High School 2007 Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge

I love this concept, but it puts Ohio in a tough spot. How's a team like Northmont (just for example) supposed to compete with the best team from Maryland. Each team coming to ohio is one of that state's best, while Ohio has to put up 8 teams by itself. There just aren't enough great teams in Ohio.

I hope they are able to get some of these games on nat'l television. There are a few I would love to watch.

It depends on the game... on paper Moeller didn't match up with #3 Byrnes (with superstar QB Willie Korn and some other bcs-bound seniors), but if not for a botched XP call, it would have gone to OT.

Last year, #8 St. X was talented, but #3 lakeland had like 9 bcs-bound seniors, including 7 to UF (2 were 5-stars). That went to OT as well.

Glenville vs. Polyis probably the best matchup on that sheet...I can't wait to see how they match up. Last year the event went very well and I enjoyed myself for the games at Nippert. I highly suggest it for anyone who can make it.

The fan atmosphere was great... lakeland & byrnes had a great showing of fans, and the local cinci student sections cheered each other on, even the rivals.

Colerain v. Hoover could be very interesting.
Omaha...I agree with you. I wish X were playing Independence...I don't think I could stomach watching Elder get dismantled again.

Don't look for the four-story mural of Kirk Herbstreit at the Ohio vs. USA Challenge this fall.
The massive billboard adorned the back of the end zone at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium. Herbstreit, an ESPN and ABC college football analyst and former Centerville High School standout, has backpedaled, taking his name off the third annual high school football event that he founded.

The third annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge high school football event will bear the name of the former Ohio State quarterback, contrary to a report in the Dayton Daily News Monday which said the ESPN and ABC college football analyst had withdrawn his name for the event he created.
Event organizers denied the report and said the name of the event would not change.
Plans for the event, which features most of the Cincinnati area's top teams, are moving forward, event president Josh Johnston said.
The event is scheduled for Labor Day weekend with games at UC's Nippert Stadium.

Is Northmont one of the more well known teams in Ohio? No, but the thing with the Herbie is that they want all parts of the state represented. Personally, I have no problem with that. I think that it's great for the state of Ohio because it allows some programs to make a name for themselves. With that being said, Ohio could easily put 8 teams in the Herbie that could bang with anybody anywhere. Not that Northmont couldn't, especially since I'm not going to question what they are capable of, but the following teams aren't scheduled to be in this year's Herbie.

Cleveland St. Ignatius: 9 state titles, perenial power
Hilliard Davidson: 2006 state champ
Mentor: 2006 Division 1 runner up, early favorite for 2007
Warren Harding: 2 state titles; perenial power
Lakewood St. Edward: perenial power
Steubenville: 3 state titles; currently on a 30 game winning streak
Massillon: no explanation needed
the MAC schools (Coldwater, St. Henry, Versailles, etc.): Best small school conference in the country.


Like I said, I'm more than happy with what Ohio has in the Herbie lineup. You can't expect all of Ohio's best programs to have the same open date to accomodate an event like this. With that being said, I think that the organizers are doing a great job of getting the programs that they have. Heck, nobody gave Moeller, who wasn't even been a top 3 team in Cincinnati last season, a fighting chance against Byrnes last season, and the same could probably be said about Hilliard Davidson against Philly St. Joseph Prep. Massillon beat a team from Arizona that went at least 4 years without losing. While St. Eds ran the score up on the best team from Arkansas, Warren Harding, who has never particpated in the Herbie, kept them out of the end zone in week 12. They play a different breed of football in Ohio. Going back to Moeller, they play schools like Ignatius, St. Eds, St. Xavier, Colerain, and Elder all year, and I seriously doubt that there are too many teams if any that have to play competition like that all year. Ohio will be fine, and hopefully the Herbie will continue to be successful so that more teams will have an opportunity to participate. If the worst that the Herbie can do is to get programs like Colerain, St. X, Glenville, Moeller, & McKinley to participate against teams like Hoover, Long Beach Poly, Union, & DeMatha, then I'm not going to complain about this event.

I'm with Worm here. An event like this, win or lose, is nothing but good for Ohio High School Football. There are a handful of states in the nation which could have such a challenge. Ohio, California, Florida, Texas, maybe Louisiana and Pennsylvania... Georgia?

Glad that Herbstreit is keeping his name on this event. Like others it seems to me that this a unique pre-season series and could become over time a signature opener for HS football.

Hamilton did not go four years without losing, or anything close, but the Huskies are very good especially for out here. There are a bunch of high-D1 kids on that team.

Is there any credence to the rumor that the folks who run this event nearly ran it into the ground? As I understand it, many promises were not kept by promoters and several hotel and restaraunts went unpaid, putting Herbie's good name at stake. Does anyone know who operates this event?
