Behind the Numbers
Looking Behind the Numbers can be fun. In 2005, we not only witnessed the meteoric rise of Troy Smith and watched his passing efficiency soar to 4th in the nation; but we also witnessed a rushing defense that was a statistical monster. It was so good in fact, that Differential Statistical Analysis (DSA) was invented, just to keep track of how amazing that rushing defense was.
2008 looks like it's going to be a different story. The standard statistics are downright depressing, and unless there is a remarkable turnaround, DSA will probably be worse when we get far enough into the season for it to be useful. All that's left is to find the numbers that are the biggest casualties of this train wreck.

Most Buckeye fans would agree that the problem is mostly in the trenches. One of the few sets of numbers that is attributable primarily to line-play bears that out. Ohio State is 73rd in the nation in sacks, and a dismal 105th in sacks allowed. Only 6 FBS teams are giving up more sacks per game than the Buckeyes.

Much of this can be blamed on the fact that the Illini showed the world the template for attacking these Buckeyes last November; and the template still works. The Buckeyes' inability to protect the quarterback has inevitably resulted in appalling pass efficiency numbers.

Before the Illinois game last year, Todd Boeckman had a passing efficiency of 158.16 against FBS opponents. Since then, Todd's PE rating has plummeted over 38% to 97.86 vs. FBS foes.

It can't help Todd's confidence that he is now facing the team with the #1 passing efficiency defense in the country: Not the men of troy, but Troy. No kidding, it is the Trojans from Alabama that lead the nation in defending the pass. Of course it doesn't hurt that one of their two games was against a brutally bad FCS team (Alcorn St.). Nevertheless, Troy has put up good numbers all around.

In fact, there are only two statistical categories in which the Buckeyes outrank the Sun Belt Trojans: Kickoff Returns and Turnover Margin. Strangely enough, even though the Buckeyes are ranked 98th in returning kicks; Troy manages only 110th place.

Troy is ranked higher in every other category except TO Margin: Every one of them. It is Troy who ranks in the top 15 in 8 statistical categories, including total and scoring offense as well as total and scoring defense.

Ohio State, on the other hand, ranks higher than 32nd in only 4 categories, and in these, their best categories, they lag behind Troy in all of them.

Welcome to Bizarro World.
The Lighter Side
Well, last weekend your worst fears came true. Being that the loss to the Trojans came underneath the famous "Hollywood" sign, it seems fitting to me that the weekend reminded me of a couple of Rocky movies. First was Rocky III. Do you remember when Rock-o gets ready to go defend the title against Clubber Lang? Right before the fight, Burgess Meredith gets pushed in to a wall or something and ends up having to sit out the fight. Witness Chris Wells having to stand and watch all game long in sweatpants and no pads. Without his guy at his side, Rocky goes out and gives Clubber an uninspired punching bag to work on. And... Clubber did just that, making quick work of Rocky, living up to his billing as a lean mean wreckin machine.
The other Rocky movie that comes to mind was the beginning of Rocky II. Mostly the visual experience of the movie, not so much the plot. If you recall, in 1976 Rocky went up against the champ, and while he lost, he was the poster boy for "Moral Victory." That's all well and good, but it's not what I'm talking about. On that poster was the picture of a guy with half his head caved in, a right eye that was buried under two bulbous blood blisters, and enough puffiness in his cheeks to make the Stay-puff marshmallow man look quite svelte in his attack on New York in 1984 in comparison. It was this image of Rocky, repeated at the beginning of the film, which I thought of with regard to Ohio State. Beaten. Hurt. Scarred. Rocky came out of Rocky II with a victory and a belt. As unlikely as that seems for the Buckeyes right now, we fans must remember, all is not lost. I am loathe to admit this, but the fact is, Ohio State played a team which was superior to them on the 13th. I'm not one to buy in to the hype, but what I saw on September 13th was a unforgiving buzz-saw taking it to my Buckeyes. They smacked Ohio State in the mouth, and they deserve all the credit. If Ohio State wants to be the best, they now have had a first hand look at what that'll take.

