OHIO STATE INSIDER
Buckeyes land three top-rated linemen

Thursday, February 07, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Ohio State's "Block O" fell a corner short Wednesday, but nearly 20 feet and 920 pounds of offensive linemen should be enough for the Buckeyes.
West Virginia's Josh Jenkins, the latest hopeful targeted to complete an OSU O-line foursome, announced he was staying with the in-state Mountaineers on National Signing Day. However, the Buckeyes landed three of the top 13 linemen, according to Rivals.com, by signing Dublin Coffman's Mike Adams, Orlando Fla.'s Michael Brewster and J.B Shugarts of Klein, Texas, who comes from the same high school as former OSU cornerback Ashton Youboty.
Brewster and Shugarts enrolled at Ohio State in January, are rooming together and showed up at Jim Tressel's news conference in ill-fitting scarlet jerseys, ready to go to work.

Ohio State's recruiting class is heavy on offensive lineman
Thursday, February 7, 2008

COLUMBUS Terrelle Pryor will have something going for him if he does choose Ohio State.

What quarterback wouldn't want a top-flight offensive line in front of him?

While Pryor chose to delay his college decision on national signing day, the Buckeyes were officially welcoming what is believed to be the best offensive line recruiting class since Jim Tressel became head coach.

Tackles Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts and center Michael Brewster were among 19 players Ohio State signed Wednesday. The signings were expected, as all three committed to the Buckeyes last spring.

"It all starts with those guys up front," Tressel said. "They're not only going to be the kind of guys that will do a great job in the offensive trenches, but they happen to be the ones that kind of spearheaded the momentum of this recruiting class."

All three players received five stars from Scout.com, the Web site's highest rating. Brewster and Adams were given five stars by Rivals.com. Shugarts was a four-star selection.

"After next year we'll graduate quite a few offensive linemen, so we've got three real good ones coming," said Brewster, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound Orlando, Fla., native.

Shugarts, a 6-8, 300-pounder from Klein, Texas, is real excited to be part of a class that includes Brewster and Adams.

Tressel excited about 19 OSU recruits
3 giant offensive linemen in mix

COLUMBUS - Ohio State coach Jim Tressel laid out a recruiting class of 19 players yesterday - a diverse group that he said covers just about every position on the field, and one that he expects to have an immediate and long-lasting impact on the Buckeyes' program. "We wanted to get - like we do every year - a little bit of everything," Tressel said. "If you look at the whole class, we feel as if it's exactly what we needed." But ? "But we're still recruiting, and that's about all we're allowed to say about that. We're still recruiting at the quarterback position. I think we're OK saying that." The Buckeyes have been in the sweepstakes to land No. 1 quarterback prospect Terrelle Pryor from Pennsylvania, who said yesterday he was not yet ready to name his school of choice. Tressel admitted his OSU class lacks only that - a quarterback.

Tressel likes "special class"
Jim Naveau - Feb. 7th, 2008
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel called the 19 recruits the Buckeyes signed on Wednesday ?a special class.?

But he dropped some hints he?s still hoping it could get a little more special in the next few days.

The new group of Buckeyes is heavy on highly rated offensive linemen, defensive linemen, defensive backs and wide receivers.

Three offensive linemen ? Mike Adams of Dublin Coffman, Michael Brewster of Orlando, Fla., and J.B. Shugarts of Klein, Texas ? are among the most prominent names in the group. All three have been rated among the top 100 recruits nationally by several scouting services.

Nine of the recruits are from Ohio, four are from Florida and one each is from Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas.

But the big question still hovering over Ohio State?s recruiting class, along with those of Michigan, Penn State and maybe Oregon, is what quarterback Terrelle Pryor will do.

Pryor, rated the No. 1 recruit in the country and who was rumored to be favoring Ohio State, said Wednesday he will take more time to decide where he will play next year.

Toni Pryor, left, said she sensed her son Terrelle, right, felt some sense of relief when he decided to delay his choice of college.

