over Bowling Green for a paperwork violation.

The decision almost bit Rooney's OSU team in the Buckeyes. What it meant was that going into this weekend Indiana was 3-1, not 2-2 (since they actually lost that game v. Bowling Green). IU played winless Michigan (pictured right, Joan Shepherd photo), and kept the Wolverines winless, taking the game, as expected, 48-5.

That meant that Ohio State, which lost to Indiana last weekend 13-10, had to beat Bowling Green Saturday night to have a shot at a home playoff game.

"I had to do it [make the forfeit decision]," said Rooney. "But it put us behind the eightball."

Rooney's players bailed him out, playing a very different game from last weekend's effort to beat BGSU 43-19.

With scrumhalf Mickey Franco pestering the Bowling Green team and opening up space for his backs, Ohio State ran out to a 15-0 halftime lead, and weathered a torrid stretch where Bowling Green scored two tries in two minutes. Hooker Matt Altieri continued his scoring touch, running in from 40 meters, as he often does, while the OSU back three looked smooth in producing some impressive tries.

"We seem to have found our backline," said Rooney. "And the biggest thing way, we didn't drop the ball. We couldn't hold onto it last week. This week we did."

And Bowling Green didn't. They missed penalty kicks. They had tries set up and the final pass just fall away, or down. It seemed like Bowling Green was snakebit. Whatever the reason, Ohio State finishes the league season 4-1 and in first place in the Midwest-East.

Indiana is 2nd, while Bowling Green drops to 3-2 and third.

Also of note, Notre Dame defeated Purdue and finishes 3-2 as well, making the Midwest playoffs for the first time since their program was re-started.

In the Midwest-West, Northern Iowa made a big move, upsetting Minnesota to move to 2-2. UNI is still owed a game with Illinois which could affect their playoff prospects. Wisconsin, UW-Stout, Minnesota and UNI are in the playoffs, we just don?t know in what specific order.

AmericanRugbyNews.com Midwest all sorted

The Midwest has sorted out who's in and who's out of its regional playoffs.

Following this past weekend's round of matches the postseason teams have been determined.

WEST
Wisconsin will be #1 with 23 pts (earned 5 against Illinois) (carries #2 seed)
Minnesota will be #2 with 17 (earned 1 in a close loss to UNI)
Stout will be #3 with 16 (earned 5 against Iowa State)
UNI will be #4 with 10 plus what Midwest awards for the Illinois rain-out (probably 3)

EAST
OSU #1 with 21 points (carries #1 seed) thanks to the 43-19 win against BG
Indiana #2 with 20 (carries #3 seed)
BGSU #3 with 15 (carries #4 seed)
ND #4 with 13

Bowling Green has appealed the forfeit to Indiana. It sits with the Midwest president, competitions chair and discipline/eligibility chair.

Provided it is not overturned....

OSU hosts UNI Nov 7
Minnesota hosts BGSU Nov 7

Indiana hosts Wisconsin Stout Nov 7
Wisconsin hosts Notre Dame Nov 7

The winners advance to the Midwest Championships Nov 14-15 in Elk Hart, IN
OSU/UNI winner plays Minnesota/BGSU winner
Indiana/Stout winner plays Wisconsin/ND winner

The BG forfeit, if overturned, would still not changed the fact that we have earned the #1 seed...it just means Indiana and BG would flip seeds. I will post the time of the UNI game against once it has been officially announced.

The Lantern - Rugby rising up sports ladder

By Zach Brust
For The Lantern
Published: Thursday, November 5, 2009

Rugby is a sport in which 30 men with no pads get on a 100-yard field and clobber each other in the defense of their "Try Zone." It is a game of high'contact hits, but also 50'yard dazzling runs; a game of contradictions - violence one second and finesse moves the next - and a game where ball control, defense, scrums, passes, long runs, goal line stands and power hits all come into play.

Rugby is a game of scars.

At its most fundamental level, rugby is exactly like football in that the goal of the game is to protect your try zone and try to score in the other team's zone. A "try", or touchdown, is worth six points. An extra point adds one, and field goals or dropkicks through the uprights are worth three.

Part 2 coming out on Tuesday…and we have the Big10 Network coming to film practice on Wednesday for a segment on next Friday night's Big10 Tailgate show.