Up this week are the Trojans.... The men of troy.... again. Unlike the Rocky series, however, this is far from a second shot at the champ. No, this is a completely unrelated team of Trojans. These Trojans are undersized. These Trojans, while up to the task at hand, decrease pleasure. Actually, as I think about it, I suppose they share that in common with last week's Trojans, but for different reasons. In any case these Trojans are not the well lubricated machine of last week. And one of two things will happen. First, it's entirely possible the Buckeyes will show up looking old and beaten, having lost their former riches and just trying to make a living like Rocky V's Rocky. I figure the Troy Trojans will probably play the part of Tommy "Machine" Gunn - emboldened by their relative success against weak competition and maybe believing some of the hype I expect us Buckeye fans will have to endure from the media. There can be little question, anyway, that they will saunter in to Ohio Stadium looking to call out the former champ to a street brawl.

The other possibility is that Ohio State will show up like Rocky IV's Rocky. I don't think anyone will mistake the Troy club with a hulking, steroid fueled, Dolf Lundgren. But, I would expect the Buckeyes to take some time to lick their wounds - like Rocky mourning the death of his friend Apollo Creed - before going to work running up mountains, chopping firewood, lifting giant mesh bags of stones, and outrunning KGB agents in preparation for redemption. These Buckeyes need to get back to basics, like Rock did. They need to look inside themselves and remember what sort of hunger it takes to be a champion. It won't, and can't, happen in just one week, but the goal is still the same. To be standing there, in the late rounds, beaten and bruised, but with the formerly hostile crowd chanting your name. It can all start this week with Troy.

This week will be hard, Buckeye fans. It'll come from the media with vigor, as I'm sure no one is happier with them self than Mark May is. Expect many stories and tales about how Ohio State is dead and buried, a fraud, and a waste. You'll hear about how any one now has a chance of beating the Buckeyes, that the Ohio showing was the "Real" Ohio State. They'll forget that USC is, indeed, an outstanding team, resting their arguments on a simple "I told you so." They won't give much mention to the fact that UCLA got dismantled by a BYU team who's starting O-Line weighs as much as your computer. They won't bring up that #2 Georgia struggled mightily with the South Carolina Gamecocks. No. They will focus on Ohio State, and they will take joy and pleasure at rubbing it in. Remember this as you try to keep from yelling [censored] at your Television: there is no shame in losing to a better team. That's all that happened last week, folks. Ohio State lost to a team that was just plain better. It happens. You learn, and you move on. This week begins a run towards earning respect. This week begins a new approach to Ohio State football. One where they, like Rocky in the USSR (remember them? AKA CCCP?), they can play the role of the hated foreigner who deserves a crushing defeat, but who slowly changes that perception with hard work and inspired performance.

So, what's it going to be? Does Ohio State take a look at itself now? You know, when Bobby Bowden took over at Florida State, the Seminoles weren't very good. Bobby's plan was to play "anyone, anywhere." He figured he'd take some lumps, but his team would begin to see first hand what it takes to win. These Buckeyes are in a similar situation in some ways. They're clearly better than those old FSU teams and don't need to learn how to win just any game. That, they've still got. But, they need to learn how win a certain kind of game. They need to reflect on these losses and realize, it's one thing to do what you do and be confident in that scheme and quite another to stick to it at all costs. This club needs to realize, changes need to be made. No, not wholesale changes. But, changes enough to compete with the best of the best.

I don't know. Maybe the Rocky references are the wrong way to go here. It could be as simple as treating what remains of our Buckeyes as if it were "Steve Austin, astronaut. A man barely alive." Indeed, perhaps the opening lines to the old TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man" is more the way to go:

Ohio State, football team. A team barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild them. We have the technology. We have the capability to build a dominant juggernaut. Ohio State will be that team. Better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster.

You'll be asked to give up your allegiance to Ohio State football. You'll be laughed at for trying to maintain it. But, folks, no matter what you hear, this is not Michigan. This is not Notre Dame. Our "fall" doesn't have to be "off the map." And it all starts this week.

