Chatting with new Big East commissioner John Marinatto


In a March New York Times profile about John Marinatto, longtime friend Rick Pitino described the Big East's new commissioner and self-avowed workaholic as "the most boring person he's ever met." It should come as no surprise, then, that Marinatto, who began his new job last Wednesday, spent most of the July 4th holiday weekend in his office.

"I had to stay true to Rick's quote," he said.

After spending 14 years as athletic director at Providence and the past seven years as the Big East's senior associate commissioner, Marinatto, 51, was tapped last fall to succeed Mike Tranghese, who retired last week after 19 years as commissioner. I caught up with Marinatto shortly into his first week on the job to discuss his plans for the conference, the BCS (which he will now help administer) and other issues facing college athletics.

SI.com: You moved up to commissioner last Wednesday. What's changed so far?

Marinatto: I don't think anything's changed except the responsibilities. I'm in the same office, I haven't moved down the hall or anything. Michael was here up through last week and was even in over the weekend and left me some notes. I left Saturday around 4 o'clock to go to mass, and when I came back Sunday morning he'd snuck a note under my door.

South Florida kicker Bonani falls 35 feet from Busch Gardens ride

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A University of South Florida football player was recovering at a hospital after falling 35 feet from a gondola ride while working at Busch Gardens in Tampa, team officials said.

Team officials identified the player as Maikon Bonani, 20, USF's starting kicker. The park did not immediately release the employee's name or the extent of his injuries, said spokeswoman Jill Revelle.

The employee was working Saturday at the Skyride attraction. After sending passengers on a gondola out of the station, the employee thought the door might be unlocked and held onto the door to check it while guests sat on the ride, according to a park statement. He held on as the gondola took off -- then 35 feet above the ground -- let go and dropped into a landscaped area, the statement added.

"He was trying to make sure they were safe," said Revelle of those on the ride. She added that no one else was injured.

Pitt picked to win Big East

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Pittsburgh has been picked to win the Big East in a media poll, with West Virginia, Cincinnati and South Florida following closely behind.

The Panthers, returning 14 starters for coach Dave Wannstedt, received 161 points and eight of a possible 24 first-place votes in a pool released Tuesday.

The Mountaineers received 151 points and five first-place votes.
The Bearcats, who won the conference and played in the Orange Bowl last season, also received eight first-place votes and 144 points.

Louisville names Justin Burke its starting quarterback for Sept. 5 opener vs. Indiana State - ESPN

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe has named junior Justin Burke his starting quarterback for the Sept. 5 opener against Indiana State.

Burke, an NC State transfer, had been battling junior college transfer Adam Froman for the No. 1 job ever since the spring. But Froman had been slowed in the past week with muscle pull in his upper back, clearing the way for Burke to take control.

Still, Kragthorpe said Burke didn't win the job by default.

Sources at the University of Louisville have informed the National Football Post that Jon Gruden will be the school's No. 1 choice to replace Steve Kragthorpe as head coach if Kragthorpe is fired, as expected. Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich believes his school can compete for a national championship, and luring a coach with Gruden's resume and experience would be a giant step in that direction. Gruden's brother Jay is a former Louisville quarterback and led the team to an 8-3 record in his senior season.

Interesting. Hard to believe Chuckie would be interested. He'll probably be a pretty hot commodity for NFL openings next year.
