2008 tOSU Special Teams discussion (official thread)

In all the discussion of what went right in 2002 to win that MNC and I think the most forgotten thing is how good the kicking was that year. If tOSU has an average PK and P that year, there probably would be no MNC. Anyhow, with all the blustering and gushing about the other two sides of the ball, I am surprised that more people here aren't discussing what could be Ohio State's weakness this year: kicking. Borderline performances in one kick scrimmage aren't exactly enough to raise a big alarm, but it is something to keep an eye on.

Im pretty confident with ryan and AJ comming back. From what i remember they seemed to do a good job last year.

rivals ranks aus as #2 in the kicking category

I like Saine and Herron in a sense that they will improve field position. Saine has the home-run threat. I'd imagine most kicks will go to Boom.

One of the things Tressel stated the other day was that the off-returner wasn't doing a good enough job of blocking last year. The attributes he likes best about the starting combo is that the off-returner will be capabale of providing solid blocking for the reurner.

I think of Boom as a Maurice Hall type returner. Solid returns but little home-run threat capabilties. Not a knock, becuase Maurice Hall ended up being the record holder in return yards and he didn't posses a home-run reputation either.

Just improve the field position from last year on kick-offs. It was borderline embarrassing last year.

I agree, as long as we can improve upon the Kick Off returns to get us better field position, I think we can be happy. I'm not having my expectations of Ginn back there, but hopefully they can do something of close to that magnitude. I am looking forward to seeing BSaine and Boom back there. Two quick guys that if they break a tackle or hit the hole, they could be gone. I also like Small and Hartline back there for punt returns. Hopefully Hartline can have another decent year returning punts and with Small's speed, he can also open things up a bit.

Special teams looked near perfect today. Return game was consistent and provided good field position. The kicking game was also done well. The only gripe I had was the 1 kickoff that went to the 10-15yd line on a low line drive.

I think one thing being overlooked from the loss last night was the special teams play. Punt and Kickoff returns were poor, and Pretorious missed a kick.

If we are going to rebound from this loss then the special teams have to step it up.

The shanked punt was also a crusher but in retrospect the game was already well out of reach at the time.

Just another example of how much things have changed since 2002-2003.

Special teams IMO have gotten better every game. Trapasso finally hit a bomb against Wisky if I remember correctly. Kick Off return game needs some work, and I think it starts with the personel thats back there. I'd like to see Small back there. Instead of Saine, who IMO, lacks that big burst since having his knee scoped last year

Flash and Small. That would (potentially) be scary.
