Ballard on John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List

Manhasset, N.Y. (July 29, 2009) - The 2009 John Mackey Award watch list has been released by the Nassau County Sports Commission. Given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2009 John Mackey winner will be announced on December 10, 2009.

NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.

The John Mackey Award presented since 2000, lists eight NFL players as alumni: Dallas Clark ('01) of the 2006 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, two-time Super Bowl Champion Daniel Graham ('02) of the Denver Broncos, Kellen Winslow II ('03) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller ('04) of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Marcedes Lewis ('05) of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Matt Spaeth ('06) of the of the 2008 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, Fred Davis ('07) of the Washington Redskins and the 2008 John Mackey Award recipient Chase Coffman of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Terrelle Pryor, the 2008 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, led the Big Ten with a pass efficiency rating of 151.3 in conference games last season, making him the first freshman to top the conference in the category since the stat was introduced in 1980.

FORT WORTH, Texas (August 3, 2009) - The Davey O'Brien Foundation and its National Selection Committee are pleased to announce the 2009 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award? (The O'Brien) Watch List.

The 2009 list highlights 33 quarterbacks who will compete for the award honoring the nation's best quarterback; however, all 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) starting quarterbacks are equal candidates at this time. Watch List candidates were selected by a subset of The O'Brien Selection Committee. The list focuses on a select group of quarterbacks who have demonstrated what members of the Selection Committee have recognized as tremendous preseason talent. The award focuses on accomplishments both on and off the field.

Coleman, Spievey on Thorpe Award watch list
August 6, 2009
Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

The preseason award watch lists continue to roll in, with the Thorpe Award up next. Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins took home the hardware last year, but the Big Ten doesn't have a major presence on the list of candidates entering the 2009 season.

Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman and Iowa cornerback Amari Spievey were the only Big Ten players selected to the list.

Coleman is projected as the Big Ten's top safety after recording four interceptions, five pass breakups and a forced fumble to go along with 78 tackles last season for the Buckeyes.

Allstate and American Football Coaches Association to Honor Student-Athletes Who Make Off-the-Field Contributions

NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 22 -- A hard-working and committed group of college football players will take the field this fall knowing that the impact they have on their teams and communities has nothing to do with touchdowns, tackles or receptions. For a second consecutive year, Allstate Insurance Company has partnered with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) to announce the list of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team((R)), which honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
