2009 NFL Free Agency Discussion

From PFT

CASSEL IS A CHIEF

Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 12:56 PM

Wow.

Less than a week ago, I opined at SportingNews.com that the Chiefs and the Patriots wouldn't be able to work out a trade for quarterback Matt Cassel because each side would be overly concerned about the perception that the other got the better side of the bargain.

So much for that.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the deal is done -- Cassel has been traded from the Patriots to the Chiefs.

More details and reaction to come.

Cassel and Vrabel for a second round choice. Looks like New England needed to dump some salary.

Good deal for the Chiefs if Cassel can manage a game halfway decently.. maybe the Pats are dumping salary for Peppers?

EDIT: Not a done deal yet, apparently.. PFT again

"MYSTERY TEAM" MAKING PLAY FOR CASSEL?

Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 1:49 PM

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that another unknown team has attempted to crash the Pioli-Patriots party involving the rights to quarterback Matt Cassel.

It's unknown whether the move came before the deal was finalized, and whether the Pats would be inclined to renege on an agreement in principle with Kansas City.

If they do, it would be an interesting development in the relationship between the Patriots and their former V.P. of player personnel.

Under the deal between the Chiefs and the Pats, the 34th overall selection in the draft goes to New England. As Peter King of SI.com (and NBC) points out, it gives the Patriots three second-round picks in the 2009 draft.

If the rumor about Tampa Bay wanting to send the 19th pick and a 2010 pick is true, wonder why the Pats dumped Cassel to the Chiefs for a 2nd rounder?

I find it very odd that they traded both Vrabel and Cassel for a 2nd. Just doesn't seem like a good deal. Unless they send their new 2nd rounder and their first to Carolina. That would make sense, and would make OSUBucks22's rumor true.

EDIT: Cassel to KC is a done deal, guess the Bucs didn't have it in them.

I've been passed out for awhile and just came to a little bit ago...Was reading up about how the broncos were shopping cutler earlier in the day,and Cassel was a shot to go to denver...Needless to say i'm glad Cassel is in KC,and I'm wondering if the broncos front office drank some of that same shit I did last night.......

My jaw dropped when I read that Denver was shopping Cutler. Apparently the front office didn't realize that Cutler was the reason they were even in the hunt last year. He throws picks, but when he gets that under control I'm pretty confident that he'll be a top 5 QB in the NFL.

I don't think it is a talent issue...he's just a crybaby punk. And he alays has that arrogant, smug look on his face.

Not saying you trade the guy, but I can see why he isn't liked within the organization.

He's perfect for what they're going to run on offense, and it's so tough to find franchise QBs. I'm shocked even if they don't like him. Haha

He was pissed when MS was fired...He was pissed because he was being shopped around..He gets pissed when his oline can't block, and he gets pissed when they lose...He forces bad passes a lot.He throws a lot of picks, but when you are on 5th string Rb's defenses don't have to gamble much on the run.

I can't even begin to think why someone would think Cassel would have been an improvement over Cutler. I couldn't imagine what Cutler would do if he was at new england.

EDIT: Take this with a grain of salt, but I just heard that now Cutler is asking to be traded lol.....

I was going to start a thread about the Lions.. because I really think they've improved this off-season.

They've done a great job signing some quality players, starting on defense. Their head coach has a lot to do with that.

They added Julian Peterson, Phillip Buchanon, Grady Jackson and Anthony Henry. Peterson is a very good pass-rushing OLB, Buchanon is their best CB immediately and Henry is a good safety-type CB who will be effective in coverage against 3 and 4 WR sets. He's pretty good at creating turnovers too, if I'm not mistaken. Jackson is a little old, but since they traded Cory Redding he'll be one of the starting DTs. He's big enough to plug holes.

They still really need a defensive end who can put consistent pressure on the QB, but their defense is definitely improved.

On offense they've signed a couple WRs in Bryant Johnson and Ronald Curry. I think Curry is pretty underrated and Johnson is a good third option with the potential to be a very good second option with Calvin Johnson stretching the field on the opposite side. They signed Maurice Morris as Kevin Smith's backup, so they should be solid in the running game if they can get some decent blocking. About blocking - they signed Terrelle Smith, one of the better FBs in the league. He should be good for the running game. I think he's solid catching out of the backfield as well.. could be wrong though.

Looks like they're (finally) on the right track.

Not that anybody cares. I'm killing time before the CBJ game. :p
