ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins added thier first free agent of the offseason on Friday, signing receiver and former Pro Bowl kick returner Jerome Mathis.

Mathis made the Pro Bowl as a returner with the Houston Texans in 2005, but he was injured for most of the last two seasons. He became a free agent this year when the Texans opted not to make him a qualifying offer at the end of the season.

As a rookie in 2005, Mathis led the NFL in kickoff return touchdowns (two) and yardage (1,542) on 54 returns. He has six career receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Familiar face: Vikes bring back Frerotte to protect, push Jackson
The Minnesota Vikings have signed quarterback Gus Frerotte -- again.

Frerotte's contract was finalized Tuesday. The 14-year veteran served as Daunte Culpepper's backup for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and now he's in line to do the same for incumbent Tarvaris Jackson.

The Vikings were looking for more polish at the position, and possibly someone to push Jackson for the job. Brooks Bollinger and Kelly Holcomb failed to produce when Jackson was injured, leaving coach Brad Childress without a reliable alternative when Jackson was struggling.

Saints sign cornerback Glenn

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints have signed free agent Aaron Glenn, hoping the veteran cornerback can shore up a shoddy pass defense.

Glenn, a 14-year veteran and former first-round draft pick who started four games for Jacksonville in 2007, has 41 career interceptions, six of them for touchdowns. He ranks fifth among active interception leaders in the NFL.

Vikings' strong defensive line just got much stronger.. they're going to be insanely good if they can find a passing game.

ESPN - Sources: Chiefs agree to send franchise player Allen to Vikes - NFL

Jared Allen, the franchise player for the Kansas City Chiefs, is heading to a new franchise, the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple sources.

Late Tuesday night, the Chiefs and the Vikings reached an agreement on a trade package, and at roughly the same time, Allen reached an agreement in principle on a contract with the Vikings. Upon reaching the contract agreement, Allen headed to the airport and left for Minnesota.

Sources said the Vikings included a second third-round pick (No. 73) in the 2008 draft to get the deal done. They had been offering a No. 1 pick (17th in the first round) and a No. 3 (No. 82). The teams also swapped spots in the sixth round with the Vikings getting a better spot in the sixth round, sources said.

Seahawks cut running back, former MVP Alexander

SEATTLE -- From MVP to vilified to unemployed in a little more than two years.

Shaun Alexander's free fall in Seattle was completed Tuesday when the Seahawks cut the running back who led them to their only Super Bowl appearance in 2006 and was rewarded soon after with a $62 million contract.

For Alexander, the two seasons since he received that eight-year deal have been filled with injuries, ineffectiveness and incessant boos.

"Yeah, it's sad, really," Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said while announcing the defending four-time NFC West champions released Alexander unconditionally, hours after the running back passed a physical.

ESPN - Sources: Cowboys agree on deal to acquire Pacman from Titans - NFL

The Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans have agreed in principle on a trade for suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Dallas will send its fourth-round pick in Saturday's draft to the Titans for Jones.

There are also conditions attached to the trade related to Jones being reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and how much he plays for the Cowboys. If he plays a significant amount of time in 2008, the Titans will get an additional pick from the Cowboys in 2009.

If he doesn't get reinstated by the NFL, the Titans will send an undisclosed 2009 draft pick back to the Cowboys.
Sucks to see that this guy will make money playing football. Good deal for Dallas if he doesn't act like a fool.

With McFadden in tow, Raiders cut ties with Rhodes

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders released running back Dominic Rhodes on Monday, two days after using their top draft pick to take big-play back Darren McFadden.

Oakland had a glut at running back after the draft and began addressing it almost immediately by announcing the team cut ties with Rhodes. The Raiders still have two backs with 1,000-yard seasons on their roster in Justin Fargas and LaMont Jordan, as well as last year's fourth-round pick Michael Bush.

Rhodes signed a two-year contract with the Raiders last offseason after helping Indianapolis win the Super Bowl. He restructured his contract earlier this offseason and was expected to share the rushing load with Fargas before McFadden was drafted.

Panthers reach deal with veteran Darwin Walker to fill DT void

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers added depth on their defensive line by agreeing to a one-year deal with free agent Darwin Walker.

Walker's agent, Al Irby, confirmed the deal Monday. The Chicago Bears let Walker go in February.

Walker played in 11 games with seven starts in an injury-plagued season with Chicago in 2007. He finished with 17 tackles and one sack. Before that, Walker was a five-year starter in Philadelphia.

The Panthers have little depth at defensive tackle after trading Kris Jenkins in the offseason. Sixth-round pick Nick Hayden of Louisville was the only defensive linemen the Panthers took in last weekend's draft.
