St. Ignatius Duo To Attend Spring Game
Posted by Bill Kurelic on Apr 14, 2009 at 9:59 am

Bucknuts.com already had Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker Scott McVey on the list of prospects planning to attend the Ohio State spring game on April 25.

McVey has a scholarship offer on the table from the Bucks and has Ohio State as his clear leader. He is a strong candidate to become the Buckeyes' next verbal commitment.

Another fine prospect from St. Ignatius, tight end Brendan Carozzoni, says he too will attend the Bucks' spring game.

The 6-foot-4 and 220-pound Carozzoni caught close to 20 passes and scored twice as St. Ignatius finished with a 14-1 record and won the Division 1 state championship last season.

Carozzoni has scholarship offers from Pitt, Indiana, Ohio University, Bowling Green, Toledo, Buffalo and Ball State.

Notice there have been several updates...."???" indicate either likely to attend or there is solid info that the recruit is considering attending...

Key recruits to attend OSU's spring game

Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Posted by Bill Kurelic

Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel has four verbal commitments. Three of the top prospects in the state of Ohio have announced they are headed to OSU, linebacker Jamel Turner (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline), offensive lineman Andrew Norwell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and defensive end J.T. Moore (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman).

Linebacker/defensive end David Durham (Austin, Texas/Westlake) is Tressel's lone out-of-state commitment at his point.

The Buckeyes' spring game is Saturday and some of the top targets on Tressel's list will be in attendance, including linebacker Scott McVey (Cleveland/St. Ignatius). McVey, who has scholarship offers from Ohio State, Boston College, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, West Virginia and others, has the Buckeyes comfortably at the top of his and is a candidate to become commitment No. 5 for Tressel this weekend.

Under Armour All-American defensive back LaMarcus Joyner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) will head north to Ohio State's spring game with fellow Aquinas star Duron Carter who signed with the Buckeyes in February. Joyner has Ohio State at the top of his list, but after recently visiting Florida State, said the Seminoles are right on the Bucks' heals. After this weekend he will determine if OSU remains his leader or FSU moves into his top spot.

Offensive lineman Andrew Donnal (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) attended Notre Dame's spring game last weekend and will be in Columbus this weekend. Donnal has a very good list of scholarship offers, though it does not include Ohio State at this point.

Another top in-state prospect who will attend the Buckeyes' spring game on Saturday is running back Erick Howard (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover). If the Buckeyes were to offer it might not take Howard long to commit.

Defensive back Christian Bryant (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) and defensive end teammate Jayrone Elliott will attend the Bucks' spring game. Bryant has over a dozen scholarship offers while Elliott has a couple Big Ten offers, though neither has an offer from Tressel to this point.

Tressel has offered Under Armour All-American Nick Montana (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian). Montana is the Buckeyes' target at quarterback this recruiting season. If they can land Montana he will be the only quarterback they sign this year. They won't offer anyone else at the position until they know what Montana is going to do. Montana attended Notre Dame's spring game last Saturday.

"I'm still trying to see if I can make it to (Ohio State's) spring game," Montana said. "If I do it will be a late decision."

Removed Kenny Shaw (never had Keion Payne down for a visit this weekend and it has been confirmed he isn't coming) and added James Louis for this weekend...also removed the "???" after Brandon Linder.

The leaderboard

It's going to be a huge weekend in Columbus, Ohio, both on and off the field for Ohio State because multiple highly touted prospects, including five Under Armour All-Americans, are scheduled to be on campus for the game between the Buckeyes and Trojans (8 p.m./ESPN).

The nation's No. 2 overall prospect, linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), is scheduled to be on campus, and it could be an official or an unofficial visit. Most believe Hicks will end up either in Columbus or at Texas, though there are other schools in the mix as well.

Offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), who is the No. 4 overall prospect, is scheduled for an official visit and Ohio State is one of several schools that are in the mix for the 6-7, 295-pounder.

Also, cornerback Lamarcus Joyner (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Saint Thomas Aquinas) will be making the trip back up to Columbus (his high school team actually played a game there a couple of weeks ago) for a visit. Joyner, who likes Florida State, Florida and the Buckeyes, is the No. 12 overall prospect in the country and will be joined by his high school teammate, four-star center Brandon Linder. Joyner is an Under Armour All-American

Athlete Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), offensive lineman Chaz Green (Tampa, Fla./Catholic), wide receiver James Louis (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic Community) and cornerback Joshua Shaw (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale) are expected to attend the game as well. All are Under Armour All-Americans and ESPNU 150 prospects, and have Ohio State in the mix for their services. Louis is committed to the Buckeyes.

Hicks headlines arguably most talented group of visitors in Ohio State history
The Buckeyes are expected to play host to six Under Armour All-American, nine ESPNU 150 prospects and dozens of 2011 prospects for Ohio State's prime time showdown with USC, ESPN affiliate Web site Bucknuts.com reports.

2010 Under Armour All-Americans including outside linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester/Lakota West), cornerbacks Lamarcus Joyner (Miami/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Joshua Shaw (Palmdale, Calif.), offensive tackle Chaz Green (Tampa, Fla./Catholic), wide receiver James Louis (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic) and athlete Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) are expected to make official visits.

ESPNU 150 prospect, offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham), four-star center Brandon Linder (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and four-star punter Will Hagerup (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) are also likely to attend officially.

Offensive tackle Matt James (Cincinnati/St. Xavier), defensive back Christian Bryant (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) and defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins (Detroit/Southeastern) are also expected to be amongst several unofficial visitors.

Ohio State's coaching staff used the USC game as part of a huge recruiting weekend. The Buckeyes hosted six Under Armour All-Americans and nine prospects from the ESPNU 150.

Before the weekend was over, the Buckeyes had made their first score on the recruiting front.

Under Armour All-American running back/wide receiver Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) committed to the Buckeyes before leaving Columbus. He picked Ohio State over scholarship offers from Miami, Rutgers, West Virginia and Pitt.

Tressel's success from the weekend probably won't include just Brown. Before all is said and done on national signing day, the Buckeyes' boss seems likely to have landed others who were in Columbus over the weekend.

Under Armour All-American linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio, Lakota West) was also on an official visit to Ohio State and it would certainly not come as a shock if Hicks eventually ended up at Ohio State.

The country's No. 1 offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) also said he "loved it" at Ohio State.

"I could definitely see myself out there," Henderson said.

Punter Will Hagerup (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish) visited Wisconsin the weekend of Sept. 5 and Ohio State this past weekend. He still has trips set to Florida this coming weekend and Michigan the weekend of Sept. 26. But Hagerup left no doubt he was impressed after attending the Ohio State-USC game.

"It was incredible," Hagerup said. "I didn't know it would be as fun as it was. I've been to other college games before. Those were fun. But (Saturday) night was at a completely different level. I don't know that a sporting event could get much better than that."

The Buckeyes also hosted Under Armour All-American defensive backs LaMarcus Joyner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Josh Shaw (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale).

When asked about the atmosphere at the Ohio State-USC game on Saturday night, Shaw said, "It was 10 times better than anything I've ever experienced before. Ohio State is definitely my favorite. I would say I'll know more after I take my other visits."

Shaw has official visits set to Florida Sept. 19 for the Florida-Tennessee game, LSU Oct. 10 when the Tigers play Florida and Notre Dame Oct. 17 when the Irish play USC.

Offensive lineman Chaz Green (Tampa, Fla./Catholic) is perhaps the least-likely prospect to end up a Buckeye who made an official visit to OSU this past weekend. Green has had the Buckeyes, Florida and USC as his top choices, but beating out the Gators will likely prove difficult for either the Buckeyes or Trojans.
