2008 Preseason and Regular season Polls

That 'ole Buckeye lover named Dennis Dodd has a new preseason #1. Along with a #1 ranking comes a indictment of the Big Ten as being soft, and the obligatory re-hash of the SEC team "ready to rip out its chunk of scarlet-and-gray flesh."

sportsline

Against the tide of an emerging preseason consensus ... against the wishes Fox, which frowns on televising re-runs in January ... against my better judgment...

Ohio State is No. 1.

...

Ohio State? Jim Tressel has coached his Bucks to three of the last six BCS title games, winning one, so let's not go into full mock mode here. However, the Big Ten has become so soft that even if Ohio State loses to USC on Sept. 13, it should be able to recover to play for the national championship.

This being Ohio State, though, there's always a chance -- make that a probability -- for a third consecutive national championship for the SEC. The Bucks are 0-9 against the SEC in bowl games and Georgia is sitting there at No. 2 ready to rip out its chunk of scarlet-and-gray flesh.

The post-spring top 25

1. Ohio State: Thirteen juniors explored the draft, only one declared -- Vernon Gholston. That should tell you that the Bucks are absolutely loaded. Mix in the roll of baby-soft Charmin known as the Big Ten schedule and this is the team to beat.

2. Georgia
3. Oklahoma
4. USC
5. Mizzou
6. Florida
7. Kansas
8. Texas
9. West Va.
10. Auburn

Actually, LSU might be better with that cancer cut out of the leadership body of the team. Sometimes the over achiever replacement is better for the team's success than the head case prima donna star who stays and infects them with his attitude. We'll know by early October.

True that.

Note to Dennis Dork: If you think that Georgia would "rip out its chunk of scarlet-and-gray flesh", and they play in such a vastly superior conference, then why don't you vote them #1 over us? Fuckin' moron...

We're ranked #1 because our schedule is soft, duh. We're not a good team. People don't keep voting for us to be #1 or anything. They just get these lists randomly with us at the top and decide that whichever SEC team we play in the title game will rip us apart.

Because then he couldn't get his shot in. We're gonna have to get used to this shit until we shut everybody up. It's infuriating, especially considering as I've said in the past how Bobby Stoops and the Spooners continue to get a pass for their postseason flubs. Boise St.? Dismantled by a WVU squad that just lost their coach? 55-19? Come on.

Think this is bad: if you have a bad off-day against USC for any reason, y'all will never hear the end of it. You'll have several years of negative polling feedback ahead. I hate to say it, but if you lose to USC they will pass you over in the one loss team derby this year because they really do buy into that crap. Ghosts of the last two years I guess. Unfair as hell, but there it is.

Absolutely agree.

We have zero room for error this year in the national opinion arena and yes, it does matter.

Don't forget back to back title game loses.

Coming off of this draft and all of the positive comments from Jets GM Mike Tannebaum regarding tOSU players combined with next years ridiculous draft class out of tOSU I think my main concern will be the lashing Tressel will take(if they lose to USC or lose in the National Title game).

Thus far, the negative commentary has been limited in regards to Tressel, but I can see the second guessers and "what have you done for me lately" crowd come out of the woodwork. The people who fail to see the 3 National Title appearances in 5 years, but instead back-to-back Title game losses.

It won't be fair, but I think the criticism will begin to mount. The "company" line out of ESPN will be that tOSU has the most players in the NFL but can't win big games and Coach won his Title with Cooper's players and Dantonio at DC. It's impossible to continually knock tOSU when they will easily have the most players in the NFL after the upcoming season. I can just see the typical ESPN idiot changing his "slow Ohio State player" to Tressel can't win the big games.

I agree, unfortunately.

It just doesn't make any sense at all that we get bashed so much for going to three title games in six years, with one win. I wouldn't mind it as much if we weren't voted into the title game(s) by the same people who bash us daily. I said this in another thread - the media acts like we forced ourselves into the title game last year. The fucking computers had a VT/LSU title game; it's the media who wanted OSU/LSU. Just go ahead and make those kids feel terrible, people who voted for us. It's their fault. I'm really glad we made it - three title games in six years is impressive. I'll take a title every six years for the rest of my life and be ridiculously happy about it. But acting like Ohio State fields a team that is going to get blown out in every big game is just getting stupid.

I'm glad I'm going into Journalism. I can give us all something worth reading. :wink2:

Salient point for me.! Anyone think any SEC or any other conference teams would take that? How negative is it when the Bucks go to that many BCS championship games and lose a couple? I always laugh like hell when any other conference fan tries to rub a NCG lose in my face, a quick "why wasn't your team there shuts them up quick.. And if they were there, a "how about 02 or 07" finishes the job.