The Ohio State football team held a feel-good family gathering yesterday, even as one chair remained empty. The crowd that gathered in the team meeting room of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for national signing day included several brand-new Buckeyes, plus moms, dads, nieces and grandparents.
They celebrated 19 players signing letters of intent and spoke of how close-knit the group feels already.
"Not only is the class a great class of young men, the parents are amazing," said Jenny Brewster, mother of offensive lineman Michael Brewster.
Her voice quivered.
"We're having a great time together," she said. "We've all gotten to know each other through this whole process, and it's just a dream come true and we're so happy to be here."
Coach Jim Tressel wasn't quite as emotional, even though he landed what recruiting analysts are calling his best class since 2002. Scout.com ranks it No. 7 nationally and Rivals.com has it No. 8.

Dublin Coffman football players, from left, Jake Stoneburner, Trey Fairchild, Zack Stoudt, Mike Adams, Steve Gardiner and Ohio State-bound soccer player Colleen Brady sport ball caps of their college teams after signing national letters of intent.

It is with great pride and excitement that a high school announces a football player will sign a national letter of intent to play for a Division I college. A room is set up to accommodate media, students, teachers, administrators and parents, and sometimes there are enough doughnuts to get everyone counting calories.
What Dublin Coffman needed yesterday was an airplane hanger to fit everyone inside. It was a bull market for Shamrocks.

Newest recruits fill holes for OSU Graduations will hit hard on offensive line following next season
By George M. Thomas

COLUMBUS: It's well and good that Ohio State's recruiting class ranks so highly with the national college football gurus, but all that really matters is how the Buckeyes met their immediate and long-term needs. That way coach Jim Tressel can continue to reload as opposed to rebuild.
Shrewd recruiting allowed last year's junior-laden team to march to the BCS National Championship Game, the second consecutive appearance for OSU. With those players leaving after next season, Tressel and his coaching staff again did a remarkable job of selling the program in and out of the state while addressing team needs. Here's how they did listed by priority:

Ohio State: A
Seven ESPN 150 prospects
The Buckeyes brought in the top class in the Big Ten. Led by offensive linemen Michael Brewster (Orlando/Edgewater), Mike Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Coffman) and J.B. Shugarts (Spring, Texas/Klein), the Buckeyes filled big needs up front. Linebackers Etienne Sabino (Miami/Dr. Krop) and Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pa./Trinity) are the top two inside linebackers in the country, infusing premium talent and youth at another needed position.

Good as far as it goes, but what it doesn't point out is how Tressel and staff have done an outstanding job of giving freshman and sophomores plenty of PT (and PT in important games, not just mop up time) prior to their starting... unlike, oh for instance, the strategic advantage machine in the school next to the old Studebaker plant.

When I read some of the recruits comments I sense that they understand that they are being brought in to play a part, not wait around until their seniors.

What now?

Before getting up in front of a microphone and talking about his 2008 recruiting class Wednesday, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was casually chatting with a few reporters. He remarked that the high school mascot of one of the new signees, Keith Wells of Gainesville, Ga., was the Red Elephants.
I said, "Well, at least it's not the Red Herrings." I was thinking that was exactly what this signing-day press conference felt like -- something to distract us from the main event over in Jeannette, Pa.
Or maybe the Terrelle Pryor press conference was the red herring. Either way, what a weird day. Several reporters actually attended both press conferences, hoofing it back from Pa. in time to slide into their seats at the Woody Hayes Center meeting room about 10 minutes into Tressel's rundown of each recruit.
I don't know what wisdom I can add to the Pryor saga. He may have the purest intentions, but I'm getting increasingly wary of this circus. I'll leave it at that.
Not being a recruitnik, I don't click on those Internet highlight films of high school players, so Wednesday was my first look at the skills of the 19 OSU signees.
I'm no scout, but I'll give you a few quick impressions:
-- Lineman Michael Brewster called Florida defensive back Travis Howard, "the steal of the class" and I might agree. He's 6-1 and well built, he looked like a man among boys on the tape. He just seemed to know where to go a step before everyone else.
-- I really liked what I saw of defensive lineman Garrett Goebel. A big guy, but not fat, and he had good agility. He looks like a prototype modern defensive tackle. You have to love those wrestlers on the d-line, too.
-- Jake Stoneburner could be the next Jeff Samar-what'shisname (the former Notre Dame kid). Obviously, he's tall (6-5) but he also a knack for going up and finding the ball. And then he runs well.
-- Speaking of Brewster, he has a nastiness that caught my eye. He doesn't just block people, he keeps going after them until they're face-down in the dirt. And then he falls on them. I like it.
