2009 NFL Free Agency Discussion

Didn't see a thread for this, hopefully I didn't miss it.. wanted a place to discuss the exciting free agency period (I find it exciting ).

Big names.. looks like Brian Dawkins is a Denver Bronco. Denver also signed Renaldo Hill and Jabar Gaffney.

NY Jets are making some huge splashes, like last year. Bart Scott is signed, they're looking to trade for Lito Sheppard, they're interested in ex-Raven Jim Leonhard. If the Jets can get Sheppard and Leonhard, they're going to have a tough defense next year. Their secondary is going to be excellent with Sheppard (potentially) playing opposite Darrelle Revis, who has solidified himself as a top 10 corner in the league, and Leonhard playing safety with Kerry Rhodes is a very nice combination. They'll have one of the more impressive LB groups with David Harris and Bart Scott on the inside, Calvin Pace and hopefully an emerging rush OLB in Gholston. Defensive line is solid with Kris Jenkins in the middle and a couple huge DEs who are solid in a 3-4.

Haven't heard much about Ray Lewis and Chris Canty.

Interesting that the Titans signed Kerry Collins to a two year deal.. Vince Young has two years remaining on his contract. It'll be interesting to see how they draft in the next couple years.

It was posted on a Tampa Bay Buccaneers blog that had some legit rumors that I was seeing on other sites. Never saw anything else about it. No idea what their source was..

Thanks... I hadn't heard that one at all...

Most of the rumors I hear around Cassel are about him going to the Chiefs... The newest is a 3-way deal that sends Cassel to KC, Julius Peppers to NE, and KC's 1st & 1 of NE's 2nd's to Carolina...

Dang. Heck of a deal there.

I'm going to try to find the Bucs blog that I found the original rumor on and see if it says anything about why that was posted/if it was actually legit at one time.

EDIT: It appears that it might have been legit, and still might be.

This time of year, rumors pop up from all over the place. Realistically we could even start them here and site "sources" and probably get away with it (we wouldn't do that though). But some keep coming around again and now that the Bucs have lost out on Albert Haynesworth, they may be making a push for another big name.
The rumors are that the Bucs could be testing the water and seeing what the New England Patriots might realistically want for Matt Cassel. Tampa Bay could sign him, but if the Pats didn't match, the Bucs would be required to give up two 1st-round picks - something many of us won't be happy with. However, the cost to acquire the quarterback might not be as much as we think. New England may only be looking for a 1st-round and a 4th-round pick.

Odd that nobody else is talking about this.

There are a couple other things in that blog that are eh.. like TJ Housh ready to sign a contract in 15 minutes. That was yesterday. :p

EDIT 2: PFT is acknowledging the rumor now. I shouldn't have said where I read that so it would've looked like I had league sources.
