Muschamp brings intensity, impressive resume to Texas' defense

AUSTIN, Texas -- Will Muschamp didn't get his wish. He got hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube, but he didn't get his wish.

The desire of Auburn's defensive coordinator in the video was to, "Shut these mother------ out." The mofos being Arkansas during a 9-7 Tigers' victory. The embarrassment being Muschamp's when the TV clip of his fired-up sideline rant went viral. Suddenly, www stood for Worldwide Will.

"It's amazing because of the YouTube situation how many Baptist preachers I've had to answer to," said Muschamp, sitting in his new office that overlooks the Royal-Memorial Stadium field.

"The year before (Arkansas) had rushed 270 yards and at that point in the game they had about 28, so I was kind of happy."

Mizzou's Alexander to undergo knee surgery

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri linebacker Van Alexander will have surgery Monday after suffering a knee injury in practice.

Alexander tore his right anterior cruciate ligament after intercepting a Chase Daniel pass on the final play of practice on Thursday. The senior-to-be, who started eight games last season at strongside linebacker, will miss the rest of spring practice but is expected to be healthy when the Tigers open the 2008 season on Aug. 30 against Illinois in St. Louis.

Daniel, Tigers focused on winning Big 12 championship

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Any signs that complacency might have affected Chase Daniel were quickly erased early in Missouri's spring practice.

During a routine practice in which the Tigers' defense had made one too many stops to suit him, Missouri's senior quarterback was in coach Gary Pinkel's ear for most of the last few periods of their work that day.

"He was telling me, 'Coach, we've got to put the ball on the 30-yard line, offense versus defense. We've got to do it. We've got to do it,'" Pinkel said.

Big 12 roundup: Sooners, Jayhawks struggle offensively in spring games

Spring games typically are vanilla affairs that don't feature much in the way of diverse offensive philosophy. In addition, defenses have seen offenses for the entire spring and know every nuance and snap count of the quarterbacks they are facing.

That familiarity sometimes breeds strong defensive performances, but still does not entirely explain the offensive struggles seen at both Oklahoma and Kansas during their respective spring games.

Oklahoma's defense dominated the offense in the Sooners' Red-White game, producing six interceptions including three returns for touchdowns. The team comprised of the first-team offense and second-team defense claimed a 69-40 victory in a scoring system that awarded points for many accomplishments ranging from long plays to forced punts.

More than 80,000 watch spring game for Pelini's rebuilding Huskers

LINCOLN, Neb. -- After an agonizing end to the Bill Callahan era, Nebraska fans couldn't wait to see what Bo Pelini's Cornhuskers had to offer.

Nebraska's first spring game under the new coach drew a school-record crowd of 80,149, with some tickets reportedly selling for upward of $100 early in the week.

The Reds beat the Whites 24-14 in a scrimmage where the first- and second-stringers were spread across both squads to make things competitive.

The crowd was the second largest for a spring game in college football history behind the 92,138 that showed up at Alabama last spring. The scrimmage was declared a sellout 10 days before, and some ticket brokers were finding buyers willing to pay 10 times the face value of $10 for a reserved seat.

Eccentric Leach ready to lead Red Raiders to ultimate treasure

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach ripped the plastic wrapper from his newest pirate flag and carefully unfolded it to reveal an image of a blood-red skeleton on a black background.

"It's kind of a semi-perfect Red Raider flag, but he's not my favorite guy," Leach said of Edward Low, the notorious 18th-century pirate who was known to savagely torture his victims before killing them. "But can't you imagine? There's some guy sitting on the ship deck, who has had way too much rum to drink, saying, 'Here, give me some red paint; I'll fix it up!'"

Can't you imagine Leach standing on the field at Dolphin Stadium in Miami on the night of Jan. 8, holding a Waterford crystal trophy high above his head, smiling at the rest of the college football world with an eat-you-know-what grin?

Oklahoma QB Nichol plans to transfer

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? Third-string quarterback Keith Nichol plans to transfer from Oklahoma after just one season.
Sooners coach Bob Stoops announced Friday that Nichol would not be returning.

"We had a good conversation with Keith and certainly understand his desire to seek an opportunity in another program," Stoops said in a statement. "He knows that we are supportive of him under any circumstance, whether it's here or at a different school. We want what's best for him."

Nichol initially committed to Michigan State, but then enrolled at Oklahoma last January to get an early jump on the quarterback competition. Sam Bradford eventually won the starting job and became the nation's top-rated passer last season.

Big 12 commish proposes no redshirt, more eligibility

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe has repeatedly heard football coaches complain about the attrition caused by dwindling scholarship limits and longer seasons. And he wants to do something about it.

Beebe has proposed a plan that would provide five years of eligibility for college football players. He hopes to gain support before eventually taking his idea to the NCAA Management Council for action.

The proposal would end redshirting in college football and cease the current practice of four seasons of eligibility during a five-year window.

Mangino gets 2-year extension, raise from Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kansas gave coach Mark Mangino a raise and extended his contract two years Tuesday, amending his deal to up his compensation to $2.3 million per year.

The contract now runs through 2012.

Mangino, entering his seventh year at Kansas, was The Associated Press Coach of the Year last season. The Jayhawks went 12-1, including a 24-21 victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Kansas' first BCS bowl victory.

Mangino's new deal will pay him $1,770,100 per year for professional services rendered, an increase of $500,000. Those services could include educational, public relations and promotional duties assigned by the athletic director.

Mangino's annual salary of $229,900 remains the same, though he could get additional incentives up to $675,000 in any given year. Mangino also will receive a retention payment of $1.5 million if he remains head coach at Kansas through the end of his contract.
