ESPN - Griffen ready to leave his mark on Pac-10 QBs - College Football

Griffen ready to leave his mark on Pac-10 QBs

The police came for Everson Griffen this spring, and USC coach Pete Carroll couldn't stop them from apprehending the talented sophomore defensive end. Not only were there many witnesses to what Griffen had done, but there also was film of his transgression.

Griffen just days before had "physically abused a freshman," the police said. To squelch any doubts or grumbles of protest, officers interrupted a team meeting and played the incriminating video.

Sure enough, there was Griffen -- on the football field running through a hapless block attempt from freshman offensive lineman Matt Meyer. Rumor has it that further evidence included a footprint on Meyer's forehead that matched Griffen's cleats.

Chow steers new Bruins QBs through spring test-drive

PASADENA, Calif. -- Moments before UCLA's spring scrimmage began at the Rose Bowl on April 26, offensive coordinator Norm Chow, sitting in a booth on the third level of the three-story press box, picked up the red phone that connected to the sideline and summoned quarterback Kevin Craft.

"When you come off the field," Chow said, "people are going to be coming up to you and saying, 'I'm open.' You come right to the phone. This is nothing, right? Just play. Just play. You know what to do. Just let it rip. Catch your breath and play. We're counting on you."

Craft, the Mt. San Antonio College transfer who enrolled at UCLA only weeks ago, would run the Bruins' first-team offense. Craft had fallen behind fifth-year seniors Patrick Cowan and Ben Olson in the competition to run the offense.

Washington's leading tackler Savannah academically ineligible

SEATTLE -- The Washington football team's leading tackler E.J. Savannah is academically ineligible.

He's not on the Huskies' roster Monday as they begin fall camp in Seattle, although he could be added later.

The linebacker led the team with 111 tackles last season and was Washington's defensive player of the year.

Savannah broke his arm in the offseason in a non-football related incident, but the team expected him to be ready for the start of the season.

There's a game thread for the USC-tOSU battle in September, and talk that's specific to that game belongs over there. This thread is for other talk about teams in the conference.

Can Mike Stoops finally get Arizona to make a run at the conference title?

Conference title? No - bowl game for the first time in 10 years - probably because they have such a cupcake schedule and senior qb. Stoops has done a horrible job there so I hope he stays another 5 years.

Can Arizona State protect Rudy Carpenter and survive a tougher schedule?

ASU is changing from a 7 step drop to more 3 step drops to get the ball out of Rudy's hand earlier and hopefully avoid so many sacks. ASU will run more 4 & 5 man receiver packages to help in this process. Should end up #2 in Pac-10. Can't wait for that Georgia game!

Can Cal bounce back despite losing Forsett and most of their receivers?

Cal should be solid even though they did lose some guys. Definitely not going to compete for Pac 10 title.

Will Oregon look like the bowl team that pounded USF, or the team that collapsed at the end of the regular season after losing Dennis Dixon?

Oregon will be a step under that Dixon team that was steam rolling people. Picked up a good RB to replace Stewart and their defense should be really good. QB is their question.

Will Oregon State get run over after losing the entire front seven from last year's stout defense?

They won't get run over, but they should be competitive. Nothing exciting to talk about here.

Will Stanford come anywhere close to having a moment as large as last year's win at USC?

I think Stanford will start surprising people and be quite a bit more competitive than last year. Harbaugh is starting to land some good recruits and they will be really competitive in about 2 years.

Will Rick Neuheisel and Norm Chow be able to keep their QBs upright and challenge their cross-town rival?

No, but they had a great recruiting class last year and will probably get annother pretty good class this year. They are also about 2 years out from being really competitive again.

Will Mark Sanchez or Mitch Mustain be able to lead USC back to the top of the college football landscape?

Good question, but the tOSU game will be a good indicator as to how their young guys will perform. They have a hellacious schedule this year so even if they don't win a championship, they will be there next year.

Will Jake Locker's experience be enough to make up for U-Dub's defensive problems?

No - UW needs some serious work and also play a crazy schedule this year. Locker is their team and you need more than that to win games - especially with the tough schedule they have.

Will new coach Paul Wulff be able to make Wazzu a player in the conference race anytime soon?

No - they aren't getting really good recruiting classes and don't see them getting competitive any time soon. All of the recruits in the northwest seem to be going to Oregon and UW snags a few here and there. WSU is the UofA of the north west. There's my .02

Southern California once again favorite to win Pac-10

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Pac-10 has long been a conference known for its talented quarterbacks and high-powered offenses.

That's what makes the uncertainty at quarterback so many teams are facing at the start of fall practice so unsettling to many teams.

Only Arizona State, Arizona and Washington opened fall practice with returning starters at quarterback entrenched in their jobs.

Everyone else is either breaking in a new starter such as Mark Sanchez at
Southern California, challenging a former one like the competition between Nate Longshore and Kevin Riley at California, or hoping a young one will take the job like Nate Costa at Oregon.

"I would say that the team with the experience at quarterback probably has the lead going in because the experience at that position is so important," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "When you're breaking in a new quarterback, there's always a growing process."
USC figures to be an exception to that rule.

Pac-10: Going deep to find challenger for Trojans - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com Live Scores, Standings, Stats

Pac-10: Going deep to find challenger for Trojans

The issue in the Pac-10 these days is becoming less about the dominance of Southern California and more about how the rest of the league is the Packed 9.

Since USC began its current run, only four other teams have finished second behind the Trojans or tied USC for the conference title (Washington State, California, Oregon, Arizona State). No team has been able to pass them, though. Parity exists everywhere but in Troy, where Pete Carroll has a 44-6 conference record since 2002.

Why?
