Winthop beats UNC-Asheville to claim fourth straight NCAA bid

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- New coach, same result for Winthrop. Another NCAA tournament trip for the dangerous midmajor program.

Michael Jenkins tied a Big South championship game record with 33 points and Winthrop overcame mammoth 7-foot-7 Kenny George's dominance inside to beat UNC Asheville 66-48 Saturday for its fourth straight league title.

Jenkins hit 6 of 9 3-pointers and keyed two second-half spurts that put it away for the Eagles (22-11), whose eighth NCAA tournament berth in 10 years was likely their most difficult to attain.

I am a student at Winthrop University.

They are a good basketball team with great chemistry. Their starting point guard, DeAndre Adams, died in a car accident before the season. They also lost their head coach to Wichita State.

Yet, they still found a way to beat UNC-Asheville who swept them during the season.

that is b/c he is 7'7" tall and everyone else was 6'8" or shorter. He didn't exactly dominate. Had only 13 points I think and he doesn't move very well either. I didn't see the final score but I turned it off and his team was also down by 16. I've seen the guy twice now this year (the other was against UNC when Hansborough went right over top of him) and I think the guy is more circus-act than anything else.

Dansby scores 16 to lead Belmont to third consecutive NCAA bid

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Belmont coach Rick Byrd put a sign outside his team's locker room at the beginning of the season that read "Make History."

The Bruins earned their place in the record books Saturday night.

Shane Dansby scored 16 points to help send Belmont to its third straight NCAA Tournament with a 79-61 victory over Jacksonville, becoming the first team in league history to win three consecutive Atlantic Sun tournament titles.

Austin Peay drops Tennessee State to win fourth OVC championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Austin Peay Governors gathered in a circle at midcourt and started dancing. As Todd Babington sliced off a piece of the net to wear around his right ear, he cut the knuckle on his left index finger.

It's a celebration the Governors missed a year ago, and they aren't about to let anything stop them from partying now.

"I'm going to wear this for a while," Babington said of his new accessory.

He scored 24 points, and Austin Peay earned its sixth NCAA Tournament berth and first since 2003 by beating Tennessee State 82-64 on Saturday for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship.
