OSU Tight Ends Still Hoping for Bigger Role in Buckeye Offense
By John Porentas
Last fall when OSU football camp convened OSU tight end coach John Peterson and offensive coordinator Jim Bollman talked extensively abut a new, more important role of the tight ends in the OSU offense. It just seemed logical. Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez were both gone, as was Troy Smith. The OSU offense would likely center around Beanie Wells, and the Buckeyes were breaking in a new quarterback, Todd Boeckman. Throwing to the tight ends made sense. Safe throws, Easy throws.
It didn't quite work out that way.
Todd Boeckman emerged as a quarterback who went deep more often than not in the passing game, and that meant wide receivers Brian Robiske, Brian Hartline and Ray Small were the center of attention when the Buckeyes took to the air. Boeckman looked deep all season, and that is usually not a good thing for the number of receptions for tight ends.

Buckeyes rich with wealth of tight ends
250-pounders Nicol, Ballard often on field at the same time

By MATT MARKEY

COLUMBUS - When Ohio State pounds the football down the field and stacks up the yardage and the points, the reputations of its marquee players are enhanced. Quarterbacks, wide receivers and tailbacks collect the accolades, the media saturation, and the Heisman Trophy campaigns. But those in the spotlight readily admit that they need the guys with the scraped and scarred knuckles, those guys with the beat-up, old metal lunch buckets and the blue collar work ethic, to accomplish anything. At Ohio State, the tight ends labor in that shadow, blocking like linemen, catching passes like receivers, and comfortable in their obscurity. They play a critical position that receives precious little recognition.

This year probably has the most talented TE depth that I've ever seen at Ohio State. Some years we had a very good starter and the backups were so-so or not very good. This year we have 3 guys with experience that can do it all and freshmen coming in that will be that way.

There have been some great individuals, but I would have to agree. This is just Ballard's third year in the program and that is typically when a TE is hitting his stride.

I'm really hopeful that we will see Ballard and Nichol used more in the passing game. Ballard has excellent hands and Nichol has good hands. Because of their size and athleticism, I think that they could create some mismatches in the passing game and take some pressure off the two Brians.
