2008 College (non-Big Ten) Baseball

Didn't feel right derailing the Big Ten thread by posting about LSU in it, so here's a thread for college updates not involving the Big Ten.

We're off to a good start (3-1). Our SP had a rough 6th inning in the one loss to Indiana. Also had a rough inning in the 8th our releivers) the night before. Other than that, pitching and defense have been pretty solid (only 2 errors so-far). I'm glad to see that, since those have been our achilles heel the last couple of years.

If we can keep averaging 6 runs per game like this, we should do well. Hopefully, we'll finish higher than our predicted 5th in the West.

I think you guys are going in the right direction. Paul Mainieri is a good coach, and I think he was a good choice when they let smoke laval go. Good luck in the west year. It looks like Ole Miss is going to have a strong team again this year.

A bucket of warm piss would have been an upgrade from Smoke.

I can't believe that guy holds a grudge against LSU for firing him after taking the most nation's successful College Baseball program of the previous decade or so, and managing to not finish closer to the bottom of the SEC than the top. Dude was handed a fully loaded Rolls Royce, and returned a rusted Yugo with burn holes in the upholstery.

I assume you keep an eye on the rest of the SEC...just how good is Ole Miss?

Could they be the team to beat in the SEC?

Somewhat (meaning I really only pay attention to the standings).

Ole Miss has been a really good regular season team for a couple years now. They could and probably should win the SEC this year. But they still need to learn how to win in the post season. By now, they should have made at least one trip to Omaha, but haven't yet. Maybe this is their year.

Edit: We won again tonight (Miss Valley St.) 9-1. 5 guys combined to give up only 5 hits. Not bad. All in front of a whopping 227 people. That number would have been laughed at when Skip was still running the show.

Michigan is getting their arses handed to em' by Arizona State. Its 15-4 in the top of the 8th. Michigan threw Wilson instead of Putnam.

ASU didnt throw their #1 either.

Way to represent the B10 scUM bags..

Living in Phoenix I've had the opportunity to see the Sun Devils up close and personal. I even had the opportunity to have one of the SP as a patient and get some inside info on them this season. From what he says and explains his bias going in, the pitching staff is maybe the best top-to-bottom in the country and at least 5 future major leaguers are there. Thats nasty. They have the lead for the Pac-10 race I would say and a possible #1 seed going into the CWS this season. Now all this hinges on guys living up to their potential and staying healthy but to start the season where they are looks pretty dang daunting for opposing teams. Michigan losing that bad is a little surprising but I figured it might be 9-3 or 8-4 somewhere in there. If ASU puts up offense like that this year, might as well hand them the championship now.

Yea, ASU is looking like the best team so far

They have played 3 ranked teams (Oregon State, Vanderbilt And Michigan) and beat them all by 10+ runs

Holy crap! SC had a runner on 2nd with 2 outs. The batter hits it out to shallow center, where the CF makes a dive at the ball. He seems to get it in his glove, but the ball goes flying out as soon as he hits the ground. SC scores a run on the play. The Southern coach comes out to argue, of course. Then they make one pitch to the next batter.

All of a sudden, the ump decides to change the previous play to a catch, taking the run off the board and ending the inning. SC coach flips out and gets tossed. How the hell can you reverse a call AFTER another pitch has been thrown?