If this lighter side is a rambling mess this week, you'll have to excuse me. I wrote it while trying to perform arthroscopic surgery on the largest knee I've ever seen.
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
Trojan Walk - A lot of schools have a processional where the players march in to the stadium, providing some excitement and allowing fans to become closer to the players and coaches. Troy Univerity's style, however, is unique. Starting under Coach Larry BlakelyThe Trojans come in wearing bow ties. Not the most conventional of looks, the march is perhaps a testament their dedication and sound self esteem.

Battle for the Ol' School Bell - In 1924 Troy began a rivalry with Jacksonville State University. In those days, both schools were teachers colleges making the Ol' School Bell trophy a fitting award to be given to the winner. While the Jacksonville State Gamecocks hold the all-time edge 33-28-2, the Trojans have won 12 of the last 15 meetings and 7 straight. This streak has resulted in the Ol' School Bell calling Troy University home for the last ten year. It is likely to remain with Troy for a while, as Jacksonville State is absent from the schedule for the foreseeable future.

"The Kick" - Down 14-0 at the end of the 1st quarter in the 1984 Division II National Championship game, the Trojans staged an inspired comeback which culminated in Ted Clem's 50 yard field goal as time expired. "The Kick" was Clem's third FG of the day and made the score 18-17 as Troy won the Title.

Home Sweet Home - Troy has called many places home over the years. The first team played its games off campus at a field on Orion Street. However, in 1910, "The Association" commissioned to be built an athletic field on the north side of the old campus. The field itself was physically built by then coach V.P. McKinley, the players, and a handful of students. Surrounded by a 6 foot fence, the area featured a grandstand and some bleachers for fans to sit in attendence.

In 1925 the team moved again, this time on to campus grounds on a site which is now "Shackleford Hall." Then, over the next 25 years, the team played its games on the grounds where "Smith Hall" now sits, and on a field that is presently the outfield of Riddle-Pace Field, where Troy plays baseball.

Finally, in 1950 the University opened Veterans Memorial stadium opened, honoring Pike County residents who had died in WWII. The original capacity was just 5,000 seats. Over time, however, it has expanded to the 30,000plus seat stadium it is today.

One of the expansions to the stadium came in 1998 and was sponsored HealthSouth founder Richard M. Scrushy who made a considerable financial donation. The field, but not the stadium, came to bear his name. However, this provided Troy with a bit of a problem when problem for Troy when Scrushy was forced out of HealthSouth on accusations of financial misdeeds. He was tried, but acquitted.

In 2003 the construction costs were financed by a video rental chain called Movie Gallery, and the stadium bears that name today. The donation from the chain also afforded Troy some "Face saving" by being able to remove Scushy's name from the field. As fate would have it, on September 15, 2008, Movie Gallery creditors approved the company for a reorganization that will move them out of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. At this time the relationship with the Troy's football stadium is unknown.

The stadium played host to 2 Blue Gray Football Classics.

T-Roy - The mascot is a regular site at Troy athletic events after having made his debut in the mid 1980s. The name is the result of a campus-wide vote by the student body. In the spring of 1998, T-Roy was voted third best mascot in the nation in a national contest.

What's in a Name - Like their many fields of play, the Trojans have been known by many nicknames over their history. Beginning in the 1910s, Troy was known as the Bulldogs or Teachers. In 1922 the group was called the Trojans for the first time. However, it did not stick. In 1931 Troy hired University of Alabama grad Albert Elmore who changed the name to "Red Wave" an obvious play on the "Crimson Tide." This nickname stuck until 1973 when the student body decided to vote for a new nickname.

As the team departed campus for the 1973 road opener against Northeast Louisiana, now Louisiana-Monroe, the team did not have any nickname. Hours before the kick off that very Saturday Morning the name "Trojans" won the vote by a 2 to 1 margin. The Trojans went on to tie Northeast Louisiana 15-15.

What's in a Name Part II - Founded in 1887, what is now Troy University was first known as "State Normal School - Troy." In 1929 the school changed it's name officially to "Troy State Teachers College." This name lasted until 1957 when the school became known as "Troy College." Ten years later, in 1967, the school once again changed it's name, becoming "Troy State University." Finally, in 2004, the Board of Trustees voted to remove "State" from the title and is now known by "Troy University."
