Behind the Numbers
It doesn't require in-depth analysis to know how these teams stack up. You don't have to be a genius like Al Gore to see that.

It has been suggested that Al Gore invented the internet. As I use data gathered from the internet one wonders if by extension Al Gore invented statistical analysis.

The Lighter Side
Purdue proved a point on Saturday. The only thing that makes your team getting exposed on national TV worse is your team getting exposed on national TV with the shame of an ill-conceived color out also being fully documented. Look, Purdue, if you're going to do a color out, you should use your off color, puke gold, not black - especially for a night game. Black blends in nicely with the evening, providing a favorable backdrop for your road opponent (wearing white) to see each other as well as the ball. There's a reason why the "hitters eye" in baseball is very often a jet black section in dead center, and it's because it makes finding the ball easier. Granted, a baseball is white and a football brown, but the point is, you're helping the old rods and cones not hurting them. If fans wearing the same color has a point, I would think it's that ... visual disruption. Likewise, if you're going to do a color out, you should never in a billion years allow nearly a third of your stadium to be filled with opposing fans. And finally, while not necessarily color out related per se, at no time should you allow the opposition fans to dominate your own stadium with their own cheers. Coming back from commercial, TV viewers hear "Ohhhhhh ... Ayyyychhhhh ... Eyyyyeeeee ... Ohhhhhh" while you and your Johnny Cash wanna be buddies sit there with your heads buried in your palms. You look ridiculous. You're supposed to be creating a hostile environment, and you end up giving your opposition a home game by proxy. Here is a bit of free advice, drop the gimmicks and root for your team as rabidly as you can. Make noise. I wouldn't normally advocate this, but jiggle your car keys if you have to. Wearing the same color as everyone else should be icing on the home-field advantage cake, and not an end in and of itself.

23 - 7. I'm not sure why the Buckeyes decided to use Todd Boeckman as a punter three times, but he did pretty well. On three attempts, he pinned the Boilermakers inside their own 5 twice. Meanwhile, when it mattered, the Boilermakers were held to 140 yards total offense. One-hundred-forty. Can you believe that? That's some 350 yards below Purdue's average coming in to the game. While two fourth quarter drives (one of 43 and one of 88) ended up making Purdue's final passing yardage seem OK, the plain fact is this offense couldn't do anything all night. It's lucky for Purdue that Anderson Russell hasn't been introduced to Moises Alou for hand softening technique tips, or it would have been much much worse.

On the national scene, what a couple of weeks. For successive weeks now, top 10 teams have folded faster than a 7 - 2 off-suited Dan Harrington. This week's chief victim was USC. How a team like SC can let a team who goes by the singular rather than plural (Cardinal) and which is coached by a guy who made your own coach mad with pre-season commentaries beat them is astonishing. Beaten by 40 point dogs. Unreal. It's a good thing LenDale White is in the NFL or his post-practice jumping off a building Halloween prank wouldn't have been a prank at all. Maybe you should organize a color out for your next game. On second thought, maybe you should take down those giant cardboard jerseys you fill a quarter of your stadium with and put some fans in the seats. Just a thought.

After the most successful 0 - 5 start in Notre Dame, history, the Irish re-established themselves as national powerhouse, taking another step towards solidifying its strangle-hold on the Independent Conference's BCS bid. Behind the amazing efforts of dual threat quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who established a new single game personal best record for rushing touchdowns (1) while also throwing for the third most yards in any game in his career (84), the Domers exerted their will over a UCLA team considered by some to be the number one team in the land. Notre Dame nearly out-gained the high octane Bruins, even when the Bruins threw the Irish a curve by changing quarterbacks mid-contest when Drew Olson was injured. Nonetheless, the stoic Irish defense stepped up to the challenge, limiting the phenomenal McLeod Bethel-Thompson to a career worst 12 of 28 passing for career low 139 yards. In a testament to how well Notre Dame is coached, the Irish intercepted the Davey O'Brien Award eligible Bethel-Thompson four times. This, even though Notre Dame was without the benefit of any film on him while preparing for the clash earlier in the week. Likewise, Kahlil Bell's Heisman campaign took a serious hit as he was kept under 70 yards rushing, and for only the third time this year, kept out of the end zone. The Irish welcome the 4th rated Boston College Eagles to South Bend this week. It is likely that the schematic advantage Notre Dame enjoys will result in positive total yards for the seventh consecutive week.

LSU survived a home scare against the Florida Gators. The Gators led most of the contest, but were sent packing with their second consecutive loss of the year. Hidden in the victory is the utter lunacy of Les Miles. There are times when one makes a foolish call and it ends up working, sparing the head man from the barrage of post game questions about his miserable decision making. Miles was the benefactor of this several times during the course of the game, but no more so than LSU's late in the game 4th down conversion - the second of the drive - setting up the game winning touchdown. Needing only a field goal to send the game in to overtime, and with momentum and the home crowd on his side, Miles made the Tom Osbournesque call to go balls out instead of playing it safe with a game tying 24 yard chip shot. Facing 4th and 1 from the six and with just over 2 minutes remaining, Miles rolled the dice, sending Jacob Hester plunging in to the line, where he gained enough yardage to bring out the chains. First and goal ... barely. 3 plays later, Hester scored and the win was ultimately secured. Because the Tigers made it no one is questioning this call. But, lets be clear about this ... just because your bone-headed plan worked, does not mean the plan was not bone-headed. I have full confidence that Miles will cost the Tigers a game in the very near future. There are some coaching mouse-terminds that all the talent in the world cannot overcome. Miles is that guy.

