This week unfolded as predicted, with Ohio State, Bowling Green, and Minnesota all notching wins Saturday in the Midwest Premier League.
Ohio State garnered a 20-12 W against Indiana in what was agreed upon as an ill-refereed game. Approximately 50 penalties were called in total against both sides.
The refereeing transformed OSU's game plan, forcing them to keep it in the forwards due to questionable calls against their backline, said Tom Rooney head coach of the Buckeyes. "We were able to overcome it this week, unlike last week."
The halftime score was 5-0 in favor of Indiana, until OSU decided to change-up and use their forwards. Dave Knab began the scoring trend in the second half, only to be slowed down when the Buckeyes' captain was penalized for discussing the offside call made by the ref.
Despite the slowdown, Indiana came back to regain the lead, but Ohio State had a different plan: #6 Chad Cochran scored off a series of forward balls bringing the score to 12-10.
However the tides shifted, with Knab scoring again at the 25 minute mark and Gareth Willat bringing the team to an eight point lead where they would stay to win the game.
Ohio State punched its ticket to the next round of the playoffs with a 27-14 decision against Illinois. The Buckeyes trailed 12-14 at halftime after jumping out to a 12-0 lead after 27 minutes only to see Illinois hit the front with two tries of their own.
In a game in which there were numerous penalties, OSU ran in four tries by Josh Barkhurst,Chad Cochran, Micky Franco, and Zach Hribar. Alex Gutkoski slotted two conversions and a penalty goal to round out the scoring.
"We still are taking moments off but we're at least putting streaks together," Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told ARN.
