2007 Results, 2008 Expectations

Rock, Flag, and Eagle
Lately, a question has come to my mind. Rivalries and hatred for teams aside, what was the most quality OSU came away from the 2007 season with?

Was it Wisconsin missing their top two running backs?

Was it Penn State, quarterbacked by Anthony Morelli and having just dismissed their starting running back, Austin Scott?

Was it Michigan with a banged up Michael Hart and a Chad Henne that couldn't even play more than half the game?

The more I look back on it, the more grateful I am for the 11-2 record we compiled last year. A lot of things had to fall into place (luck with injuries not the least of them) for that to happen, and I'm not too sure in most other years if that was an 11-2 team. I think it was more like a 10-3 or 9-4 team in a strong year for the Big 10.

But people don't look back on last year's team as a 10-3 or 9-4 team. They see an outright Big Ten champ that played for the MNC. They see that same team returning 19 starters. With those two things combined, people want-- almost expect --to see 11-2 grow into 13-0. But if this were a 9-4 team coming back, people would be thrilled with 11-2 and a BCS bowl victory.

I know attitude has been much talked about recently as a cause for the "slow start". I'm sure it is a large factor. But is it possible the media, and we as fans, somewhat overrated this Buckeye team?

This isn't to say that the Bucks aren't a great team. But all we know about this team is the results they produce on the field, and this team hasn't beaten another great team since Troy Smith was quarterbacking the Bucks.

Maybe we should applaud the coaching staff for keeping such a steady hand through these past two seasons, and beating nearly everyone that they were supposed to beat, which is more than you can say for 95% of the other top schools out there. Instead we're so caught up in our own expectations that we blame play-calling for games we weren't favored to win in? I'm proud to have Jim Tressel as the coach of my alma mater. And if he wants to call plays, he's earned that right.

The best part of this whole situation? As has been stated on the board many times, half of the 5-star prospects on this team are true freshman. And the 2009 class isn't far off. The future is very bright for the Buckeyes. Maybe when September 12th, 2009, we'll be 7 point favorites. We'll see who's still complaining about the play-calling then.

Unequivocally, it was...

Personally, I couldn't care if they were all walking wounded. I want a win at Michigan first and foremost. Thus, each one makes me proud.

Likewise.

Quite a bit of food for thought. I definitely appreciate reading the sentiment!!!

This is why I said rivalries and hatred aside. I just meant in terms of the quality of the opposition. That Michigan team in November was not a great team. If we had played the Michigan team that played Florida, we would have struggled a considerable amount more.

I know you did. I just can't remove that. I really it short changes what you were looking for; however, we've seen in the last week what can happen with an inferior-talented team when they want it. OSU-UM doesn't necessarily mean talent as much as desire. Last year, in that weather, and that stadium, OSU wanted it more than anything else that year. That's how I felt about it.

I'm not big on hypotheticals; therefore, I don't have a response.

I definitely agree... and still strugled to say we were top 5 last year, top 10 yes, but top 5 is stretching it.

The problem with looking at the season like that, this year, who will the big win be?

-We got waxed by the then #1 team, didn't even put up a fight, who has fallen in rankings.
-Our next ranked team we play is Wisc, who is #17, and a loss to us will drop them out of the top 25.
-Purdue will unranked
-MSU could be top 25, but another loss to us will drop them out
-PSU if they get by Wisc in Camp Randall will be top 5, so that is a marquee win, if they lose that or michigan, they would be top 25 at the end with a loss to us, but nothing special
-NW could be 8-1 when they face us, but it's still NW
-Illinois is decent, but not going to be top 25
-And another unranked Michigan team, maybe top 25 with some more suprise wins, but nothing good.

Again, this year I will be happy with winning out taking another big te(leve)n championship, going to the rose bowl w/ a healthy beanie and pryor running the show.

I agree. We definetly overachieved last year...Beanie made us a very good team but I still think we were a border line BCS contender last year, not border line title game contender (which is A OK). Conversely, our expectations of them for this year were way to high. After the Washington game last year our confidence was sparked and we were on a roll, which caused us to play better than we were imo, which is great. As JT says in The Winners Manual, a winning attitude is contagious and almost random. This year just hasn't been the same, partially due to talent, partially to due with the attitude of the team. Even at that, you do bring up some good points about our competition. Great read.

Austin Scott wasn't their best running back anyway. Kinlaw was and he finished with 1,300+ yards rushing.

That PSU win was a good one. Everyone seemed to be on their game.