As for Ohio State, this week's victims are the Kent State Golden Flashes and Time Warner subscribers, as the Buckeyes return to the Big Ten Network. It's not real clear why Jim Delany hates the MAC so much, doing all he can to limit its exposure, but two things are for sure. One, considering the way this year has been going, with the likes of Hot Hot Hot taking it to Skunk-bear and the mighty lubricated condoms getting housed by a team who's mascot is a tree, Tressel will have the Buckeyes ready to go - even if it is against a clearly inferior team. The other, if the Buckeyes stop RB Eugene Jarvis, the Flashes might not gain a single yard. Go Bucks!
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
The Golden Flashes. As for gameday football traditions, one would expect a school like Kent State, rich in history, to be bountiful with school pride and traditions. The search proved otherwise. Even those nearest and dearest to the program concur:
  • "There's no tradition at Kent State," said Doug Martin, the school's 10 th football coach since Don James led the Golden Flashes to their last bowl game in 1972. Martin is the second coach in that span to last more than three fourth to win as many as six games in a season. "Ohio State, there's tradition," Martin said. "They know how to win.
  • "What our players hear are negative things about football here from fans because that?s what the tradition has been," Martin said.
  • "The lack of a football tradition at Kent State has led to weak student turnout at games, and recent success would lead one to believe this would change."
  • "Many students say if Kent State had a football tradition like Ohio State or Penn State, their attitudes would change about attending games."
  • "I don't attend often," said Brad Bugara, psychology and nursing major. "But if Ohio State was in Kent, I'd be there."
  • "Many said if the team was better they would attend. With the football program on the rise, the time is now for Kent State students to show their support."
  • "All home events are free to the students," Mahoney added. "That's something you can't get anywhere else. Students get the best seat in the house.
The football team held their fist game on October 30,1920, a 6-0 loss to Ashland College. Around this same time, the teams became known as the "Silver Foxes" because then-president John McGilvrey raised silver foxes on his farm. After McGilvrey's controversial firing in 1926, the new administration held a contest to choose a different team name and "Golden Flashes" was chosen.

Kent State's school colors are blue and gold - purely by accident. In the 1910 state charter, the school colors were orange and purple. However, a local laundry changed the colors. The basketball uniforms, orange and purple when they went into the hot water, came back gold and blue-black. Word has it that the team and student body liked the new colors so well they adopted them as the new school colors.

Dix stadium is where the Golden Flashes play their games. It is located the far east side of Kent State campus and seats 29,287 people. The stadium has never sold out a Kent State football game. The largest KSU football crowd ever at Dix Stadium was 27,363 on November 10, 1973 for a game versus Miami University. The stadium was, however, sold out in August 1980 for a scrimmage between the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills and nearly sold out for a November 28, 1998 high school playoff game. The Stadium consists of four separate grandstands on each side of the field, the west side is the largest, and the recently rebuilt east side (student seating) is the smallest. On either side of the east grandstands are spaces for party tents. Permanent lights were added in 1996. Artificial turf was installed in 1997 and replaced in 2005 with the latest version of FieldTurf. The current scoreboard with a 15x17-foot video display was added in 1998. Prior to the 2002 season, the east side stands, remnants of the original Memorial Stadium, were demolished. The current east side bleachers were constructed after the 2002 season and were completed in time for the 2003 season opener. The new configuration slightly altered the stadium's seating capacity reducing it from 30,520 to the current 29,287.

The Blue and Gold Wagon Wheel, now known simply as the Wagon Wheel, is awarded to the winner of the annual football game between the Kent State and The University of Akron. The trophy is, as the name implies, the wheel from a horse-drawn wagon that is painted blue and gold, the colors in which both teams play. The University of Akron and Kent State University, located just 10 miles apart, first played for the Wagon Wheel in 1946. The story goes that John R. Buchtel was searching for a site to start a new college in 1870near what is now KSUwhen his wagon became stuck in the mud. The horses pulled the wagon apart and one of the wheels ended up being buried. Buchtel would eventually settle on a site in Akron for Buchtel College, which would eventually become the University of Akron. In 1902, while digging for a pipeline in Kent, the wheel was discovered and eventually came into the possession of Kent State dean of men Dr. Raymond Manchester. It was he who suggested in 1945 that the wheel be used as a trophy for the winner of the Kent State-Akron football game. When the rivalry first started, Kent State dominated the series every year until 1954, when the rivalry was scrapped due to a lack of competition. It was reinstated in 1972 and has been an annual contest since. In 1992, Akron joined the Mid-American conference and the rivalry became a conference game.

Akron currently holds a 28-20-2 edge in the overall series and Kent State holds a 19-17-1 series lead in Wagon Wheel games.

On game days, the pre-game festivities start at 1:30 p.m. in Tailgate Alley. Free food, beer, live bands and a cornhole tournament are just a few items offered to students. Can you imagine for just one second how much free food would be necessary to provide this luxury on Ohio State's campus?
